On the death of Edward Gibbon (1737–94), his unpublished papers were left to his friend John Baker Holroyd, first earl of Sheffield, who published them in two volumes in 1796. Gibbon had written six manuscript accounts of his own life, and, according to Sheffield, had always intended to publish his autobiography in his lifetime. The memoir as edited by Sheffield begins with Gibbon's family history, and taking in his education, travels, and career as a historian, finishes with his anxiety over the future of Europe in 1788. Sheffield then continues the story until Gibbon's death through his correspondence, providing a linking narrative, and this, together with 210 other letters to and from Gibbon, takes up Volume 1. His great work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, is also reissued (in the 1896–1900 edition by J. B. Bury) in the Cambridge Library Collection

Thomas Chatterton (1752–70) was only seventeen when he died of arsenic poisoning. Among his family and friends he was known as a versifier with a fascination for medieval manuscripts, but none suspected the true scope of his work. At eleven, he was already writing poetry, and by the end of his life his love poems, eclogues and forged medieval pieces numbered in the hundreds. Chatterton is best known for the Rowley poems, which he claimed were transcribed from the work of a fifteenth-century monk. Although the precocious skill of his forgeries, once exposed, often went unrecognised by critics, Chatterton's legacy influenced the Romantics for decades after his death. This three-volume collection of his work, edited by Joseph Cottle and Robert Southey, first appeared in 1803. Volume 1 includes his earliest poetry, and a biography by George Gregory (also reissued separately in this series)

Successors such as Wordsworth and Coleridge admired yet overshadowed William Cowper (1731–1800). Troubled by mental instability, he retreated from both the legal profession and the woman he had hoped to marry, seeking out a quiet existence in the country. In spite of his struggles, he made a translation of Homer's Iliad, produced a considerable body of poetry, and maintained many epistolary contacts. This four-volume biography, compiled by his friend and fellow poet William Hayley (1745–1820), appeared between 1803 and 1806, bringing together selected letters and unpublished poems to illuminate Cowper's personal and literary life. Featuring a frontispiece portrait engraved by William Blake, Volume 1 (1803) contains Hayley's narrative of Cowper's life, interspersed with his letters. Warm-hearted and engaging, the letters also reflect the debilitating changes of his mood and the beginnings of his troubled faith. They date from 1765, just after his first nervous collapse, to 1791

Volume 2 contains the Rowley poems, for which Chatterton is best known. Ironically, they were never published under his own name in his lifetime: he claimed that the poems were transcripts he had taken from the work of Thomas Rowley, a fifteenth-century monk. The value of these ambitious forgeries is still underappreciated

Volume 2 (1803) contains personal letters from the period 1791–4, accompanied by Hayley's biographical remarks. Also included are appendices of some of Cowper's original poems and translations from Latin and Greek, notably sections from Horace and Virgil

On the death of Edward Gibbon (1737–94), his unpublished papers were left to his friend John Baker Holroyd, first earl of Sheffield, who published them in two volumes in 1796. Volume 2 contains abstracts from Gibbon's reading, with his reflections on what he read, and extracts from his journal (sometimes in French, with a parallel translation), short pieces on various aspects of Roman history, an outline of his planned history of the world from the ninth to the end of the fifteenth century, literary criticism, a history of the House of Brunswick (ancestors of the Hanoverian British royal family), and a riposte to a criticism of his own great work, The History of the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire, which is also reissued (in the 1896–1900 edition by J. B. Bury) in the Cambridge Library Collection
