    Abstract ; Diese Dissertation soll einen Beitrag zur Diskussion um die Fragestellung leisten, inwiefern das Marionettenmotiv Goethes Roman "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre", Kleists Aufsatz "Über das Marionettentheater" und seine Dramen verbindet. Die Verbindung zwischen Goethes Roman und Kleists Aufsatz besteht im Motiv der Marionette. Ausgehend von dem ästhetischen Ansatz, dem Konzept der Grazie bei Schiller, Goethe und Kleist, erfolgt eine Auseinandersetzung mit den kunsttheoretischen Aufsätzen von Goethe, Schiller und Winckelmann. Des Weiteren wird in dieser Dissertation untersucht, ob Goethes Roman "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre" grundlegend für das theoretische Modell aus Kleists Aufsatz "Über das Marionettentheater" und für seine Dramen ist. Das Motiv der Marionette ist sowohl in "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre" als auch in Kleists Aufsatz "Über das Marionettentheater" vorhanden. Es wird analysiert, inwiefern dieses Motiv die beiden Werke verbindet und ob in literaturwissenschaftlicher Hinsicht eine Entwicklung von Goethes Roman zu Kleists Aufsatz "Über das Marionettentheater" und zu seinen Dramen stattfindet. Die Auseinandersetzung Goethes mit Shakespeare innerhalb des Romans spiegelt die Figur "Wilhelm" wider. An dieser Stelle der Dissertation erfolgt eine Gegenüberstellung der Figuren "Hamlet" und "Wilhelm"/"Hamlet" und "Prinz Friedrich von Homburg", um herauszuarbeiten, dass diese Figuren sowohl in einer realen Welt als auch in einer Traumwelt leben. Thema und Fragestellung sind ein neuer Beitrag in der Diskussion um die dichterischen Werke von Goethe und Kleist, da in dieser Arbeit nachgewiesen werden konnte, dass Kleist das Motiv der Marionette aus dem Roman "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre" in seinem Aufsatz und seinen Dramen verarbeitet hat, um zu einem neuen, mechanischen Modell zu gelangen. Es entstand somit auch eine Weiterentwicklung in der Literatur, von der Beschreibung des inneren Empfindens zum äußeren Ausdruck und zum Verhalten der Figuren. Ein Vergleich der beiden Werke, Goethes Roman und Kleists Aufsatz, wurde in der Forschungsliteratur noch nie in Erwägung gezogen. ; Abstract ; This doctoral thesis make a contribution to the discussion about the question, to what extent the motiv oft the marionette in Goethe's novel "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre", is combined with Kleist's essay "Über das Marionettentheater" and his dramas. The connection between Goethe's novel and Kleist's essay exists in the motive of the marionette. To emanate from the aesthetic projection, the concept of the grace in Schiller, Goethe and Kleist, is under discussion with the art-theoretical essays of Goethe, Schiller and Winckelmann. Furthermore will be investigated, whether Goethe's novel "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre" is based on the theoretical model of Kleist's essay "Über das Marionettentheater" and his dramas. The motive of the marionette exists during "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre" as well as in Kleist's essay "Über das Marionettentheater". It is analyzed, to what extent this motive connects both works and whether in literature-scientific regard a development of Goethe's novel to Kleist's essay "Über das Marionettentheater" and his dramas takes place. The discussion between Goethe and Shakespeare within the novel reflects to the character "Wilhelm". At this point of the doctoral thesis a confrontation of the characters "Hamlet" and "Wilhelm" / "Hamlet" and "Prinz Friedrich von Homburg" is provided, in order to prove that these figures live in a real world as well as in a fictional world. Subject and question are a new contribution in the discussion about the poetic works of Goethe and Kleist. It was proven that in this work Kleist has processed the motive of the marionette from the novel "Wilhelm Meisters Lehrjahre" in his article and his dramas to reach a new mechanical model. A comparison of both works, Goethe's novel and Kleist's essay, was never taken into consideration in the research literature.

    Abstract ; Das zutiefst feminisierte Konstrukt ‚Heimat‘ ist – sowohl als historischer Gegenstand als auch als literarisches Motiv – kontinuierlich bestimmten kulturellen, politischen und ideologischen Transformationsakten, Dynamisierungen und Recycling-Prozessen unterworfen, die insbesondere in der Literatur sichtbar werden. Derart sedimentiert tritt ‚Heimat‘ in Erzähltexten der Gegenwartsliteratur in Erscheinung, wird dort als historischer Gegenstand kritisch reflektiert, als Motiv zerrbildartig tradiert, hierin zugleich transformiert und dabei in auffallender Häufigkeit zu einer Kategorie der Zurichtung umgestaltet, die vor allem in der Synthese von ‚Körper‘ und ‚Geschlecht‘ ihren Ausdruck findet: Imaginationen vom ‚schwachen Geschlecht‘ werden in Bildern körperlicher Gewalt und Auslieferung erprobt und sind besonders häufig als Griffe ins Frauenhaar bzw. als Eingriffe in die weibliche ‚Haarbiografie‘ markiert. ‚Heimat‘ arriviert hierin zu einer Folie, auf der Figurationen (und Zirkulationen) von Macht in geschlechtlich codierten Körperbildern gespiegelt und verhandelt werden.

