"Ignaz Goldziher (1850-1921), one of the founders of modern Arabic and Islamic studies, was a Hungarian Jew and a Professor at the University of Budapest. A wunderkind who mastered Hebrew, Latin, Greek, Turkish, Persian, and Arabic as a teenager, his works reached international acclaim long before he was appointed professor in his native country. From his initial vision of Jewish religious modernization via the science of religion, his academic interests gradually shifted to Arabic-Islamic themes. Yet his early Jewish program remained encoded in his new scholarly pursuits. Islamic studies was a refuge for him from his grievances with the Jewish establishment; from local academic and social irritations he found comfort in his international network of colleagues. This intellectual and academic transformation is explored in the book in three dimensions – scholarship on religion, in religion (Judaism and Islam), and as religion – utilizing his diaries, correspondences and his little-known early Hungarian works. "

A Szépművészeti Múzeum idén megújult grafikai kiállítóterében ismét régi mesterek alkotásainak társaságában mutatunk be kortárs műveket. A jelenlegi, második tárlaton a tájképművészet nagy klasszikusainak grafikáit Hollán Sándor faábrázolásaival állítottuk párbeszédbe.

Multilingualism, in principle and in function, has been codified in various legal instruments, in particular by the first regulation adopted by the EEC, Regulation 1/58, which remains in force today. However, like democracy, its preservation depends on a constant endeavour to explain it within the context of a long-term perspective. Multilingualism is regularly called into question on the pretext of speed and economy, as though it were more of a constraint than an aspect our shared wealth. At the Court of Justice of the European Union, multilingualism takes on a particular importance, as it determines, at the outset, how the procedures are conducted and, at a later stage, ensures that the case-law is accessible to everyone in their own language. However, legitimate requirements of efficiency and cost control remain crucial, with the result that there is constant reflection and the latest technologies are used to the fullest in order always to provide the citizen with an optimal service. This book sets out the historical, legal and political factors that have led to the emergence of strong institutional multilingualism as an instrument of equality, inclusion and progress. It describes the language regime of the institution and the manner in which multilingualism is practised there, in particular by the interpretation and legal translation services. It reflects on the points of view and arguments that are regularly raised in the press and in academic legal writing, and it proposes, on the basis of objective analyses, a strong and optimistic vision looking resolutely towards the future.

In Hungary, average initial old age pensions have risen much faster than average pensions over the past decade. Several factors have contributed to this, of which the method of valorization and official earnings statistics are of particular importance. In most countries, initial pensions are determined on the basis of a wage path of several decades, and nominal earnings of each year are valorized (indexed) by the growth of nationwide nominal wages. This is also the method used in Hungary. The comparisons presented in the study show that between 2013 and 2021, the official net wage index may have significantly overestimated the increase in national average net earnings, thus leading to a higher than justified increase in initial pensions. The paper examines several aspects of this issue, including the plausibility of a significant decline in the average pension/net wage ratio, and the dilemmas faced by policymakers in such a situation.

Our study examines social inequalities in dental visits, the status of primary and permanent teeth, the dental treatments, the availability of publicly funded dental care and health behaviours related to dental health among Hungarian children. We use all available administrative and survey data sources to provide a comprehensive picture. We show that there are already significant social differences in dental health, dental visits and health behaviours at the age of 2-3 years, which are compounded by significant social gaps in access to publicly funded dental care. These early childhood gaps often widen with age. We conclude our study with health and social policy implications that can help reduce social disparities in children's dental health.

Hungary is one of the five countries in the world most affected by the pandemic in terms of registered COVID-19 mortality up to 2023. Our research aims to identify those socioeconomic variables that explain the geographical distribution of the registered district-level mortality burden of the pandemic. OLS and spatial regression analyses were applied at the sub-regional level covering 175 areas from the outbreak of the pandemic till 31 January 2022. The higher share of elderly people and the higher respiratory death rate were associated with a more severe mortality burden due to the pandemic. Districts with a higher share of the population having tertiary educational attainment tended to have lower COVID-19 mortality rates. In contrast to much of the literature's findings, variables related to healthcare access were not found to be significantly associated with district-level COVID-19 mortality. In addition, our results indicate that the spatial term of COVID-19 mortality is significant. Positive spatial autocorrelation can be observed in some less developed districts and a few inner peripheral areas where COVID19 mortality was relatively high, and relatively developed areas like the agglomeration area of the capital in which COVID-19 mortality was low.

Our study examines social differences in health during childhood and adolescence in Hungary in the 2010s. For this analysis, we have collected administrative and survey data sources and organized them into a coherent statistical framework. These restructured data have been used to identify social inequalities in children's health and the possible causes of these inequalities. Our research shows that children's health is strongly related to the social environment in which they are born, their living conditions and income, and the behavioral characteristics of themselves and their parents.

In our study, we present the concept of locus of control, a non-cognitive ability that is increasingly researched in economics. We then review the economic literature on locus of control and show that people who believe they are in control of their lives are more successful in many areas of life. After that, we examine the data of a representative Hungarian survey, in which we mostly see the correlations revealed by the literature. The locus of control becomes more and more internal in the respondents' 20s and 30s, and then becomes more and more external again after the age of 40. In our sample, men on average have a more internal locus of control than women, and a more internal locus of control is associated with higher education and higher income. At the same time, we do not find a significant correlation between locus of control and labor market status. We find that those with more internal locus of control accumulate significantly more savings and less debt.

Due to an EU directive, with tight deadlines, the Hungarian government has to work out program, including a pension reform. The plan is to be discussed publicly and made into a law. The last public and detailed pension package was a Working Paper of the National Bank of Hungary, 2016, which needs updating. Before the government publishes a new program, I have found it worthwhile to outline a rational pension reform package, which would make the current system more efficient and fairer. First, I outline the current system, then I present the simpler and the more complicated reforms. Here I only mention the first simple step: to return to the practice of Budgetary Council between 2008 and 2010, where the Secretariate had dozens of independent experts working on issues similar to the current pension package. I do not deal with the political conditions of achieving such a reform.

In this paper, we investigate how much of the wage differences between workers and districts is explained by employee and employer characteristics and by differences in regional characteristics. For this purpose, we use the Ministry of Finance's annual wage survey, which provides detailed data on workers' earnings, individual characteristics and the employers. Our results show that individual characteristics of workers, in particular the type of job held and educational attainment, play a leading role in explaining the wage differentials observed at the individual level. The explanatory power of employer-level characteristics is secondary, but still exceeds the combined contribution of regional characteristics, which is estimated at 1-3% at most. When examining district-level average wage differentials, we find that the composition of workers and employers in districts is responsible for three quarters of spatial wage inequalities. By removing the composition effect, the standard deviation of average gross monthly wages between districts is reduced to one third. These results underline the role of policy interventions to develop human capital in catching up disadvantaged areas.
