    Die komparatistische Untersuchung verortet zentrale Texte von Heine und Byron poetologisch und epochengeschichtlich zwischen Romantik und Realismus vor dem Hintergrund einer europäischen Literatur- und Kulturgeschichte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Heines Byron-Rezeption wird dabei unter Rückgriff auf Pierre Bourdieus Theorie des literarischen Feldes neu evaluiert, wobei statt des bisherigen Paradigmas des Weltschmerzes erstmals der Fokus auf eine Poetik eingreifender Kunst gerichtet wird, die Heine und Byron in ihren Texten zwischen 1815 und 1830 entwickeln. Mit diesem transgressiven Konzept performativen Schreibens, das sich in skandalisierenden Schriften wie „Die Bäder von Lukka“ und „The Vision of Judgment“ zeigt, werden frühromantische Positionen zum Verhältnis von Kunst und Leben aufgegriffen, umcodiert und transformiert. In Detailstudien von Byrons „Childe Harold IV“ und Heines „Die Reise von München nach Genua“ wird gezeigt, wie sich eine Politisierung der Poetik zu einer eingreifenden Kunst in der textuellen Auseinandersetzung der beiden Autoren mit dem zeitgenössischen Italien und seiner diskursiven Konstruktion vollzieht und damit eine neue Form postromantischen Schreibens realisiert wird. „Böhm hantiert selbstbewusst mit den unterschiedlichsten theoretischen Zugängen und deckt zahlreiche intertextuelle Bezüge auf, die Heine und Byron in ihrer Verflechtung untereinander beleuchten, sie zugleich mit vielen weiteren Referenztexten in Verbindung bringen. Ihre innovativen Thesen verfolgt sie bis in die Mikrostrukturen der Texte, wenn sie sich zum Beispiel auf strukturalistische Weise der Trope des Vergleichs annimmt.     A long line of traditional, often conservative, criticism and cultural commentary deplored Byron as a slipshod poet. This pithy yet aptly poetic book, written by one of the world's foremost Romantic scholars, argues that assessment is badly mistaken. Byron's great subject is what he called 'Cant': the habit of abusing the world through misusing language. Setting up his poetry as a laboratory to investigate failures of writing, reading, and thinking, Byron delivered sharp critical judgment on the costs exacted by a careless approach to his Mother Tongue. Perspicuous readings of Byron alongside some of his Romantic contemporaries - Burns, Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Shelley - reveal Byron's startling reconfiguration of poetry as a 'broken mirror' and shattered lamp. The paradoxical result was to argue that his age's contradictions, and his own, offered both ethical opportunities and a promise of poetic - broadly cultural - emancipation. This book represents a major contribution to ideas about Romanticism.

    What literary and social functions do self-annotations (i.e. footnotes and endnotes that authors appended to their own works) serve? Focussing on Alexander Pope’s Dunciad s and a wide selection of Lord Byron’s poems, Lahrsow shows that literary self-annotations rarely just explain a text. Rather, they multiply meanings and pit different voices against each other. Self-annotations serve to ambiguate the author’s self-presentation as well as the genre, tone, and overall interpretation of a text. The study also examines how notes were employed for ‘social networking’ and how authors used self-annotations to address, and differentiate between, various groups of readerships. Additionally, the volume sheds light on the wider literary and cultural context of self-annotations: How common were they during the long eighteenth century? What conventions governed them? And were they even read? The study hence combines literary analysis with insights into book history and the history of reading

    "In the late Romantic age, demands for political change converged with thinking about the end of the world. This book examines writings by Lord Byron, Mary Shelley and their circle that imagined the end, from poems by Byron that pictured fallen empires, sinking islands, and dying stars to the making and unmaking of populations in Frankenstein and The Last Man. These works intersected with and enclosed reflections upon brewing political changes. By imagining political dynasties, slavery, parliament, and English law reaching an end, writers challenged liberal visions of the political future that viewed the basis of governance as permanently settled. The prospect of volcanic eruptions and biblical deluges, meanwhile, pointed towards new political worlds, forged in the ruins of this one. These visions of coming to an end acquire added resonance in our own time, as political and planetary end-times converge once again. John Owen Havard is Assistant Professor of English at Binghamton University. He is the author of Disaffected Parties: Political Estrangement and the Making of English Literature, 1760-1830 (2019).
