This study undertakes a political reading of the ʿIqd al-farīd by Ibn ʿAbd Rabbih (246/860-328/940). It proposes to identify this adab encyclopaedia, composed in Cordova as a “caliphal” composition, by interpreting its conceptual agenda and compositional structure against the background of (neo-) Umayyad caliphal ideology as reconstructed by Janina Safran and Gabriel Martinez-Gros. It reads the text as “imperialistic” in its claim to represent Umayyad leadership, as unique and universal, against that of its contemporary rivals, the Abbasids and Fatimids. The Umayyads in al-Andalus suffered from a peculiarly precarious legitimacy, since, in contrast to the Abbasids and Fatimids, they could not refer to a kinship link to the Prophet. Their territory was also situated far outside the central lands of Islam and did not dominate the Holy Sites in the Ḥijāz (required for a caliph),which was a source of embarrassment. Therefore, there was a particularly strong need for a consistent ideology to compensate for this ...

alīla and Dimna was translated from Pahlavi into Arabic in the 8th century AD by Ibn al-Muqaffaʿ, and it became an influential text in numerous literary cultures. Copyists in the Arabic manuscript tradition acted as coauthors, changing the text in ways both large and small. The modern scholarly tradition tends to see Kalīla and Dimna as part of a Fürstenspiegel genre or as an example of animal fables. What these categorizations overlook is the variegated medieval reception of the text, which was more multifaceted than is generally appreciated. The unruliness of the text's reception is the theme of this article, which explores the ways in which medieval readers categorized and reinterpreted Kalīla and Dimna over centuries, with special attention to Ibn al-Habbāriyya's late 11th-century dramatization of the divergent interpretations of Kalīla and Dimna. The article reveals that the interpreters of this text reconfigured its generic affiliation, making it a Quranic competitor, a repository of proverbs, an ...

The Abbasid-era textual tradition is full of animals. The variety and range of narratives about animals are brought together here in this special issue. Although Kalīla wa-Dimna is certainly the most famous work to feature talking animals and fictive humans, it is by no means the only one. This special issue of the Journal of Abbasid Studies looks beyond Kalīla wa-Dimna by bringing together articles engaging with this broader tradition of putting animals to work in Arabic texts and, quite often, giving them the ability to talk. These papers are the first fruits of a 2019 workshop at the Freie Universität Berlin entitled Animals, Adab, and Fictivity, organized by Beatrice Gruendler and myself under the auspices of Beatrice Gruendler's ERC project entitled AnonymClassic. ...
