    Abstract: "The issue of social exclusion, currently of particular concern to policy makers in Brussels, is a manifestation of new aspects of social inequality that are supposed to go along with persistent high unemployment rates and increasing poverty affection. The concept provides a multidimensional and dynamic perspective of the resultant weakened possibilities to participate in social life. The growing acceptance of the term, however, has not been accompanied by a consensus regarding who exactly belong under its rubric nor how this could be verified empirically. This contribution makes an effort to cut down the broad meaning of social exclusion in order to propose dimensions and indicators for measurement and monitoring purposes. With the help of actual data from the Euromodule, a representative survey instrument for European welfare comparison, the interplay between standard of living and social participation is analysed in Hungary, Spain, and Germany.     Abstract: "This paper identifies six main theories of the determinants of social trust, and tests them against survey data from seven nations, 1999-2001. Three of the six theories of trust fare rather poorly and three do better. First and foremost, social trust tends to be high among citizens who believe that there are few severe social conflicts and where the sense of public safety is high. Second, informal social networks are associated with trust. And third, those who are successful in life trust more, or are more inclined by their personal experience to do so. Individual theories seem to work best in societies with higher levels of trust, and societal ones in societies with lower levels of trust. This may have something to do with the fact that our two low trust societies happen to have experienced revolutionary change in the very recent past, so that societal events have overwhelmed individual circumstances."     Abstract: "Die vorliegende Studie befaßt sich mit der Situation der europäischen Autoindustrie seit der Krise Anfang der 90er Jahre. Auf eine kurze Beschreibung branchenspezifischer struktureller Probleme sowie der Reaktionen seitens der Autohersteller folgt eine detaillierte Analyse der gewerkschaftlichen Reaktionen. Diskutiert werden zwei Schritte in diesem Reaktionsprozeß. Der erste Schritt bestand aus traditionellen Sozialplänen und Maßnahmen zum vorzeitigen Ruhestand, die schon vorher ein Kernelement gewerkschaftlicher Strategien ausgemacht hatten. Der zweite Schritt beinhaltet eine breitere Strategie, in welcher Arbeitszeitverkürzung, Arbeitszeitflexibilität und Lohnkonzessionen gegen Arbeitsplatz- und Investitionsgarantien eingetauscht werden sollen. Eine gründliche Untersuchung derartiger Abkommen in fünf europäischen Autoindustrien (Deutschland, Frankreich, Spanien, Großbritannien und Belgien) sowie zwei detaillierte Fallstudien der durch diese Abkommen ausgelösten kompetitiven Dyna

    Abstract: 'Human rights of immigrants have not been directly related to rights recognised to members of traditional minorities in some constitutional or international frameworks. However, immigration processes entail new demands of integrating linguistic rights within the public space and institutions. The Spanish example can open new challenges to multiculturalist approaches, since it brings together traditional and new linguistic diversity in a very significant level. In particular, new challenges arise in sub-state autonomous entities, as is the case in the Basque country, where linguistic diversity has been a traditional element of the society. These new multilingual realities challenge the traditional view of diversity and force us to rethink the substantial contents of some fundamental rights in order to accommodate democratically linguistic diversity in post-modern societies.'     Abstract: Der Beitrag basiert auf den Ergebnissen einer aktuellen qualitativen Befragung im Prozess der Wanderungsplanung. Dieser Zugang ist, so die Verfasser, insofern neu, als dass die meisten Migrationsstudien Wanderungsmotive retrospektiv erfragen, wodurch sich Deutungsverschiebungen ergeben können, so beispielsweise bei der Überlagerung von Migrationsgründen durch Bleibegründe. Aus diesem Grund ist die Befragung in einem zeitlich nahen Abstand vor dem eigentlichen Migrationsereignis durchgeführt worden. Der Zugang zu der Untersuchungsgruppe erfolgt im Rahmen von Sprach- und Vorbereitungskursen sowie des Informationsveranstaltungen des Europaservice der Bundesagentur für Arbeit. Empirisch zeigt sich, so die Autoren, dass Arbeitslosigkeit in Deutschland bzw. die Suche nach Arbeit im Zielland ein wichtiges Motiv von Wanderungen ist.     Abstract: "Ist die biographische Methode zur wissenschaftlichen Durchdringung der Vergangenheit ein gangbarer Weg? Spätestens seit Bourdieus 'biographischer Illusion' drehten sich methodische Debatten der Geschichtswissenschaft um diese Frage. Doch warum wird gerade der Biographie immer wieder 'Unwissenschaftlichkeit' vorgeworfen? Der Beitrag greift auf Hayden Whites Überlegungen zur figurativen Imagination des historischen Diskurses zurück. White stellte die These auf, dass die Geschichtsschreibung als prosaischer Diskurs eine poetische Substruktur enthält, die die Aussage des Prosatextes unterstreicht und präfiguriert. Nimmt man somit eine Verschmelzung von Poesie und Prosa an, ergibt sich für den historischen Diskurs die Konsequenz, dass die Aussagen der Geschichtswissenschaft nicht mehr nur auf die Gegenwartsinteressen der Rezipienten hin kritisch hinterfragt werden müssen, sondern dass bereits poetologisch aufdeckbare, sprachliche Substrukturen, die Historiker bei der Darstellung der Fa

