    How do we read after the so-called death of literature? If we are to attend to the proclamations that the representational apparatuses of literature and politics are dead, what aesthetic, ethical, and political possibilities remain for us today? Our critical moment, Graff Zivin argues, demands anarchaeological reading: reading for the blind spots, errors, points of opacity or untranslatability in works of philosophy and art.Rather than applying concepts from philosophy in order to understand or elucidate cultural works, the book exposes works of philosophy, literary theory, narrative, poetry, film, and performance art and activism to one another. Working specifically with art, film, and literature from Argentina (Jorge Luis Borges, Juán José Saer, Ricardo Piglia, César Aira, Albertina Carri, the Internacional Errorista), Graff Zivin allows such thinkers as Levinas, Derrida, Badiou, and Rancière to be inflected by Latin American cultural production. Through these acts of interdiscursive and interdisciplinary (or indisciplinary) exposure, such ethical and political concepts as identification and recognition, decision and event, sovereignty and will, are read as constitutively impossible, erroneous. Rather than weakening either ethics or politics, however, the anarchaeological reading these works stage and demand opens up and radicalizes the possibility of justice

    This study traces the connection of infinity and Levinasian ethics in 21st-century fiction. It tackles the paradox of how infinity can be (re-)presented in the finite space between the covers of a book and finds an answer that combines conceptual metaphor theory with concepts from classical narratology and beyond, such as mise en abyme, textual circularity, intertextuality or omniscient narration. It argues that texts with such structures may be conceptualised as infinite via Lakoff and Núñez’s Basic Metaphor of Infinity. The catachrestic transfer of infinity from structure to text means that the texts themselves are understood to be infinite. Taking its cue from the central role of the infinite in Emmanuel Levinas’s ethics, the function of such ‘fictions of infinity’ turns out to be ethical: infinite textuality disrupts reading patterns and calls into question the reader’s spontaneity to interpret. This hypothesis is put to the test in detailed readings of four 21st-century novels, David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas, Jeanette Winterson’s The Stone Gods, Ian McEwan’s Saturday and John Banville’s The Infinities. This book thus combines ethical criticism with structural aesthetics to uncover ethical potential in fiction

    Interpretation of ancient Greek literature is often enough distorted by the preconceptions of modern times, especially on ancient morality. This is often equivalent to begging the question. If we think e.g. of aretê, which has different meanings in different contexts, we shall think in English (or in Modern Greek or in French or in German) and shall falsify the phenomena. If we are to understand the Greek concept e.g. of aretê we must study the nature of the situations in which it is applied. For it is an important fact in the study of Greek society that the Greeks used the one word (e.g. aretê) where we use different words. If we are to understand properly the texts, we have to view them in their historical and social context. Ancient Greek thought needs to be studied together with politics, ethics, and economic behaviour. Moreover, the best insights can be found in those who confine themselves to the terms of each ancient author's analysis. From this principle each of the contributions of the volume begins

    Die ethische Relevanz von Literatur wird nicht selten an deren Anschlussfähigkeit an moralische Vernunftnormen wie Urteils-, Entscheidungs- und Orientierungsfähigkeit bemessen. Die Studie problematisiert diese moralphilosophische Überformung des ethical turn und weist auf einen (literatur-)ethischen Unterstrom hin, der auf Desorientierung, Entsubjektivierung und Urteilsenthaltung zuläuft. Derartig ›verantwortungslosen‹ Praktiken ist Roland Barthes' Vorlesung Das Neutrum gewidmet, die mit Foucaults Systematik der Selbstverhältnisse und Deleuzes spinozistischer Ethologie als Ethik des Selbst rekonstruiert wird. In Robert Musils und Robert Walsers Romanen kommt eine ethologische Suchbewegung zum Tragen, die vom Phantasma des Neutrums angetrieben wird und eigenschaftslose Existenzweisen hervorbringt.

    ›Skandale‹ um geheim gehaltene Verstrickungen in den Nationalsozialismus haben u. a. mit Grass, Andersch oder Walser zentrale Mitglieder der Gruppe 47 betroffen. Die Studie fragt erstmals systematisch nach der Bedeutung dieser Einflüsse für die literarischen Texte der Gruppe. Ausgehend vom gegenwärtigen Bild der Gruppe 47, von Theorien narrativer Ethik und der Geschichtsforschung zur ›NS-Moral‹ untersucht die Studie diskursive Verknüpfungen von Moral und Zugehörigkeit in den wichtigsten Texten der Gruppe 47. Qualitative und quantitative Analysen zeigen die Vorherrschaft eines partikularen Moralverständnisses sowie in mehreren Texten einen Zusammenhang dieser Moralvorstellungen mit literarischem Antisemitismus. Daneben finden sich - u. a. in Bezugnahmen auf Bubers dialogisches Prinzip, das gerade die Hinwendung zum ›radikal Anderen‹ als ethisches Handeln konzipiert - auch alternative Ethiken; allerdings oft in Texten marginalisierter oder als untypisch geltender Mitglieder wie Bachmann und Celan.

    Trotz der steigenden Zahl an Computerspielern weltweit markiert die moralische Einordnung von Computerspielhandlungen ein bislang ungelöstes Rätsel der philosophischen Ethik. Angesichts der Brisanz der Thematik im Alltag (zu sehen an der 'Killerspiel-Debatte') ist augenfällig, dass es einer differenzierten fachlichen Klärung des Phänomens bedarf: Kann das Spielen von Computerspielen unmoralisch sein? Zur Beantwortung dieser Frage erörtert der Autor zunächst, was wir überhaupt tun, wenn wir Computerspiele spielen: Über welche Art von Handlung sprechen wir? Im zweiten Schritt erfolgt eine moralische Einordnung, die erschließt, ob (und wenn ja, warum) manche Computerspielhandlungen moralisch problematisch sind. Die hier angestellten Überlegungen gewähren einen grundlegenden Einblick in die normative Dimension des Computerspielens. Samuel Ulbricht hat in Stuttgart Philosophie und Deutsch auf Lehramt studiert und dort sein erstes Staatsexamen mit Auszeichnung absolviert. Für seine Abschlussarbeit zur Ethik des Computerspielens erhielt er den "Preis der Freunde der Universität Stuttgart". Aktuelle Forschungsschwerpunkte sind normative Unterschiede der Moraltheorien, Problembereiche der angewandten Ethik sowie die Ästhetik und Ethik des Computerspielens. Derzeit unterrichtet er die Fächer Deutsch und Ethik am Liselotte-Gymnasium in Mannheim.

    Die Studie erfasst das Kunstprogramm MERZ des Avantgarde-Künstlers Kurt Schwitters (1887–1948) als autonomieästhetischen Entwurf und stellt es damit in eine Diskurstradition, die um 1800 ihren Anfang genommen hat. Im ersten Schritt werden aus den grundlegenden Konzeptionen ästhetischer Autonomie (Karl Philipp Moritz, Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Schiller, Friedrich Schlegel und Novalis) Kernmerkmale des ästhetisch Autonomen abgeleitet. Die Untersuchung betrachtet MERZ daraufhin vor der Folie dieser Merkmale und zeigt, dass Schwitters zentrale Impulse des autonomieästhetischen Diskurses einerseits fortschreibt und andererseits einlöst. Verschiedenste Texte/Artefakte des ›Allround‹-Künstlers rücken dabei in den Blick. Im Ergebnis steht die Erkenntnis, dass das Verhältnis von ›ästhetischer Autonomie‹ und ›historischer Avantgarde‹ – von Schwitters ausgehend – als genealogisch zu denken ist.
