    Wenngleich die Hagiografie eine zentrale Gattung der Geez-Literatur ist, ist über ihren Schaffensprozess fast nichts bekannt. Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht ein hagiografisches Werk, dessen Entstehung in der altäthiopischen Philologie auf einzigartige Weise dokumentiert ist. Dank solider Manuskriptbefunde war es möglich, den komplexen Entstehungsprozess einer indigenen Hagiografie zuverlässig zu rekonstruieren. Es handelt sich um das hagiografische Werk zu Śarṣ́a Ṗeṭros, ein heiliger Mönch, der in der zweiten Hälfte des 15. Jh. lebte und in Dabra Warq (Ost-Goǧǧām, Äthiopien) als Heiliger verehrt wird. Die Hagiografie von Śarṣ́a Ṗeṭros besteht aus mehreren Werktexten, darunter zwei Versionen seiner Heiligenvita: die Kurzvita (i.e. der Sǝnkǝssār-Eintrag) und die Langvita (d.h. das Gadl), jeweils in zwei Fassungen (I und II). Sämtliche Werktexte sind in verschiedenen ausschließlich um 1900 angelegten Handschriften überliefert. Die Mehrheit des der Dissertation zugrundeliegenden Materials (Handschriften, Wandmalereien, Interviews) wurde auf eigenen Feldforschungen gesammelt. Die schöpferischen Arbeitsprozesse konnten nach eingehender Untersuchung der Textzeugen im Detail nachgezeichnet werden. Sie umfassen die Ausarbeitung der Langvita auf Grundlage der Kurzvita als Ausgangstext, die intensive Um-Schreibung der Langvita resultierend in einer zweiten Fassung und schließlich die Kompilation einer zweiten Fassung der Kurzvita. Von herausragender Bedeutung für die Rekonstruktion der Werkgenese ist eine in der altäthiopischen Philologie bisher einzigartige Handschrift, die zunächst als temporärer Textträger für die Langvita und kurz darauf als Arbeitsbuch für die Um-Schreibung zu einer zweiten Fassung diente. Doch erst die Betrachtung der Genese des gesamten Werkes offenbart die enorme Komplexität des schöpferischen Schaffensprozesses, der sich an verschiedenen Orten vollzogen hat. Wesentliches Kennzeichen ist, dass es sich um ein Gemeinschaftswerk handelt. Dabei waren nicht bloß Schreiber, sondern Hagiografen mit hohen literarischen Kenntnissen beteiligt. Die Ausarbeitung der langen Heiligenvita oblag der mehrere Tagesreisen entfernt liegenden autoritativen Institution Dabra Sān in ʾƎnfrāz, das wohl einst eine literarische Werkstatt führte. Mindestens zwei Vitenautoren waren beteiligt, die um 1900 ihren fertigen Text in ein maschinell produziertes Papierkontobuch hineinschrieben. Die handwerkliche Herstellung eines der Verehrung des Heiligen würdigen Pergamentkodexes oblag der Wirkstätte Dabra Warq. Dort allerdings nahmen vier Redaktoren zunächst eine weitreichende auf ganz bestimmten Zielen ausgerichtete Um-Schreibung vor (u.a. wurde ein neuer Gründungsmythos eingeführt). Hiernach legte ein Berufsschreiber einen wertvollen Pergamentkodex für die Reinschrift der zweiten Fassung an. Die Fertigung der Kurzvita II ist einem oder mehreren Kompilatoren zuzuschreiben, die für ihren Text mehrere Vorlagen heranzogen, aber auch Eigenes hinzufügten. Diese Dissertation besteht aus zwei Teilen. Der erste Teil ist in neun Kapitel gegliedert und eröffnet nach einer Einführung in Thema und Struktur der Arbeit mit der Darstellung des Forschungsstandes (Kap. 1) und der Überlieferungslage (Kap. 2). Das längste Kapitel (Kap. 3) bietet die ausführlichen Beschreibungen aller relevanten Textzeugen und bildet die Grundlagenarbeit für die Darlegung der Werkgenese mittels eines kapitelweisen Vergleichs der Versionen der Vita in ihren beiden Fassungen (Kap. 4) sowie für die Abhandlung der Fragen nach Schreibheimat und Entstehungszeit der Werktexte und seiner Zeugen (Kap. 5). Hiernach werden die zeitgeschichtlichen Umstände aufgezeigt, die den Überlieferungsgang und die Textausgestaltung beeinflusst haben (Kap. 6). Abschließend werden die Historizität der grundtextlichen Berichte über die drei Klostergründungen beleuchtet (Kap. 7) sowie die Wirkungsgeschichte der neuen Fassung der Heiligenvita (Kap. 8) kurz umrissen. Der erste Teil endet mit der Beschreibung und Rechtfertigung des editorischen Verfahrens (Kap. 9). Ein Index zum ersten Teil der Dissertation, zwei Tabellen, eine Karte und 58 Abbildungen sollen die Benutzung der Arbeit erleichtern. Eine vollständige Ausgabe der umfangreichen Werktexte war aufgrund der eingehenden Untersuchung der Werkgenese im Rahmen dieser Arbeit nicht mehr möglich. Solche Abschnitte der Werktexte, die für das Verständnis des Entstehungsprozesses von tragender Bedeutung sind, werden in einer synoptischen, den Prozess der Werkgenese abbildenden Edition nebst deutscher Übersetzung und einem ausführlichen Kommentar bereitgestellt. Diese Teiledition bildet den zweiten Teil der Dissertation. Die Arbeit verdankt ihre Gestalt und Ergebnisse zwar auch den eigenen beharrlichen Feldforschungen, aber ganz im Wesentlichen den unermüdlichen Hüterinnen und