    Bekannt ist Max Frischs Wort von der „durchschlagenden Wirkungslosigkeit“ des zum „Klassiker“ avancierten Brecht; inzwischen sind „Der gute Mensch von Sezuan“ und „Leben des Galilei“ sogar zur Pflichtlektüre im Deutschunterricht erhoben worden. Brechts Werk ist in den Literatur- und Bildungsbetrieb gerade der kapitalistischen Gesellschaft integriert worden, gegen die er seine Arbeit gerichtet hatte. Die „Heilige Johanna der Schlachthöfe“ allerdings scheint sich solcher Eingemeindung noch am ehesten zu widersetzen. Nicht umsonst hatten die wenigen Rezensionen von 1932/33 die Gesellschaftskritik des Stückes herausgestrichen und – je nach Standort – mit Einverständnis oder wütender Abwehr auf die Angriffe gegen Religion und Klassik reagiert.1 Doch der Schein trügt. Bei der Lektüre von 120 Rezensionen zu 14 „Johanna“-Aufführungen zwischen 1959 und 1971 fand ich weitgehend genau die wohlwollende Unbetroffenheit, die Frisch mit seinem Diktum beschreibt. Mehr noch: Brecht zeigte sich nicht nur wirkungslos, sondern im Wortsinn als Klassiker interpretiert. Hinter den Fehlurteilen der Rezensenten wurden die Umrisse eben jenes Kunstbegriffs sichtbar, den Literaturwissenschaft und Publizistik nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg an der Interpretation der klassischen Werke der bürgerlichen Tradition entwickelt hatten (und dessen Fragwürdigkeit nicht nur mir im Kontext der Studentenbewegung gerade an Brecht bewusst geworden war).

    Brecht hatte in der "Heiligen Johanna", expliziter als in seinen späteren Werken, genau diesen bildungsbürgerlichen Kunstbegriff zu destruieren unternommen, den seine Rezensenten zur Beurteilung seines Werkes anwandten. Die Diskrepanz zwischen der Ideologie der Rezipienten und der tatsächlichen Gestalt dessen, was sie zu rezipieren meinten, erhält dadurch noch eine zusätzliche Dimension. Was bei Brecht, als Ideologie, einen definierten Platz innerhalb der kapitalistischen Gesellschaft hat, die das Stück beschreibt, erhebt sich wieder zum Urteil über das Ganze, des Stückes wie der dargestellten Wirklichkeit.

    Die Rezeption der "Johanna" und Brechts wirkliche "Heilige Johanna der Schlachthöfe": das ist ein Lehrstück über die erstaunliche Fähigkeit bürgerlicher Ideologie, die eigene Partialität als Totalität zu setzen. Von der gleichen Fähigkeit handelt auch Brechts Drama. Von ihr, in eben dieser Doppelung, werde ich im folgenden sprechen

Klassen); Lehrlinge, junge Facharbeiter und Angestellte aus verschiedenen Bereichen sowie Studenten mehrerer Hochschulen befragt. Dabei ging es (1) "um Freizeitinteressen und Verhaltensweisen Jugendlicher in der Freizeit; (2) um das Interesse Jugendlicher an verschiedenen Kunstgattungen (Literatur; Theater; Spielfilm; Musik), ihre Verhaltensweisen dazu und um ihre kulturelle und künstlerische Selbstbetätigung; (3) um Zusammenhänge zwischen den verschiedenen künstlerischen Interessen und Verhaltensweisen; (4) um objektive und subjektive Einflüsse auf die kulturell-künstlerischen Interessen und Verhaltensweisen".
