World literature and translation, the world and the literary field as well as migration, translingual writing and hybridity are the topics of the present contributions to Slavic literatures of the present. The book combines analyzes of texts that have been written in Slavic, but also in non-Slavic languages or in several languages at the same time. Thus, works created in Russian, Bosnian-Croatian-Serbian, Polish, Czech, German, Tatar, English and French are associated with each other. The texts refer to global literary traditions, events and ways of life. However, they also respond to different local cultural and historical developments and social structures. On the one hand, the volume offers access to concepts of world literature and enriches the current debate on case studies from the Eastern European and Slavic contexts. On the other hand, he extends the Slavic discussion by dealing with theories and methods of world literature and the possibilities of their application to Slavic texts.

This book is the beginning of a conversation across Social Semiotics, Translanguaging, Complexity Theory and Radical Sociolinguistics. In its explorations of meaning, multimodality, communication and emerging language practices, the book includes theoretical and empirical chapters that move toward an understanding of communication in its dynamic complexity, and its social semiotic and situated character. It relocates current debates in linguistics and in multimodality, as well as conceptions of centers/margins, by re-conceptualizing communicative practice through investigation of indigenous/oral communities, street art performances, migration contexts, recycling artefacts and signage repurposing. The book takes an innovative approach to both the form and content of its scholarly writing, and will be of interest to all those involved in interdisciplinary thinking, researching and writing

This book analyses the language practices of young adults in Mongolia and Bangladesh in online and offline environments. Focusing on the diverse linguistic and cultural resources these young people draw on in their interactions, the authors draw attention to the creative and innovative nature of their transglossic practices. Situated on the Asian periphery, these young adults roam widely in their use of popular culture, media voices and linguistic resources. This innovative and topical book will appeal to students and scholars of sociolinguistics, applied linguistics, cultural studies and linguistic anthropology.

This book explores the experiences of Indigenous children and young adults around the world as they navigate the formal education system and wider society. Profiling a range of different communities and sociolinguistic contexts, this book examines the language ecologies of their local communities, schools and wider society and the approaches taken by these communities to maintain children’s home languages. The authors examine such complex themes as curriculum, translanguaging, contact languages and language use as cultural practice. In doing so, this edited collection acts as a first step towards developing solutions which address the complexity of the issues facing these children and young people. It will appeal to students and scholars of sociolinguistics, applied linguistics and community development, as well as language professionals including teachers, curriculum developers, language planners and educators. Gillian Wigglesworth is Redmond Barry Distinguished Professor at the University of Melbourne, Australia, and Chief Investigator for the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language. She has worked extensively with Indigenous children growing up in remote communities in Australia, largely in the Northern Territory.  Jane Simpson is Professor of Indigenous Linguistics at the Australian National University, Canberra, Australia, and Deputy Director of the Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence for the Dynamics of Language. Her research focuses on the structure and use of several Australian Aboriginal languages (Warumungu, Kaurna and Warlpiri), as well as English. Jill Vaughan is a postdoctoral fellow at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway. Her work in sociolinguistics and linguistic anthropology is concerned with multilingualism, contact and variation in Indigenous languages of northern Australia, and language practices in the context of the Irish diaspora.  - Chapter 1. This volume considers the linguistic complexities associated with Shakespeare’s presence in South Africa from 1801 to early twentieth-first century televisual updatings of the texts as a means of exploring individual and collective forms of identity. A case study approach demonstrates how Shakespeare’s texts are available for ideologically driven linguistic programs. Seeff introduces the African Theatre, Cape Town, in 1801, multilingual site of the first recorded performance of a Shakespeare play in Southern Africa where rival, amateur theatrical groups performed in turn, in English, Dutch, German, and French. Chapter 3 offers three vectors of a broadening Shakespeare diaspora in English, Afrikaans, and Setswana in the second half of the nineteenth century. Chapter 4 analyses André Brink’s Kinkels innie Kabel, a transposition of Shakespeare’s The Comedy of Errors into Kaaps, as a radical critique of apartheid’s obsession with linguistic and ethnic purity. Chapter 5 investigates John Kani’s performance of Othello as a Xhosa warrior chief with access to the ancient tradition of Xhosa storytellers. Shakespeare in Mzansi, a televisual miniseries uses black actors, vernacular languages, and local settings to Africanize Macbeth and reclaim a cross-cultural, multilingualism. An Afterword assesses the future of Shakespeare in a post-rainbow, decolonizing South Africa. Global Sha Any reader interested in Shakespeare Studies, global Shakespeare, Shakespeare in performance, Shakespeare and appropriation, Shakespeare and language, Literacy Studies, race, and South African cultural history will be drawn to this book 1.