    Abstract: The migration of older people in search for improved quality of life has become an important form of human mobility, and popular retirement destinations are often highly multilingual settings. This article explores language use and social inclusion in international retirement migration through a case study of Scandinavian retirees in the Alicante province in Spain. It examines the linguistic landscape they meet, their language use and their inclusion in their new home country. Interviews with retired migrants and key local individuals show that many migrants try to learn the host country language, but that these attempts are often not very successful. As a result, they frequently use either their native language or English for everyday communication. This article elaborates on three theoretical and political notions of inclusion - assimilation, multiculturalism and civic integration - and discusses how retired migrants’ language use can be interpreted in the light of these notions

    Abstract: "There can be no doubt that physical violence was a constant feature of Spanish and Portuguese colonialism in Latin America. Far from being uniform, however, the form and extent of colonial violence varied considerably between different regions and time periods. The paper discusses these differences and relates them, among other things, to the character of the native societies as well as to the different systems of economic exploitation the colonizers used. In another section, the patterns of violent protest against colonial rule will be discussed where periods of relative 'peacefulness' alternated with times of massive violence. Beyond this, it is argued that alliances between Europeans and indigenous groups played an important role in the establishment and preservation of colonial rule. Emphasizing native complicity in the colonial system by no means absolves Europeans from their responsibility for colonialism in Latin America as such or, more specifically, for the bulk of coloni

Através da análise de documentos do arquivo da editora Douglas Pompeu reflete sobre a posição marginal da produção literária brasileira na circulação literária internacional, assim como sobre o seus esforços de divulgação para além das fronteiras nacionais. O estudo pode ser resumido como uma pesquisa de cruzamento entre dois espaços literários com valências distintas, mas em contato e movimento constante, no qual editores, agentes, redatores, tradutores e o leitor tomam o protagonismo da instância autor na produção do livro e na legibilidade, traduzibilidade e vendabilidade do produto literário

    Abstract: "Social insurance systems are known to reproduce gender inequalities in the labour market because they are usually based on 'standard employment contracts' (full-time, permanent, dependent) and often take into account the household constellation through means-testing. Gender inequalities in the labour market consist of higher part-time employment rates, more frequent movements between employment and inactivity and on average lower wages among women. These inequalities are mainly due to the unequal distribution of household and family tasks between men and women. This paper will use the data of the European Household Panel to compare access to and level of unemployment benefits between men and women. Differences in access to benefits are usually brought about by the following design features of unemployment benefits: hours and earnings thresholds, minimum contribution requirements, and means-testing, whereas the benefit levels in many systems are calculated as a share of former earn
