    The court of King Arthur, the center of the Arthurian romances that were so popular in the Middle Ages, is illuminated anew in this book from an interdisciplinary perspective as an institution which is fictionally staged, stabilized and problematized. The book explores the forces, figures and positions that constitute or endanger the court as a picture of society in miniature or as a literary experiment. Finally, the contributions critically question the <ideality> of the court of King Arthur and investigate the function and reception of the court even in contexts remote from courts.

    65 Jahre nach der Gründung der Internationalen Artusgesellschaft und nach der Formulierung des "doppelten Kursus" durch Hugo Kuhn (1948) fragt die Artusforschung nach ihrem aktuellen Stand im Kontext einer Literaturwissenschaft als Kulturwissenschaft, indem sie gezielt kulturwissenschaftliche Fragestellungen historisiert. Junge und erfahrene Wissenschaftler(innen) aus verschiedenen Ländern Europas und den USA erlauben einen Einblick in ihre laufenden Forschungsarbeiten zur Artusliteratur. Am Beispiel deutscher, französischer, portugiesischer, niederländischer und englischer Artusromane verhandeln sie zentrale Probleme aus den Bereichen der Gender Studies, der Spiritualitätsforschung, Literatursoziologie und Gewaltforschung, der Narratologie und Medienkulturwissenschaft. Gefragt wird u.a. nach der semantischen Aufladungen von Lichteffekten in der Literatur, nach der Kodierung von Sinnlosigkeit und Paradoxie, nach der Signalfunktion von Namen und nach dem Verhältnis von Gewalt und Spiritualität. In einem weiten Netz vielfältig miteinander verknüpfter Fragestellungen erweisen sie eindrücklich, welchen reichen Beitrag die interdisziplinäre Artusforschung zum Dialog über kulturwissenschaftliche Grundprobleme liefern kann.

    Oft ist vom ‚Artusmythos‘ die Rede, wobei ‚Mythos‘ alltagssprachlich letztlich alles Altertümliche, Bedeutungs- oder Geheimnisvolle bezeichnen kann. Dem steht eine aktuelle geisteswissenschaftliche Diskussion über den Begriff des ‚Mythos‘ gegenüber. Die Germanistik übernimmt hierbei meist eine Vorreiterrolle. Der vorliegende Band öffnet die Diskussion programmatisch für den interdisziplinären Dialog mit den anderen Philologien. Fokussiert auf das Feld der Artusliteratur, fragt der Band danach, welches Verständnis von ‚Mythos‘ welchen Phänomenen im arthurischen Roman angemessen ist. Inhaltlich wird der Begriff mit vorchristlichen Glaubens- und Weltmodellen verbunden; die Beiträge analysieren die Nachwirkung des mythischen Substrats in der Artusdichtung. Strukturell und formal wird der ‚Mythos‘ als eine a-kausale, zeitlose Erzählform verstanden, als eine Alternative zur Historiographie; zuweilen nähert er sich dem Fiktionalen, Magischen oder Symbolischen an. Deutlich wird, wie die einzelnen Romane je anders mit dem Mythischen umgehen, es destruieren, funktionalisieren oder restituieren. Der Band zeigt damit nachdrücklich, dass es einen literaturwissenschaftlichen Begriff des ‚Mythos‘ jenseits der Einzeltexte nicht geben kann.
