    Landscape has become an important theme for David Hockney, especially since he returned to his homeland, the Yorkshire Wolds, in the 1990s. The landscapes in this catalgoue show a series of in-depth observations of the changing seasons and the way in which light, space and nature are constantly in motion. They are reminiscent of the landscapes of Vincent van Gogh, including his monumental Wheatfield with Crows and The Harvest. This book pays particular attention to these beautiful landscapes alongside Van Gogh's depiction of nature, with a special focus on technique, perspective and colour, and the way Van Gogh and Hockney use these "formal" elements to create their particular view on the world surrounding them.     Van Gogh and the Olive Groves' reunites for the first time the important series of paintings that Vincent van Gogh (1853-90) dedicated to the motif of olive trees during his stay at the asylum of Saint-Remy-de-Provence. The book contextualizes this work within Van Gogh's artistic production and explores its deeply personal, often religious resonance. It also features in-depth findings on the artist's technique, materials, and palette resulting from a three-year cross-disciplinary conservation science research project that rigorously examined all 15 paintings. Of particular interest are new discoveries concerning Van Gogh's use of unstable pigments, his application of paint en plein air versus in the studio, and the chronology of the series. Produced between June and December 1889, this bold and highly experimental series employs the motif as a constant in the artist's passionate investigation of the expressive powers of color, line, and subject. Painting the olive trees at different times of day and in different seasons was a quest to unlock their quintessential features, which to him represented the spirit of Provence.

    There is something intrinsically fresh, immediate and approachable about van Gogh's 'sous-bois' paintings, which are some of his most famous and finest works, and which beautifully capture the subtle and transient effects of light on foliage. 'Van Gogh: Into the Undergrowth' examines the way in which van Gogh was part of the wider 'sous-bois' tradition in nineteenth-century French painting, and explores how he used painting as a metaphor for the dynamism, vitality, and ever-changing face of nature, as presented under the forest canopy.In addition to color plates of twenty-five artworks by van Gogh and other leading landscape painters such as Daubigny, Monet, and Gauguin, this volume presents extensive new research on van Gogh, nature, and 'sous-bois'. There is a lead essay on van Gogh and nature by independent scholar Cornelia Homburg; Jenny Reynaerts looks at the 'sous-bois' genre in the nineteenth century; whilst Simon Kelly examines van Gogh's relationship with the Barbizon and Impressionist schools. Laura Prins writes specifically on Cincinnati Art Museum's own late van Gogh painting, 'Undergrowth with Two Figures', which has recently been restored.     "Over the course of his life, Van Gogh lived in thirty-seven different homes. In 1888 the artist moved into the only place he considered his own: his beloved "Yellow House" in Arles, France. His second-floor bedroom became a sanctuary, and it inspired him to record it in paint. Van Gogh so prized The Bedroom, which he deemed one of his best canvases, that he created two similar but distinct versions of it almost a year later, after being forced to leave his Yellow House following a nervous breakdown.