Hütern der Manuskripte in Äthiopien und ihrer mir gewährten unschätzbaren Unterstützung. Ihnen ist diese Arbeit gewidmet. ; Even though hagiography is a substantial genre of Geez literature, almost nothing is known about the process of creation of hagiographical texts. This PhD dissertation examines a hagiographical work whose genesis is documented in a way that is unique among Ethiopic hagiography. Thanks to solid manuscript evidence it was possible to reliably reconstruct the complex creation process of this indigenous hagiography. It is the hagiography of the monk Śarṣ́a Ṗeṭros, who lived in the second half of the fifteenth century and who is venerated as a saint in Dabra Warq (East Goǧǧām, Ethiopia). The hagiography of Śarṣ́a Ṗeṭros comprises several texts including two versions of his Life: the short (i.e. the commemorative notice for the Sǝnkǝssār) and the long Life (i.e. the gadl), each in two redactions (I and II). ). All texts are transmitted in different manuscripts that were produced around the turn of the nineteenth century. Most of the text witnesses and other valuable materials were photographed during my own field trips to Goǧǧām, ʾƎnfrāz, and Bagemdǝr. A comprehensive and vivid picture of the creative work processes could be build up after a thorough examination of the extant text witnesses. The processes include the creation of the saint’s Long Life based on the Short Life as the source text, the intensive rewriting of the Long Life resulting in a second redaction and finally the compilation of a second version of Short Life. Of outstanding importance for the reconstruction of the work’s genesis is a paper manuscript, unique in Ethiopic philology, which served first as a temporary text carrier for the Long Life I and shortly afterwards as a ‘workbook’ for the rewriting to the Long Life II. A crucial discovery is, however, that the hagiography of Śarṣ́a Ṗeṭros is in fact a collaborative work. Not only scribes, but highly skilled hagiographers were involved in the creation processes that took place in different institutions. It appears very plausible to attribute the creation of the Long Life I to the authoritative institution Dabra Sān in ʾƎnfrāz where the Life was designed and crafted around 1900. At least two authors were involved, who chose a machine-produced paper account book as a text carrier for their text. The production of a parchment codex suitable for the saint’s veneration and rituals was left to the place of veneration. In Dabra Warq, however, the paper book was not simply copied ‘as is’. Rather, it served as a ‘workbook’ for four redactors who made dramatic alterations (e.g., a new founding narrative was incorporated). The paper ‘workbook’ was ultimately given to a professional scribe who produced a beautiful parchment codex and fair copied therein the Long Life II in 1910 at the latest. Sometime afterwards the Short Life II was created which can be attributed to one or more compilers who used several Vorlagen and added own details. This PhD dissertation consists of two parts. The first part is divided into nine chapters, and after the Introduction, opens with the presentation of the current state of research (Ch. 1) and the state of transmission (Ch. 2). The longest chapter (Ch. 3) comprises the detailed descriptions of all relevant text witnesses and forms the basis for the following reconstruction of the work’s creation process through a chapter-wise comparison of the long and short version of the Life in both redactions (Ch. 4), as well as for discussion of the questions concerning the place of writing and the time of creation of the texts and its witnesses (Ch. 5). The contemporary context and the historical factors that influenced the creation of the work are presented next (Ch. 6). Finally, the historicity of the three founding narratives is examined (Ch. 7), and the reception and impact of the rewritten Life are outlined Ch. 8). The first part ends with a description and justification of the editorial technique I used (Ch. 9). An Index to the first part of the dissertation, two tables, a map, and fifty-eight figures are intended to facilitate the reading of the dissertation. The detailed and comprehensive examination of the work’s genesis did not allow a complete edition of the work. All parts of the texts that are relevant for the understanding of the work’s creation process are presented in a synoptic edition accompanied by a German translation and a detailed commentary. This partial edition forms the second part of the dissertation. Form and results of this dissertation are to a large extent due to the multiple field trips during which most of the material was collected, but the project exists at all only thanks to the unflagging efforts of the guardians of the manuscripts in Ethiopia, to whom the dissertation is dedicated.

