The volume explores the work of two classic authors such as Capuana and Verga under the lens of the postcolonial perspective, accepting the thesis of the Italian unification process as an internal colonisation process. The author investigates the effects of colonisation on the representation of the Sicilian rural life, highlighting areas of ambiguity and hybridism in the writings of Capuana and Verga. The two writers, living between the colonised world and the colonising world, sometimes take part in the realisation of the hegemonic national discourse, sometimes create counter-discourses, in a never definitive alternation that makes the texts of the two Veristi rich and fascinating.

The present book faces a wide range of problems concerning the history of Eastern slavic culture in its interation with cultural models, typical of Western Europe. This collective work is the final result of the french-italian congress “Fractures and Integrations between Russia, East Slavic world and the West. History and literary civilisation from the Middle Age to the Contemporary Era” (University of Florence, 16-17 april 2015): the complexity of cultural relations between Russia, Slavic East and European West is analysed enhancing the variety of points of view and benefiting of different methodological approaches as well as from perspectives, provided from different fields of study. Here we introduce new materials and new analytical methods, which are useful for studying the complex interactions between the western cultural tradition and the east oriental one, from Middle Age up to nowadays. The “fractures” and “integrations” are therefore highlighted throughout the reading or critical re-reading of textes, works and authors, who took part to the construction and the development of cultural interchange among the various european areas.

Zusammenfassung: What tend to catch Ola Rindal’s eye in the »Paris« photo series is not the city’s most obvious optical attractions but the gaps in the urban fabric. His is a not a subjectively imagined Paris. It is a Paris that exists in the real world, albeit at the edge of our field of vision. Vaguely familiar but not immediately recognizable, the side of Paris that come into view here is its non-places. We may encounter these blank or blind spots in any big city. Casually and fleetingly noticing their presence we seldom pay them very much attention. In »Paris« Rindal turns his camera at these spots to get a grasp of what goes on there. What he captures is the daily struggle for survival waged by the city’s poor and fallen — the human collateral chewed up and spat out by the big city machine. »Paris« is not a socialrealist depiction of street life, however. Like Eugène Atget, the legendary late 19th century photographer of Paris, Rindal approaches his subject in a way that perhaps best is described as forensic. His gaze is naturally drawn to the things, buildings and people that suggest a different physiognomy of Paris than the one we have become accustomed to. Homing in on cracks and fissures in his surroundings his depiction hints at the presence of violent forces beneath the city’s civilized surface.
