Die Ausgabe der Fragmente enthält vor allem neue Texte zur griechischen Urgeschichte, zur römischen Geschichte, zur Chronologie der biblischen und griechischen Geschichte. Die Chronik entstand in der kulturellen und politischen Debatte über die Erneuerung des Kaisertums nach der Absetzung des Tyrannen Phokas im Oktober 610; Vorbild ist die politische Struktur der römischen Republik. Main description: The world chronicle of Jo(h)annes Antiochenus is a decisive source in the development of Christian universal historiography and world chronicles in the Christian Orient. It stretches from Adam to the beginning of the reign of Heraclius (610). The author was an educated official in the imperial administration in Constantinople. The chronicle was written in the context of the cultural and political debate about the renewal of the Emperorship after the deposition of the tyrant Phokas (October 610); the model is provided by the political structure of the Roman republic. In this volume, the chronicle has been made available for the first time in a modern edition (with an Italian translation) and with a detailed introduction. The edition of the fragments includes new texts on Greek prehistory, Roman history, the chronology of biblical and Greek history, and the history, topography, and archaeology of Constantinople.     Ranulf Higden (d.1364) was a monk at the abbey of St Werburgh in Chester. His most important literary work is this universal chronicle, which survives in over a hundred Latin manuscripts, testifying to its popularity. The earliest version of it dates from 1327, but Higden continued writing until his death, expanding and updating the text. It was also continued in other monastic houses, most importantly by John Malvern of Worcester. The English translation made by John Trevisa in the 1380s was also widely circulated and is included in this work, published in nine volumes for the Rolls Series between 1865 and 1886. The chronicle shows how fourteenth-century scholars understood world history and geography. Volume 4 contains the rest of Book 3, on the Hellenistic period up to the birth of Christ, and the start of Book 4, up to the end of the first century CE
