    Victims of the Book uncovers a long-neglected but once widespread subgenre: the fin-de-siècle novel of formation in France. Novels about and geared toward adolescent male readers were imbued with a deep worry over young Frenchmen’s masculinity, as evidenced by titles like Crise de jeunesse (Youth in Crisis, 1897), La Crise virile (Crisis of Virility, 1898), La Vie stérile (A Sterile Life, 1892), and La Mortelle Impuissance (Deadly Impotence, 1903). In this book, François Proulx examines a wide panorama of these novels, many of which have rarely been studied, as well as polemical essays, pedagogical articles, and medical treatises on the perceived threats posed by young Frenchmen’s reading habits. Against this cultural backdrop, he illuminates all that was at stake in representations of the male reader by prominent novelists of the period, including Jules Vallès, Paul Bourget, Maurice Barrès, André Gide, and Marcel Proust. In the final decades of the nineteenth century, social commentators insistently characterized excessive reading as an emasculating illness that afflicted French youth. Fin-de-siècle writers responded to this pathologization of reading with a profusion of novels addressed to young male readers, paradoxically proposing their own novels as potential cures. In the early twentieth century, this corpus was critically revisited by a new generation of writers. Victims of the Book shows how Gide and Proust in particular reworked the fin-de-siècle paradox to subvert cultural norms about literature and masculinity, proposing instead a queer pact between writer and reader

    Die literarische Darstellung der Selbstverwirklichung oder des Versagens eines literarischen Helden wird seit dem Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts mit der Empörung gegen die Gesellschaft verbunden. Der Erfahrungshorizont dieser Helden ist aber eingeschränkt, weil der wissenschaftliche und sozialgeschichtliche Fortschritt ihrem Erkenntnisinteresse entrückt und vorwiegend negativ beurteilt wird. Die kritische Gestaltung des Subjektivismus ist ein bedeutsames Merkmal der französischen Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts. Aus dieser Perspektive werden die folgenden Werke erläutert: P.     Im I. Band der Tagebücher von Albert Camus findet sich das ideelle Konzept seiner Schreibweise: die Konfrontation des menschlichen Bewusstseins mit der Natur oder mit der Geschichte, die keine Antwort auf die Frage nach dem Warum oder Wozu geben. Die Erfahrung des Schweigens der Welt führt zu einer individuellen vitalistischen Antwort, der "Revolte". Aus der Perspektive des Künstlers oder Schriftstellers ist die "Revolte" Ausdruck seiner Verachtung des normalen oder so genannten 'bürgerlichen' Lebens. Nach dem Ende des 2. Weltkrieges fassten französische Intellektuelle die Konfrontation zwischen den USA und der UdSSR als eine Fortsetzung und Variation der ideologischen Konfrontation zwischen Faschismus und Stalinismus auf. Unter dem Eindruck dieser Diskussion hat Camus die "Revolte" als individuelles Aufbegehren gegen jede Form des politischen Zwangs beschrieben. Peer Reviewed

    « Le voyage de Barrès, après ceux de Chateaubriand, de Lamartine, de Gautier, de Gérard de Nerval, aura été le dernier des voyages romantiques d’Orient, des voyages vers l’Orient romantique. Là encore 1914 marque la grande coupure. Cet Orient n’existe plus », écrivait Albert Thibaudet, pour qui la Grande Guerre mettait fin à une lignée de voyageurs. Cet ouvrage interroge l’influence de la guerre sur la vision et l’écriture de l’Orient chez des savants et des écrivains, notamment André Gide et Pierre Loti. À partir d’Une enquête aux pays du Levant, livre de Barrès publié en 1923, mais issu d’un voyage de 1914, il identifie plus largement les mutations du genre du récit de voyage entre le long XIXe siècle, marqué par le romantisme, motivé par la quête spirituelle, et les années d’entre-deux-guerres où se développe le genre du grand reportage, marqué par un intérêt plus politique lié à la présence coloniale française en Syrie et au Liban.

    « Le voyage de Barrès, après ceux de Chateaubriand, de Lamartine, de Gautier, de Gérard de Nerval, aura été le dernier des voyages romantiques d'Orient, des voyages vers l'Orient romantique. Là encore 1914 marque la grande coupure. Cet Orient n'existe plus », écrivait Albert Thibaudet, pour qui la Grande Guerre mettait fin à une lignée de voyageurs. Cet ouvrage interroge l'influence de la guerre sur la vision et l'écriture de l'Orient chez des savants et des écrivains, notamment André Gide et Pierre Loti. À partir d'Une enquête aux pays du Levant, livre de Barrès publié en 1923, mais issu d'un voyage de 1914, il identifie plus largement les mutations du genre du récit de voyage entre le long XIXe siècle, marqué par le romantisme, motivé par la quête spirituelle, et les années d'entre-deux-guerres où se développe le genre du grand reportage, marqué par un intérêt plus politique lié à la présence coloniale française en Syrie et au Liban.

    Victims of the Book uncovers a long-neglected but once widespread subgenre: the fin-de-siècle novel of formation in France. Novels about and geared toward adolescent male readers were imbued with a deep worry over young Frenchmen’s masculinity, as evidenced by titles like Crise de jeunesse (Youth in Crisis, 1897), La Crise virile (Crisis of Virility, 1898), La Vie stérile (A Sterile Life, 1892), and La Mortelle Impuissance (Deadly Impotence, 1903). In this book, François Proulx examines a wide panorama of these novels, many of which have rarely been studied, as well as polemical essays, pedagogical articles, and medical treatises on the perceived threats posed by young Frenchmen’s reading habits. Against this cultural backdrop, he illuminates all that was at stake in representations of the male reader by prominent novelists of the period, including Jules Vallès, Paul Bourget, Maurice Barrès, André Gide, and Marcel Proust. In the final decades of the nineteenth century, social commentators insistently characterized excessive reading as an emasculating illness that afflicted French youth. Fin-de-siècle writers responded to this pathologization of reading with a profusion of novels addressed to young male readers, paradoxically proposing their own novels as potential cures. In the early twentieth century, this corpus was critically revisited by a new generation of writers. Victims of the Book shows how Gide and Proust in particular reworked the fin-de-siècle paradox to subvert cultural norms about literature and masculinity, proposing instead a queer pact between writer and reader
