    Das Werk bietet eine Neuevaluierung des Kommentars Avicennas zur aristotelischen Poetik und eröffnet Gräzisten, Arabisten und Philosophen gleichermaßen Interpretationsspielräume durch den Fokus auf die Frage, wie Avicenna den Kommentar in seinem philosophischen Wissenschaftssystem selbst verortete. Den Ausgangspunkt nimmt die Arbeit, in aristotelischer Terminologie, bei dem, was ‚für uns früher‘ ist und schließt mit dem, was ‚der Sache nach früher‘ ist. Im ersten Schritt werden der Kommentar selbst und die Quelle, die Avicenna zur Verfügung stand, mit deutschen Übersetzungen synoptisch gegenübergestellt. Anschließend wird Avicennas Schrift mit Forschungsergebnissen zur Poetik konfrontiert und abschließend philosophisch kontextualisiert. The work offers a re-evaluation of Avicenna's commentary on Aristotle's Poetics and opens up interpretive scope for Classicists, Arabists, and philosophers alike by focusing on the question of how Avicenna situated the commentary within his own philosophical system. The work takes its starting point, in Aristotelian terminology, with what is 'prior in relation to us' and concludes with what is 'prior by nature'. In the first step, the commentary itself and the source Avicenna had at his disposal are translated into German and arranged synoptically. The work is then confronted with research results on the Poetics and finally philosophically contextualized.

    In this volume, Gabriella Elgrably-Berzin offers an analysis of the fourteenth-century Hebrew translation of a major eleventh-century philosophical text: Avicenna's Kitab al-Najat (The Book of Salvation), focusing on the psychology treatise on physics. The translator of this work was Todros Todrosi, the main Hebrew translator of Avicenna's philosophical writings. This study includes a critical edition of Todrosi's translation, based on two manuscripts as compared to the Arabic edition (Cairo, 1938), and an appendix featuring the section on metaphysics. By analyzing Todrosi's language and terminology and making his Hebrew translation available for the first time, Berzin's study will help enable scholars to trace the borrowings from Todrosi's translations in Jewish sources, shedding light on the transmission and impact of Avicenna's philosophy This study includes a critical edition of Ṭodrosi's Hebrew translation of "On the Soul", the sixth treatise in section two, Physics, of The Salvation (Haẓalat ha-Nefesh). The critical edition is based on a manuscript of The Salvation housed in the British Library, London, and to a lesser extent, on another manuscript housed in the Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris, both compared to the Arabic version of the text, reissued in Cairo in 1938. -- from the preface, p. In this volume, Gabriella Elgrably-Berzin offers an analysis of the fourteenth-century Hebrew translation of a major eleventh-century philosophical text: Avicenna’s Kitāb al-Najāt (The Book of Salvation), focusing on the psychology treatise on physics. The translator of this work was Ṭodros Ṭodrosi, the main Hebrew translator of Avicenna’s philosophical writings. This study includes a critical edition of Ṭodrosi’s translation, based on two manuscripts as compared to the Arabic edition (Cairo, 1938), and an appendix featuring the section on metaphysics. By analyzing Ṭodrosi’s language and terminology and making his Hebrew translation available for the first time, Berzin’s study will help enable scholars to trace the borrowings from Todrosi’s translations in Jewish sources, shedding light on the transmission and impact of Avicenna’s philosophy

    Islamic allegory is the product of a cohesive literary tradition to which few contributed as significantly as Ibn Sina (Avicenna), the eleventh-century Muslim philosopher. Peter Heath here offers a detailed examination of Avicenna's contribution, paying special attention to Avicenna's psychology and poetics and to the ways in which they influenced strains of theological, mystical, and literary thought in subsequent Islamic - and Western - intellectual and religious history. Heath begins by showing how Avicenna's writings fit into the context and general history of Islamic allegory and explores the interaction among allegory, allegoresis, and philosophy in Avicenna's thought. He then provides a brief introduction to Avicenna as an historical figure. From there, he examines the ways in which Avicenna's cosmological, psychological, and epistemological theories find parallel, if diverse, expression in the disparate formats of philosophical and allegorical narration. Included in this book is an illustration of Avicenna's allegorical practice. This takes the form of a translation of the Mi'raj Nama (The Book of the Prophet Muhammad's Ascent to Heaven), a short treatise in Persian generally attributed to Avicenna. The text concludes with an investigation of the literary dimension Avicenna's allegorical theory and practice by examining his use of description metaphor. Allegory and Philosophy in Avicenna is an original and important work that breaks new ground by applying the techniques of modern literary criticism to the study of Medieval Islamic philosophy. It will be of interest to scholars and students of medieval Islamic and Western literature and philosophy.

In this volume, Gabriella Elgrably-Berzin offers an analysis of the fourteenth-century Hebrew translation of a major eleventh-century philosophical text: Avicenna’s Kitāb al-Najāt (The Book of Salvation), focusing on the psychology treatise on physics. The translator of this work was Ṭodros Ṭodrosi, the main Hebrew translator of Avicenna’s philosophical writings. This study includes a critical edition of Ṭodrosi’s translation, based on two manuscripts as compared to the Arabic edition (Cairo, 1938), and an appendix featuring the section on metaphysics. By analyzing Ṭodrosi’s language and terminology and making his Hebrew translation available for the first time, Berzin’s study will help enable scholars to trace the borrowings from Todrosi’s translations in Jewish sources, shedding light on the transmission and impact of Avicenna’s philosophy
