The Narmadapradaksina is a Hindu pilgrimage which comprises the complete circumambulation of the Narmada river. The present work assembles all important Sanskrit source texts (Narmadamahatmya/Revakhanda) which constitute the textual basis for this rite and investigates their historical development which in turn allows for conclusions about the historical spread of Hinduism in the Narmada valley. Following a brief general introduction, the first part of the book comprises a text-historical investigation of the sanskritic lore, the so-called Narmadamahatmya genre. The second part represents a comparative translation of two modern pilgrim's handbooks in Hindi, which enable us to link the mythological place names of the Sanskrit texts with actual geographical locations. Part three consists of a comprehensive synoptic edition of all available Sanskrit source texts, including a complete re- edition of a largely unknown version of the Revakhanda. Part four summarizes the manyfold findings and results of the present study in maps. ; Die Narmadapradaksina ist eine hinduistische Pilgerreise, die die komplette Umwandelung des Flusses Narmada umfaßt. Die vorliegende Arbeit stellt alle wichtigen Sanskrittexte (Narmadamahatmya/Revakhanda), welche die textliche Grundlage dieses Ritus darstellen, zusammen und untersucht anhand ihres Inhaltes deren historische Entwicklung, die ihrerseits Rückschlüsse auf die historische Verbreitung des Hinduismus im Narmada Tal zuläßt. Nach einer kurzen generellen Einführung beinhaltet der erste Teil des Buches eine textgeschichtliche Untersuchung der als Narmadamahatmya bezeichneten sanskritischen Textgattung. Der zweite Teil besteht aus einer vergleichenden Übersetzung zweier moderner Pilgerhandbücher in Hindi, mit Hilfe derer sich mythologische Ortsnamen der Sanksrittexte mit aktuellen geographischen Orten verbinden lassen.