    Other ; Stemmatology, or the reconstruction of the transmission history of texts, is a field that stands particularly to gain from digital methods. Many scholars already take stemmatic approaches that rely heavily on computational analysis of the collated text (e.g. Robinson and O’Hara 1996; Salemans 2000; Heikkilä 2005; Windram et al. 2008 among many others). Although there is great value in computationally assisted stemmatology, providing as it does a reproducible result and allowing access to the relevant methodological process in related fields such as evolutionary biology, computational stemmatics is not without its critics. The current state-of-the-art effectively forces scholars to choose between a preconceived judgment of the significance of textual differences (the Lachmannian or neo-Lachmannian approach, and the weighted phylogenetic approach) or to make no judgment at all (the unweighted phylogenetic approach). Some basis for judgment of the significance of variation is sorely needed for medieval text criticism in particular. By this, we mean that there is a need for a statistical empirical profile of the text-genealogical significance of the different sorts of variation in different sorts of medieval texts. The rules that apply to copies of Greek and Latin classics may not apply to copies of medieval Dutch story collections; the practices of copying authoritative texts such as the Bible will most likely have been different from the practices of copying the Lives of local saints and other commonly adapted texts. It is nevertheless imperative that we have a consistent, flexible, and analytically tractable model for capturing these phenomena of transmission. In this article, we present a computational model that captures most of the phenomena of text variation, and a method for analysis of one or more stemma hypotheses against the variation model. We apply this method to three ‘artificial traditions’ (i.e. texts copied under laboratory conditions by scholars to study the properties of text variation) and four genuine medieval traditions whose transmission history is known or deduced in varying degrees. Although our findings are necessarily limited by the small number of texts at our disposal, we demonstrate here some of the wide variety of calculations that can be made using our model. Certain of our results call sharply into question the utility of excluding ‘trivial’ variation such as orthographic and spelling changes from stemmatic analysis.

    Abstract ; L'image de Voltaire dans la critique allemande a été déterminée par le jugement que les critiques ont porté sur la Révolution française. Pour les critiques contre-révolutionnaires, les philosophes du 18e siècle avaient provoqué, par leurs attaques contre les fondements de l'Ancien Régime, les événements funestes de la décennie de 1789 à 1799. Cette condamnation des conservateurs a, d'une certaine manière, perpétué le mépris profond ques les écrivains allemands du Sturm und Drang avaient déjà exprimé à l'égard de la culture aristocratique de la France de leur époque. Dans le jugement que Goethe a exprimé au début du 19e siècle, on reconnaît d'une part la désapprobation des auteurs du Sturm und Drang, mais d'autre part aussi une tendance à revaloriser la tradition de l'esthétique classiciste. Pour une grande partie de la critique allemande du 19e siècle, Schiller a tracé l'image définitive de Voltaire. Au 19e siècle on en arrive à oublier le poète, le dramaturge en faveur du prosateur, du philosophe qui a conçu les idées fondamentales du libéralisme. Défendre Voltaire veut dire défendre en même temps les idées de la tolérance religieuse, de la liberté de la conscience et de la propriété individuelle.

