    La monja mexicana Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz (1651-1695), cuidadosa observadora de la «comedia humana» y pensadora perspicaz, ha desafiado – sin amilanarse – a los más reconocidos poetas, escritores y figuras de su época. Su obra poética deslumbrante ha revolucionado con su mirada femenina la literatura hispánica en las postrimerías del Barroco. La Décima Musa toca todas las fibras y tonalidades. Dialoga con sus lectores y amigos. Reflexiona, juega, halaga, compadece, amonesta, enseña, lucha con sus sentimientos amorosos y religiosos, y – socarrona – se ríe de todos y de todo. Escribe y se está burlando de lo que escribe. Hasta nos dice cómo leer ciertos poemas que los lecto res se empeñan en leer mal. Hoy es tan actual como ayer. Esta nueva antología se propone subsanar las deficiencias de las ediciones existentes y presentar su vasta obra poética de una forma más coherente y auténtica.

    El mártir del Sacramento es uno de los tres autos sacramentales de sor Juana Inés de la Cruz, junto con El divino Narciso y El cetro de José. Sor Juana adapta en él la figura de san Hermenegildo, que construye con entera libertad dramática respecto de las fuentes históricas -a menudo opuestas en su valoración del príncipe visigodo- y al que convierte en un héroe religioso centro de un complejo conjunto de ideas y sentimientos que reúne motivos del martirio, la vanitas›, la reflexión sobre la fugacidad de las glorias mundanas, los conflictos políticos y familiares con el rey Leovigildo, el desengaño y la resignación a los designios divinos.