    The present dissertation contains a critical edition and annotated translation of the Tiṇaimālai Nūṟṟaimpatu (TN), one of the Kīḻkkaṇakku Akam works. This is a corpus of six poetical texts from the late-classical period of Tamil literature representing the genre of love poetry (akam). As such, these texts form the direct continuation of the poetry found in the Caṅkam works, the oldest stratum of Tamil literature. Unlike Caṅkam literature, however, the Kīḻkkaṇakku Akam works have largely been ignored by scholarship. This dissertation aims at laying out the necessary philological groundwork for a further study of the Kīḻkkaṇakku Akam works by presenting a critical edition and annotated translation of the TN, the longest and most remarkable of these texts. The introduction to this dissertation briefly introduces the TN and the corpus of which it forms part. Furthermore, it describes the available witnesses for the TN and their interrelation. Nine manuscripts of the TN can be located today. As it is shown, five of these manu-scripts are copies of other manuscripts or even of a printed edition, which leaves us with four primary witnesses. It is shown that these can be grouped into two strands of transmission, one that is represented by the manuscripts A1, A2, and A3, and one that is represented by the man-uscript B. The accepted text of the TN was established by the first edition of this text, which was published by Rā. Irākavaiyaṅkār (Irā.) in 1904. As it is shown, this edition was based on only one of these ms., namely A1, and did not take into consideration the other strand of transmission, represented by the manuscript B. The centrepiece of this dissertation is the critical edition and annotated translation. On the basis of the available witnesses, it is in many cases possible to improve the text of the TN as it has been established by Irā. Moreover, the critical edition contains an apparatus that reports all variants found in the primary witnesses, making it possible to reassess the choices made in the present edition. The annotated translation aims at a close rendering of the word-ing of the poems and thus has to be understood as a tool for philological analysis. The annota-tions weigh different possibilities of interpretation and discuss uncertainties. Quite a number of textual problems, however, remains, especially in the case of the final section of the TN, which has been transmitted only in a very corrupted form. Nevertheless, the present disserta-tion hopefully can contribute towards a better understanding of the TN and thus open up a window to a so far neglected area of Tamil literary history. ; Die vorliegende Arbeit beinhaltet eine kritische Edition und annotierte Übersetzung des Tiṇaimālai Nūṟṟaimpatu, eines der Kīḻkkaṇakku-Akam-Werke. Hierbei handelt es sich um ein Korpus von sechs poetischen Texten aus der spätklassischen Periode der tamilischen Literatur, die das Genre der Liebesdichtung (akam) vertreten. Als solche stellen diese Texte die direkte Fortsetzung der Dichtung dar, die sich in der Caṅkam-Literatur, der ältesten Schicht der tami-li¬schen Literatur, findet. Anders als die Caṅkam-Literatur sind die Kīḻkkaṇakku-Akam-Werke bislang aber von der Forschung weitgehend ignoriert worden. Ziel dieser Arbeit ist es, die notwendige philologische Grundlagenarbeit für eine weitere Erforschung der Kīḻkkaṇakku-Akam-Werke zu leisten. Zu diesem Zweck wurde eine kritische Edition und annotierte Über-setzung des TN, des längsten und bemerkenswertesten dieser Texte, angefertigt. In der Einleitung werden das TN und das Korpus, zu dem dieser Text gehört, kurz vorgestellt. Weiterhin werden die Textzeugen des TN und ihr Verhältnis zueinander vorge-stellt. Es sind neun Handschriften des TN bekannt. Es lässt sich zeigen, dass fünf dieser Handschriften Kopien einer der anderen Handschriften oder sogar einer gedruckten Textaus-gabe sind. Damit bleiben vier Handschriften als primäre Textzeugen. Diese lassen sich in zwei Überlieferungs¬stränge teilen, von denen der eine durch die Handschriften A1, A2 und A3 und der andere durch die Handschrift B vertreten ist. Die heute umlaufende Textform des TN wurde durch die erste gedruckte Textausgabe definiert, welche 1904 von Rā. Irākavaiyaṅkār (Irā.) veröffentlicht wurde. Wie es sich zeigen lässt, beruht diese auf nur einer Handschrift, nämlich A1, und lässt den anderen Überlieferungsstrang, welcher durch die Handschrift B vertreten ist, außer Acht. Der Hauptteil dieser Arbeit ist die kritische Edition und annotierte Übersetzung. Auf Grundlage der verfügbaren Textzeugen war es in vielen Fällen möglich, den Text des TN, wie er von Irā. festgelegt wurde, zu verbessern. Darüberhinaus beinhaltet die Edition einen kriti-schen Apparat, der alle Lesarten, die sich in den Handschriften finden, verzeichnet. Damit ist es möglich, die Entscheidungen, die in dieser Edition getroffen wurden, nachzufollziehen und ggf. neu zu bewerten. Die annotierte Übersetzung versucht sich an einer genauen Wiedergabe des Wortlauts der Gedichte und dient somit als Werkzeug für eine philologische Auseinander-setzung mit dem Text. In den Anmerkungen werden verschiedene Möglichkeiten der Interpre-tation abgewogen und unklare Stellen besprochen. Vor allem im Fall des letzten Abschnittes des TN, der in einer stark korrumpierten Form überliefert worden ist, bleiben einige Probleme bestehen. Dennoch kann diese Arbeit hoffentlich zu einem besseren Verständnis des TN bei-tragen und somit einen Zugang zu einem bislang vernachlässigten Bereich der tamilischen Literaturgeschichte eröffnen.
