    The European Research Council project ("Locus Ludi". The Cultural Fabric of Play and Games in Classical Antiquity (ERC AdG # 741520) investigates how play and games provide a privileged access to past societal norms, values, identities, and collective imaginary. People play all over the world and throughout history, but they do not play the same games, nor do they attribute the same meaning and function to play. This pluridisciplinary volume investigates how such an important part of ancient cultures can be methodologically reconstructed. A first series of chapters based on Greek and Roman texts and vocabulary propose an emic definition of play and games. Beyond the common association of child and play (in Greek, paidia, ʿplayʾ, pais, ʿchildʾ, and paideia, ʿeducationʾ, share the same root, in Latin ludus means ʿplayʾ, ʿschoolʾ, and ʿrethorical gamesʾ), ancient views are more complex and nuanced. The boundaries between sport, dance, rites and play are fluid and differ from our modern view. Case studies show how playful practices can be defined in material culture and iconographic representations. The second part of the volume focuses on Greek and Roman ludic heritage in ancient literature with particular attention to the cultural and discursive codes according to literary genre (oniromancy, proverbs, children's rhymes, lexicography ...). Close studies assess the transmission of a predominantly oral heritage in collections, lexicons and commentaries ranging from the Roman imperial period to Byzantine times (proverbs, riddles, and children's lore). New insights are provided on crucial issues about cultural continuities and discontinuities, as well as the definition of so-called "traditional" games

En dehors du paradigme évolutionniste élaboré par Darwin et repris par la biologie post-darwinienne, sans les données de la génétique et le dispositif disciplinaire de la primatologie, les textes anciens ont construit d'autres représentations culturelles du singe sans le concevoir comme un cousin ou un parent proche avec lequel nous aurions un ancêtre commun.00À travers une analyse philologique rigoureuse des textes grecs et romains, des traités savants de la zoologie et la médecine grecques aux élaborations symboliquement plus complexes du théâtre comique ou de la fable, cette étude propose une analyse approfondie de la représentation discursive des primates non humains dans la culture antique depuis Sémonide d?Amorgos à Élien de Préneste.0Des questions essentielles pour la compréhension des cultures anciennes - de l'anthropomorphisme des animaux au débat sur l'intelligence des vivants en passant par les élaborations autour de l'importante catégorie de la mimésis - seront abordées selon une approche d?anthropologie historique. Les relations interspécifiques, la représentation de l'altérité géographique et culturelle, les jugements de valeur exprimés sur les groupes minoritaires et marginaux de la société ancienne seront traités à travers la perspective transversale donnée par l'analyse d'une partie spécifique de l'encyclopédie culturelle ancienne, à savoir le singe des Anciens.

    The aim of this book is to explore the definition(s) of 'theatre' and 'metatheatre' that scholars use when studying the ancient Greek world. Although in modern languages their meaning is mostly straightforward, both concepts become problematical when applied to ancient reality. In fact, 'theatre' as well as 'metatheatre' are used in many different, sometimes even contradictory, ways by modern scholars.Through a series of papers examining questions related to ancient Greek theatre and dramatic performances of various genres the use of those two terms is problematized and put into question.Must ancient Greek theatre be reduced to what was performed in proper theatre-buildings? And is everything was performed within such buildings to be considered as 'theatre'? How does the definition of what is considered as theatre evolve from one period to the other?As for 'metatheatre', the discussion revolves around the interaction between reality and fiction in dramatic pieces of all genres. The various definitions of 'metatheatre' are also explored and explicited by the papers gathered in this volume, as well as the question of the distinction between paratheatre (understood as paratragedy/comedy) and metatheatre.Readers will be encouraged by the diversity of approaches presented in this book to re-think their own understanding and use of 'theatre' and 'metatheatre' when examining ancient Greek reality.

Although in modern languages their meaning is mostly straightforward, both concepts become problematical when applied to ancient reality. In fact, ‘theatre’ as well as ‘metatheatre’ are used in many different, sometimes even contradictory, ways by modern scholars.Through a series of papers examining questions related to ancient Greek theatre and dramatic performances of various genres the use of those two terms is problematized and put into question.Must ancient Greek theatre be reduced to what was performed in proper theatre-buildings? And is everything was performed within such buildings to be considered as ‘theatre’? How does the definition of what is considered as theatre evolve from one period to the other?As for ‘metatheatre’, the discussion revolves around the interaction between reality and fiction in dramatic pieces of all genres. The various definitions of ‘metatheatre’ are also explored and explicited by the papers gathered in this volume, as well as the question of the distinction between paratheatre (understood as paratragedy/comedy) and metatheatre.Readers will be encouraged by the diversity of approaches presented in this book to re-think their own understanding and use of ‘theatre’ and ‘metatheatre’ when examining ancient Greek reality
