    Abstract ; Die Promotionsarbeit untersucht ca. 600 Stücke aus der Zeit von den ersten Vorläufern des Sturm und Drang bis zur Märzrevolution auf die Darstellung und die dramaturgische Funktion des Todes. Nachdem sie zunächst klärt, auf welche Weise der Tod dem Publikum bzw. dem Leser vermittelt wird, folgt eine Untersuchung im Hinblick auf vier verschiedene Aspekte: Struktur, Sprechakte, Szenenbilder und Figuren. Dabei werden unter anderem der Einfluss der Position des Todes im Stück auf dessen Darstellung geklärt, die typischen Merkmale des Sterbemonologs erläutert, das Arrangieren von Leichen im Szenenbild beschrieben und das Verhältnis des Todes von Haupt- und Nebenfiguren untersucht. In einem abschließenden Teil werden die einzelnen Ergebnisse zu einer Dramaturgie des Sterbens verknüpft und deren Leitlinien herausgearbeitet. ; Abstract ; The dissertation examines about 600 plays from the time of the first precursors of the Sturm und Drang up to the March Revolution on the depiction and dramaturgical function of death. After first clarifying the way in which death is conveyed to the public or the reader, an investigation follows with regard to four different aspects: structure, speech acts, scene images and characters. Among other things, it clarifies the influence of the position of death in the play on its representation, explains the typical features of the death monologue, describes the arrangement of corpses in the scene and examines the relationship between the death of main and minor characters. In a concluding part, the individual results are linked to a dramaturgy of dying and its guidelines are explained.

    Abstract ; Life writing scholar Julia Watson critiques the practice of genealogy as “in every sense conservative” (300) because it traditionally charts and enshrines a family’s collective biography through biologistic, heteronormative, and segregated routes. My Americanist contribution, however, zooms in on a recent development of autobiographical works that establish narratives of origin beyond normative boundaries of race and heterosexual reproduction. A number of predominantly white queer parents of black adoptees have turned their family history into children’s read-along books as a medium for pedagogical empowerment that employs first-person narration in the presumable voice of the adoptee. In Arwen and Her Daddies (2009), for instance, Arwen invites the reader into a story of family formation with the following opening words: “Do you know how I and my Dads became a family?” My analysis understands these objects as verbal-visual origin stories which render intelligible a conversion from differently radicalized strangers into kin. I frame this mode of narration as ‘adoptee ventriloquism’ that might tell us more about adult desires of queers for familial recognition than about the needs of their adopted children.

    Canada in the Frame explores a photographic collection held at the British Library that offers a unique view of late nineteenth-century and early twentieth-century Canada. The collection, which contains in excess of 4,500 images, taken between 1895 and 1923, covers a dynamic period in Canada's national history and provides a variety of views of its landscapes, developing urban areas and peoples. Colonial Copyright Law was the driver by which these photographs were acquired; unmediated by curators, but rather by the eye of the photographer who created the image, they showcase a grass-roots view of Canada during its early history as a Confederation.Canada in the Frame describes this little-known collection and includes over 100 images from it. The author asks key questions about what it shows contemporary viewers of Canada and its photographic history, and about the peculiar view these photographs offer of a former part of the British Empire in a post-colonial age, viewed from the old 'Heart of Empire'. Case studies are included on subjects such as urban centres, railroads and migration, which analyse the complex ways in which photographers approached their subjects, in the context of the relationship between Canada, the British Empire and photography

The authors pay special attention to production-specific aspects of the literary transfer process: What are the conditions to make a translation? Who is involved in the process?     Queer Ancient Ways advocates a profound unlearning of colonial/modern categories as a pathway to the discovery of new forms and theories of queerness in the most ancient of sources. In this radically unconventional work, Zairong Xiang investigates scholarly receptions of mythological figures in Babylonian and Nahua creation myths, exposing the ways they have consistently been gendered as feminine in a manner that is not supported, and in some cases actively discouraged, by the texts themselves. An exercise in decolonial learning-to-learn from non-Western and non-modern cosmologies, Xiang's work uncovers a rich queer imaginary that had been all-but-lost to modern thought, in the process critically revealing the operations of modern/colonial systems of gender/sexuality and knowledge-formation that have functioned, from the Conquista de America in the sixteenth century to the present, to keep these systems in obscurity.- -At the heart of Xiang's argument is an account of the way the unfounded feminization of figures such as the Babylonian (co)creatrix Tiamat, and the Nahua creator-figures Tlaltecuhtli and Coatlicue, is complicit with their monstrification. This complicity tells us less about the mythologies themselves than about the dualistic system of gender and sexuality within which they have been studied, underpinned by a consistent tendency in modern/colonial thought to insist on unbridgeable categorical differences. By contextualizing these deities in their respective mythological, linguistic, and cultural environments, through a unique combination of methodologies and critical traditions in English, Spanish, French, Chinese, and Nahuatl, Xiang departs from the over-reliance of much contemporary queer theory on European (post)modern thought.- Much more than a queering of the non-Western and non-modern, Queer Ancient Ways thus constitutes a decolonial and transdisciplinary engagement with ancient cosmologies and ways of thought which are in the process themselves revealed as theoretical sources of and for the queer imagination
