    In the 1970s, with the seemingly adventitions historical conjunction of Western feminism and the Chinese Cultural Revolution, one saw a spate of writings on the 'Chinese woman'. There were numerous academic books, popular accounts and travelogues. This interest cannot be explained simply by the opportunity that the 'opening' of China provided, though that is not entirely irrelevant. The author believes it has some other function in the consciousness of Western feminists seeking a new self-identity and articulating a new political programme. She examines some of the texts of this era: one text in particular "About Chinese women" by Julia Kristeva. (DÜI-Sen)
