We analyze two- and three-dimensional variants of Hotelling's model of differentiated products. In our setup, consumers can place different importance on each product attribute; this is measured by a weight in the disutility of distance in each dimension. Two firms play a two-stage game; they choose locations in stage 1 and prices in stage 2. We seek subgame- perfect equilibria. We find that all such equilibria have maximal differentiation in one dimension only; in all other dimensions, they have minimum differentiation. An equilibrium with maximal differentiation in a certain dimension occurs when consumers place sufficient importance (weight) on that attribute. Thus, depending on the importance consumers place on each attribute, in two dimensions there is a "max-min" equilibrium, a "min - max" equilibrium, or both. In three dimensions, depending on the weights, there can be a "max-min-min" equilibrium, a "min-max- min" equilibrium, a "min-min- max" equilibrium, any two of them, or all three.

    1. Introduction -- 2. Early plays -- 3. Comedies and histories -- 4. Tragic period -- 5. Last plays. Annotation First published in 1977. This book ascertains what sources Shakespeare used for the plots of his plays and discusses the use he made of them; and secondly illustrates how his general reading is woven into the texture of his work. Few Elizabethan dramatists took such pains as Shakespeare in the collection of source-material. Frequently the sources were apparently incompatible, but Shakespeare's ability to combine a chronicle play, one or two prose chronicles, two poems and a pastoral romance without any sense of incongruity, was masterly. The plays are examined in approximately chronological order and Shakespeare's developing skill becomes evident

When types of workers are imperfect substitutes, the Mincerian rate to return to human capital is negatively related to the supply of human capital. We work out a simple model for the joint evolution of output and wage dispersion. We estimate this model using cross-country panel data on GDP and Gini coefficients. The results are broadly consistent with our hypothesis of diminishing returns to education. The implied elasticity of substitution fits Katz and Murphy's (1992) estimate. A one year increase in the stock of human capital reduces the rate of return by about 2 per cent. The combination of imperfect substitution and skill biased technological change closes the gap between the Mincer equation and GDP growth regressions almost completely.

We show that controlling for subject of degree explains a significant part of the male/female gender wage differential amongst graduates. Using data from the labour force surveys of the United Kingdom and Germany, we find similar results in these two countries: subject of degree explains about 2-4 percent higher wages of male over female graduates after controlling for age, industry, region, part-time and public sector employment. This is a significant part (between 9 to 19 percent) of the overall male/female gender wage gap, and an even larger amount of the part explained by factors entered into wage equations (at around 20 to 29 percent of the explained component).

This paper addresses the question: Why and where do immigrants cluster? We examine the relative importance and interaction of two alternative explanations of immigrant clustering: (1) network externalities and (2) herd behavior. We advance the theory by presenting a framework encompassing both network and herd effects, and by delineating various types of network and herd effects in our empirical work. In order to distinguish between herd and network externalities, we use the Mexican Migration Project data. Our empirical results show that both network externalities and herds have significant effects on the migrant?s decision of where to migrate. Moreover, the significance and size of the effects vary according to the legal status of the migrant and whether the migrant is a ?new? or a ?repeat? migrant. The network-externality effect has an inverse U shape, not simply a linear positive effect as often presented in the literature. Neglecting herds and/or networks, or the inverse U shape of network effects leads to faulty conclusions about migrant behavior. -- herd effects ; networks ; immigration ; location choice

In this paper we offer a meta-analysis approach to (simulation) studies on environmental tax reform (ETR). The underlying studies look both at environmental effects (e.g. reduction in CO2 emission) and economic effects (e.g. change in gross domestic product) following such a tax reform. The statistical results suggest that the tax type, the recycling-policy and the economic model used in the simulations are all of influence on the chance a double dividend can be obtained. The results are however not entirely conclusive regarding the question which combination of policies and models will lead to a higher double dividend. Our meta-analytic experiment also shows that the specific definition of the double dividend (partly) determines the outcome. These findings should be taken into consideration applying an ETR, to prevent a situation where ETR is rejected or accepted solely due to characteristics of the underlying simulation study rather than the intrinsic ETR itself.

"Something Else Besides" The Third Way of Angela McRobbie -- 4. The Monstrous Future of Cultural Studies -- 5. Beyond Marxism and Psychoanalysis -- 6. www.culturalstudies.ac.uk Cultural Studies seems to have lost its way somewhere between today's preoccupation with the empirical and the theory revolutions of the 1980s and 90s. Assessing the work of key theorists across the history of cultural studies--Raymond Williams, Stuart Hall, Meaghan Morris and Angela McRobbie--Culture In Bits argues that the trend towards a more politicized practice is in fact not political enough; theory, and deconstruction in particular, can offer a more radical and a more political engagement.Pinpointing the ambiguities that both constitute and disturb cultural studies and outlining a radical agenda for its future, Culture in Bits is vital reading for all interested in cultural practice and theory

Regardless of the importance of growth, there are still some reasons to have a closer look at the “equity-growth-relation”. This will be shown in section 2. In some cases the issue of inequality might be neglected because it does not hinder but rather stimulate economic growth. The poor might benefit from this process even with an increasing inequality. This case will be discussed in section 3. Inequality, on the other hand, may be an impediment to economic growth and it cannot be neglected if one accepts that “growth matters”. Section 4 is dedicated to this issue. In section 5 the possibilities are discussed of combining economic growth with decreasing inequality, and section 6 contains some conclusions.

Krutch's trenchant observations about life prospering in the hostile environment of Arizona's Sonoran Desert turn to weighty questions about humanity and the precariousness of our existence, putting lie to Western denials of mind in the "lower" forms of life: "Let us not say that this animal or even this plant has 'become adapted' to desert conditions. Let us say rather that they have all shown courage and ingenuity in making the best of the world as they found it. And let us remember that if to use such terms in connection with them is a fallacy then it can only be somewhat less a fallacy to use the same terms in connection with ourselves.". Time, Days, and Page -- Intertext: The Year 1882 -- 3. Putting Things to Right Generally -- 4. Making Ordinary Writing -- Notes -- Bibliography -- Index.
