This book contains the private collection of twentieth century bronze flower vases compiled by Ton and Mies Becker, both retired medical specialists and collectors of Asian art. With the introduction of Buddhism in Japan in the sixth century, bronze containers for flowers to be placed on the altar became important religious objects. In the fifteenth century the Buddhist monk Senno Ikenobô founded the art of flower arranging, which started what nowadays is known as ikebana, the traditional Japanese way of floral art. A few introductory essays provide some background information about 'bronzes in Japanese culture', 'the patination of flower bronzes' and 'the tomobako (storage box)'. The catalogue of the vases is arranged according to the bronze worker and presented in alphabetical order in the traditional Japanese way, i.e. the family name first, followed by the given name. All vases are shown together with their tomobako -if available- and with their signature or seal. Brief biographical data are included when available

"Evocative and often highly erotic works on paper by Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, and Pablo Picasso are presented along with new details about Scofield Thayer (1889-1982), the unusual and complicated man who collected them. Thayer was a wealthy publisher, poet, and aesthete who led an intense public life that included the editorship of the prominent literary journal The Dial and friendships with literary luminaries such as e. e. cummings. In the 1920s, Thayer went on an art-buying spree in London, Paris, Berlin, and Vienna, acquiring approximately 600 works of art. Among these are particularly provocative drawings and watercolors by Klimt, Schiele, and Picasso, at a time when these works were little known or appreciated. This book showcases 52 of the rarely seen works--which have now taken their place as modernist erotic masterpieces--and presents them within the context of the collector's remarkable life and tempestuous times." -- Publisher's description

"Pang Yuanji (1864-1949) was the collector from China with not only the largest number of high-quality antique paintings but also the most comprehensive and scholarly record of his collection. This is the first study that takes the innovative and unique approach to collection analysis by quantifying Pang's collection and comparing it to a selection of contemporaneous private collectors. In doing so, it shows how their tastes and interests were all shaped by the same Qing canon. More broadly, it explains that Pang did not merely absorb this canon, but then also purposefully and systematically used it and his collection to protect China's traditions into an uncertain future"--

Straight from the State Hermitage?s world-famous medieval art collection and the Arsenal, we present an amazing tale of knights and ladies, of courtly love and of chivalric tournaments. Fascination with the Middle Ages was widespread throughout nineteenth-century Europe and the tsars shared in it to the full. In 1885, Tsar Alexander III snapped up a celebrated art collection including countless medieval objets d?art just as it was to be auctioned off in Paris. The entire French art world was in shock! Nicholas I, de ?chivalrous tsar?, created an Arsenal filled with unique suits of armour and antique weapons. Now, for the first time, top items from these two collections are coming to Western Europe. Star works are Hugo van der Goes?s phenomenal triptych The Adoration of the Magi and a true Garden of Earthly Delights by a follower of Hieronymus Bosch. And a host of outstanding ecclesiastical treasures, including renowned Limoges enamels. Among the real eye-openers is a magnificent, 500-year-old manuscript of the Roman de la Rose, the much-discussed, erotically charged bestseller of the Middle Ages. And, for the knight-errant or romantic medieval damsel in you: a spectacular jousting display featuring superb suits of armour ? including one worn by Holy Roman Emperor Charles V!00Exhibition: Hermitage, Amsterdam, The Netherlands (26.05.-08.11.2020)

L'exposition Country Life. "This book examines the renowned portrait collection assembled by C. P. E. Bach, J. S. Bach's second son. Containing nearly 400 objects from oil paintings to engraved prints, Bach's collection is a remarkable artifact of eighteenth-century music culture. Taken together, the portraits provide a vivid panorama of music history and culture as well as the sensibility and humor of the time in which they were made. Most importantly, Richards argues, the collection sought to establish music as an object of aesthetic, philosophical, and historiographical value-as an art with a history. Richards makes the collection come alive, showing readers what it was like to tour the portrait gallery and to experience music in a room whose walls were packed with art. She uses the collection to analyzes the "portraitive" aspect of Bach's music, engaging with the influential theories of Swiss physiognomist Johann Caspar Lavater. She also explores the collection as a way to cultivating and preserving friendship, connecting this to the culture of remembrance that resonates in Bach's domestic music. Richards shows how the new music historiography of the late eighteenth century, rich in anecdote, memoir, and verbal portrait, was deeply indebted to portrait collecting and its negotiation between presence and detachment, fact and feeling"--

"The printing technology known as lithography was born around 1800, just as Texas was entering a period of turmoil and growth. Until it was replaced by photography in the latter years of the 19th century it was the primary visual medium for representing scenes of the Lone Star State. In this book, Ron Tyler has compiled the most complete collection of lithographs depicting our state, to produce a kind of visual history of 19th-century Texas. Importantly, many of the images in this book were not produced in Texas, or by Texans; he includes many images produced by visitors that ended up in travel books-books that helped create the mythic reputation of the Lone Star State. Tyler is indebted to one 19th-century immigrant in particular: "Swen Jaensson, known as Swante Palm (1815-1899), a twenty-four-year-old Swede who immigrated to Texas in 1844, gathered a large collection of prints and travel books in his Austin home, and, in 1897, donated most of his 12,000 volumes to the University of Texas.... Gathered in his library, and in this study for the first time, is perhaps the most complete visual record of nineteenth-century Texas, the record of a nineteenth-century myth on the make." Tyler's book works through the material in chronological order, from the colonial era through the Texas revolution, Republic, Civil War, the growth of cattle ranching and the arrival of railroads. Since many of the lithographs were created or commissioned by outsiders, there is a tendency for more material to appear when Texas was in the news, or represented at World's Fairs and other expositions even when they did not take place in Texas. Texans interested in promoting their state or city were also responsible for many of these images, which turned a blind eye to atrocities in favor of "bold, positive, and often exaggerated interpretations-visions, really-of the reality that Texans hoped for.""--