    Abstract ; Thema der Arbeit sind die genealogischen Fürstenpreisgedichte Ynglingatal, Háleygjatal und Nóregs konungatal, eine Textgruppe aus dem Bereich der norrönen Skaldendichtung. Die Gedichte wurden vor allem im Kontext dynastischer Interessen in mittelalterlichen historiographischen Werken tradiert und sind in ihrer Datierung umstritten. Sie behandeln Genealogien norwegischer Herrschergeschlechter und die Königsreihe mit einem Fokus auf dem Tod der Fürsten. Mit der Verbindung der Aspekte Genealogie und Tod entziehen sie sich einer eindeutigen Klassifikation. Die Arbeit erfasst diese Textgruppe in ihren charakteristischen Merkmalen, ordnet sie literaturhistorisch ein und will zu einer präziseren Bestimmung der Texte beitragen. Sie gliedert sich in zwei Teile. Der erste Teil behandelt die literaturhistorischen Kontexte: Zum einen die Frage der Überlieferung von Skaldendichtung. Zum anderen werden die Gedichte in den Kontext genealogischer und enumerativer Literatur eingeordnet und zu verwandten Dichtungsarten in Beziehung gesetzt. Der zweite Teil der Arbeit besteht aus einer Analyse von Ynglingatal, Háleygjatal und Nóregs konungatal unter Berücksichtigung ihrer Überlieferung. Das wesentliche Ergebnis ist, dass sich die Vorstellung eines Texttyps genealogischer Skaldendichtung retrospektiv im 12./13. Jahrhundert entwickelt haben muss. Es zeigt sich, dass die Frage der Datierung der Texte nicht mehr zu beantworten ist, da die Texte in der Überlieferung umgestaltet wurden. Es wird deutlich, dass dieser Texttyp seine Ursprünge in einer mit dem Tod verbundenen poetischen Tradition hatte und die Texte im Zuge genealogisch-dynastischer Interessen die Form fanden, in der sie in der Historiographie überliefert wurden. Dort schließlich begegnen Ynglingatal und Háleygjatal als emblematische Vertreter wikingerzeitlicher Skaldendichtung. Die Arbeit zeigt, dass die überlieferungsgeschichtliche Perspektive ein unabdingbarer Teil der Analyse von Skaldengedichten sein muss. ; Abstract ; The topic of this paper are the genealogical praise poems Ynglingatal, Háleygjatal and Nóregs konungatal, a text group within the Old Norse skaldic poetry. The poems were transmitted in medieval historiographic works, above all within the context of dynastic interests. The dating remains controversial. They deal with the genealogies of the Norwegian dynasties and the order of the kings, with a focus on the dukes’ deaths. By linking the aspects of genealogy and death, they elude a distinct literary classification. This paper covers this text group in its characteristic features, classifies it in a literary-historical context and aims at contributing to a more precise determination of the texts. It is divided into two parts. The first part deals with the literary-historical contexts, firstly with the issue of the transmission of skaldic poetry. Then the poems are analysed within the context of genealogical and enumerative literature, and are seen in connection to related kinds of poetry. The second part of the paper is an analysis of Ynglingatal, Háleygjatal and Nóregs konungatal with particular focus on their transmission. The main result is that the concept of genealogical skaldic poetry as literary genre developed retrospectively in the 12th/13th centuries. It can be shown that the issue of dating the texts cannot be answered definitively since the texts have been altered in the course of their transmission. It becomes apparent that this text type had its origins in a poetic tradition which is related to death, and which assumed the form in which it was passed on in historiographical works mainly due to genealogical and dynastic interests. Here Ynglingatal and Háleygjatal represent an emblematic representation of the viking-age skaldic poetry. The paper shows that the perspective of medieval transmission of skaldic poems needs to be an indispensable part within the analysis of that literary genre.

    Although vastly influential in German-speaking Europe, conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte) has until now received little attention in English. This genre of intellectual history differs from both the French history of mentalités and the Anglophone history of discourses by positing the concept - the key occupier of significant syntactical space - as the object of historical investigation. Contributions by distinguished practitioners and critics of conceptual history from Europe and America illustrate both the distinctiveness and diversity of the genre. The first part of the book is devoted to the origins and identity of the field, as well as methodological issues. Part two presents exemplary studies focusing either on a particular concept (such as Maurizio Viroli's 'Reason of the State') or a particular approach to conceptual history (e.g. Bernard Scholz for literary criticism and Terence Ball for political science). The final, most innovative section of the book looks at concepts and art - high, bourgeois and demotic. Here Bram Kempers discusses the conceptual history of Raphael's frescos in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Vatican; Eddy de Jongh examines the linguistic character of much Dutch genre painting; and Rolf Reichardt considers the conceptual structure implicit in card games of the French Revolution, used to induct those on the margins of literacy into the new revolutionary world-view.

    In spite of the fact that assessment criteria in general proficiency testing (GPT) is an area of extreme importance, being the expression of the underlying general proficiency construct, little has been said in the literature regarding the source of such assessment criteria. Unfortunately, even less has been done towards answering the important question of whether the application of exclusively teacher-based perceptions to GP assessment criteria is sound, given the act that context of use and test interpretation involves the general public. This paper outlines a rater cognition study that explored the GP construct by examining unguided reactions of 2 non-teacher native speakers (NSs) with 2 NS teachers. Notable quantitative and qualitative differences were found. The findings suggest that the construct of GP as rooted in the perspectives of teachers trained in the use of rating scales has questionable utility to the actual contexts where GP test scores will be interpreted, and where the abilities measured in GP tests will actually be used.
