Los moimoi de Fuengirola' is an exhibition and research project through which artist Riiko Sakkinen (b. 1976) explores notions of Finnish identity. Located on Spain?s Costa del Sol, Fuengirola is home to a community of around 30,000 Finns, the majority of whom never bother to learn the local language or customs. They live their own semi-isolated lives, spending their time comfortably in Finnish bars and relying on the services of their own Finnish shops and institutions. The Fuengirola local government has gone so far as to name itself ?Finland?s southernmost town?. The research project is a meditation on the essence of Finnishness presented in the guise of an anthropological study. The book?s editor is Pauli Sivonen, Director of the Serlachius Museums.00Exhibition: Serlachius Headquarters, Mänttä, Finland (15.06.2024 - 16.02.2025)

This report examines the allocation of Finland's green transition and digitalization-related subsidies on an an- nual basis. The analysis utilizes the business subsidy in- formation service system maintained by the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment, which provides com- prehensive data for the years 2020-2023. According to the data, the value of green subsidies has increased both relatively and absolutely since 2020. However, on an an- nual basis, the share of brown subsidies, which increase greenhouse gas emissions, has been larger than that of green subsidies every year. There is no similar growth trend for subsidies aimed at digitalization. Moreover, the value of subsidies directed towards digitalization is low- er than brown subsidies on an annual level. A provincial and sectoral comparison of the subsidies reveals that a significant portion of the subsidies is narrowly targeted to specific sectors and regions.

The Data Act, coming into effect in September 2025, imposes new obligations on manufacturers of connected products and providers of related services. This report provides insights into the markets affected by the Data Act and evaluates the scope of business activity it covers in Finland. Large and medium-sized enterprises subject to the Data Act had a turnover of over 44 billion euros in 2021, with a value added 14 billion euros, accounting for 5.8 percent of Finland's gross domestic product. When taking into account also small and micro-enterprises, which are subject to the obligation to provide data held by them to authorities in exceptional situations, the combined turnover of companies reaches 51 billion euros, with a value added of 17 billion euros, constituting 6.9 percent of GDP. The estimated value of data assets belonging to large and medium-sized enterprises subject to the Data Act is about 4.0-4.5 billion euros, while the estimated value of data assets of all companies is 5.6-6.2 billion euros. However, these figures are subject to uncertainty, mainly due to the interpretative ambiguity of the data regulation and issues related to statistical practices.

In this report, we present the current state of the Finnish food industry through statistics and propose perspectives on the future of the sector. We observe that although the wage level in the industry in Finland is relatively high compared internationally, productivity is also at a good level, resulting in good cost competitiveness. Finnish food industry is very domestically focused compared to other industries and benchmark countries. Despite lagging behind in profitability and research and development investments compared to other industries, internationally, the Finnish food industry performs excellently. The level of processing in Finnish food industry even surpasses that of benchmark countries. Interesting questions affecting the future of the food industry include changes in consumption habits, sustainability, climate change, geopolitical crises, obesity prevention, and general economic development. This overview is part of the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health's TYÖ2030 program, which encourages dialogue among stakeholders and industry representatives regarding the future of work in various sectors in Finland.

The new era of geopolitics and geoeconomy significantly alters the economic landscape and the operating environment. It is already clear that industrial policies and barriers to international trade increasingly influence the location of investment decisions. These trends challenge the foundations of the international division of labor. Our report outlines the key drivers, assumptions, and policy actions behind these changes. In addition, the report provides recommendations and key principles for a small open economy, such as Finland, on how to navigate the changing landscape.

Devan Shimoyama (b. 1989) is an American artist who explores themes related to sexuality, race and gender. His carnivalesque art weaves together childhood experiences, queerness, mythology and art history. Shimoyama employs a playful technique and bold combinations of materials such as glitter, fabric and rhinestones, sometimes working on the scale of large installations.00Fade Cut presents a selection of paintings from Shimoyama?s Barbershop series, in which he transforms the hypermasculine African-American barbershop into a fictional site of queer fantasy. Highly praised in his native United States, the barbershop installation is an imaginary space where all kinds of people are welcome to express themselves freely. In this book, Shimoyama?s themes are discussed by Pauli Sivonen, Director of the Serlachius Museums, Laura Kuurne, Head of Collections and Exhibitions, and the artist himself.00Exhibition: Serlachius Manor, Mänttä, Finland (23.03. - 18.08.2024)

This report examines the resilience of firms during crises from two perspectives: their ability to resist crises and their capacity to recover. The findings reveal that innovative firms are less likely to cease operations than other firms and are more likely to recover faster. The study further supports the notion that a high level of solvency and a strong ability to make interest payments (interest coverage ratio) reduce the risk of a firm exiting the market or experiencing an exceptionally large decline in revenue.

In economics, the regional densification of economic activity is referred to as agglomeration. The effects of agglomeration are often referred to when discussing the wider economic benefits of transportation infrastructure projects. The magnitude of these effects has not been extensively studied in Finland. In this report, we examine the impact of agglomeration on productivity in the Helsinki region, utilizing extensive registry data. We find that improved job to job accessibility increases employees' wages. However, our findings concerning the value-added at establishment level are less conclusive and statistically insignificant. Our results suggest that increased accessibility leads to increases in other operating expenses such as rents, potentially explaining the lack of statistically significant effect on value-added. Our results suggest that agglomeration benefits are predominantly intraregional, with interregional accessibility having little impact on these benefits. Thus, the ratio between the agglomeration benefits and the direct benefits of transportation infrastructure projects varies depending on the project. Including these benefits directly to cost-benefit analyses risks double counting some benefits. Taxes and similar payments on increased wages due to accessibility increases could be included as a separate item in the cost-benefit analysis.

This study examines the allocation of business subsidies introduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic to different types of companies. The results show that most of the supported companies would not have needed the subsidy, as they would have remained profitable also in the absence of it. Furthermore, companies incurring losses before the pandemic (zombie companies) received COVID-19 subsidies more often than other companies. The subsidies also directed more often to companies with productivity lower than the median productivity. The targeting of subsidies to low-productivity companies slows down future productivity development and economic growth, as labor and capital are more likely to remain in less productive businesses. The study also includes a literature review of the economic literature related to business subsidies during the COVID-19 pandemic.
