"From the joy of their wedding day surrounded by supportive friends and family, Yaakov and Leah are soon plunged into the complex reality of their new lives together as Yaakov leaves his beloved yeshiva to work in the city, and Leah confronts the often agonizing restrictions imposed by religious laws governing even the most sexual moments of their married lives. Adding to their difficulties is the hostility of some in the community who continue to view Leah as a dangerous interloper, questioning her sincerity and adherence to religious laws and spreading outrageous rumors. In the midst of their heartfelt attempts to reach a balance between their human needs and their spiritual obligations, the discovery of a secret, forbidden relationship between troubled teenage daughter Shaindele and a local boy precipitates a maelstrom of life-changing consequences for all."

"Ronan Avni, divorced and father of two, owner of a successful carpentry, gets into the car and drives to work. A quarter of an hour later he is caught up in a creepy incident, does everything to not die, and succeeds. And then the trouble begins. To his astonishment, he finds himself in the basements of the Shin Bet, being violently interrogated for aiding and abetting terrorism. With his depleted strength, he tries to fight for his innocence, and discovers that he is trapped in a story that is bigger than himself, which all those involved in have lost control in. Noam Shalev's Eretz Ma'am Down is a fascinating thriller about a security system. This is the story of Ronen Avni, and also the story of an entire country where security is above all, and also above the law."

"Noah tried to serve the sorceress Mombizan as best he could, but it was never enough; Mombizan refused to raise him a level in the sorcery ranks. One day he decided to perform the most complicated magic of all. That way he would prove to her that he was already worthy, but at the moment of truth something went wrong: a strange song burst from his throat and made the great sorceress shrink like a deflated balloon. All her powers dissipated at once. Now he will have to carry her on a dangerous journey to the only one who can unlock the broken magic. On the way they will meet starving eels, kidnapped chickens and mountains that never stop shaking. An old story accompanies them - a story about a mysterious and outcast boy, the servant of a powerful rooster. But if it is really just an act, who is the howler in the wind?"

This study is dedicated to a single kabbalistic manuscript from the Benayahu Collection – a copy of R. Isaac Luria’s Peirush Sifra Detzni‘uta. The manuscript, copied in Safed at the very end of the sixteenth century, was sent to Italy where it was meticulously edited and marked up by the prominent halakhist and kabbalist R. Menahem Azaria da Fano. The study explores the nature of Fano’s emendations, dissects his interpretative glosses, and demonstrates the profound textual influence the manuscript exerted on other copies of the work produced in Italy during the period. Among other thing, it shows how R. Menahem Azariah da Fano read Luria’s work through an intertextual lens, using a wide range of kabbalistic works and concepts to inform his comments and edits. The short study is followed by a full facsimile edition of the manuscript – with each colored photo of the manuscript facing a full transcription of both the main text as well as Fano’s corrections and marginalia. The study represents an important contribution to the history of reading practices and an example of applying the methodologies of New Philology to the study and editing of kabbalistic manuscripts.

The medical compendium entitled Zād al-musāfir wa-qūt al-ḥāḍir (Provisions for the Traveller and Nourishment for the Sedentary) and compiled by Ibn al-Jazzār from Qayrawān in the tenth century is one of the most influential handbooks in the history of western medicine. In the eleventh century, Constantine the African translated it into Latin; this translation was the basis for several commentaries compiled from the twelfth century on. The text was also translated into Byzantine Greek and three times into medieval Hebrew. The present volume includes a new critical edition of the Arabic text of books I and II, along with an annotated English translation, as well as critical editions of Constantine’s Viaticum and the Hebrew versions by Ibn Tibbon, Abraham ben Isaac, and Do’eg ha-Edomi

Brenner's place in the Hebrew story tradition is a place of shadows. A place of others, grief and hard truth. Both in the short and charged plot of his life and in his literary work, he is Melancholy, the Black Martha of Hebrew literature. Brenner's stories express the taga of things. Their roots come from the depth of the Hebrew word, from the heart of the enterprise and the Zionist dream, as well as from the history of the modes of melancholic expression: the message of the degree of sorrow in existence. In melancholic poetics lies the complexity, explosiveness, complexity and sublimity of the Bernari text. In The Poetry of the Nerves, Yonatan Dayan speaks of melancholy as a human and literary quality, as an existential condition and as a way of expression. These guide his reading in Brenner's melancholic expression as a harbinger of sorrow, as a knower of flaw and error, and this in a past tense that is being renewed as a world language, and from its renewal it announces its loss. But what is the nature of the message and what is unique about this Brenner - whose literature is written as an expression of loss, the lamented Brenner - the author demands in many midrashims from world and Hebrew literature; From the myth of the melancholic Saturn, from the teachings of Hippocrates, from Aristotle's mistakes, from the poets of the Psalms, from Robert Burton's letters, from Walter Benjamin's theory of the Toga play, from Freud's pathologies and many others. All of these merge when reading Brenner's works: "In Winter", "Around the Point", "Nerves", "From Here and Here" and "Bereavement and Failure"; They lead to the laggards, the spirits of the past restrained by the power of the text, which work in it and even activate it, as words of poetry, poetry of nerves - the lament of the new Hebrew literature.' -- from the back cover. -- online translation

"From antiquity to the 16th century, translation united culturally the peoples in the historical West (from Bactria to the shores of the Atlantic) and fueled the production and circulation of knowledge. The Hellenic scientific and philosophical curriculum was translated from and into, to mention the most prevalent languages, Greek, Syriac, Middle Persian, Arabic, Hebrew, and Latin. To fill a lack in existing scholarship, this volume collects the documents that present the insider evidence provided in contemporary accounts of the motivations and purposes of translation given in the personal statements by the agents in this process, the translators, scholars, and historians of each society. Presented in the original languages with an English translation and introductory essays, these documents offer material for the study of the historical contextualization of the translations, the social history of science and philosophy in their interplay with traditional beliefs, and the cultural policies and ideological underpinnings of these societies"--
