    Turniere prägen nicht nur moderne Klischees über das Mittelalter, sondern waren mindestens bis ins 16. Jahrhundert, mancherorts auch noch später, sportliche Großereignisse, an denen Adelige und Angehörige der städtischen Oberschicht teilnahmen. Oft veranstaltete man solche Wettkämpfe anlässlich von Feierlichkeiten, Hochzeiten oder als Fastnachtsvergnügen. Sie setzten Zuschauermassen in Bewegung und zogen hochspezialisierte Bewaffnung, ausgefeilte Regeln und prächtige Ausschmückung nach sich. Der Band enthält die Beiträge einer gemeinsam vom Bayerischen Nationalmuseum und vom Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in München veranstalteten Tagung sowie weitere Texte zu Turnierdarstellungen und verschiedenen Aspekten der mit dem Turnierwesen zusammenhängenden Festkultur. Vorgestellt werden nicht nur neue waffenkundliche, sondern auch kultur- und kunsthistorische Themen aus dem Kontext des Turnierwesens, wie die Rolle der Frau oder die Zeugnisse der Rezeption fremder Kulturen.
