    Abstract ; Le problème fondamental de la société libérale du 19e siècle., c'est-à-dire l'antagonisme entre les propriétaires et les non-propriétaires avait été découvert par les philosophes du 18e siècle. Dans les œuvres des philosophes, l'homme du peuple apparaît ou comme un instrument de travail ou comme un objet d'éducation. Les philosophes se sentaient pourtant les porte-parole du Tiers état. Les présocialistes, dans leurs programmes, partaient du fait que le bonheur du plus grand nombre n'était pas encore réalisé. Saint-Simon, Fourier,Blanqui aussi bien que Michelet ont attiré l'attention sur les besoins et la misère du peuple et ils ont proposé des moyens plus ou moins concrets pour améliorer la situation de la classe laborieuse. L'étude des "Paysans" de Balzac fait découvrir en même temps que la représentation particulièrement réaliste de la misère du peuple une certaine tendance anti-démocratique de ce roman. Au pessimisme et au déterminisme balzaciens s'oppose le simple optimisme d'Eugène Sue qui aimerait nous faire croire à la responsabilité individuelle du pauvre ouvrier. Sue a renoncé à faire ressortir les déterminations sociales de ses figures; leurs actions et leurs paroles ne reflètent plus l'expérience de la réalité historique, comme celles des romans de Balzac ou de Stendhal.
