    Besondere Situationen bestimmen den Lebensweg der Menschen bei Kleist. Michael Kohlhaas gelangt vor einen Schlagbaum, der ihn zwingt, von der geraden Straße nach Sachsen abzuweichen; Jeronimo Rugera gerät in ein Erdbeben, das ihn hindert, den geplanten Selbstmord zu begehen. Vergleichbares geschieht auch den Brüdern zu Beginn der Novelle „Die Heilige Cäcilie …“ in Aachen:

    Nach Verlauf einiger Tage … traf es sich, daß von den Nonnen im Kloster der Heiligen Cäcilie,
    das damals vor den Toren dieser Stadt lag, der Fronleichnamstag festlich begangen werden
    sollte; dergestalt, daß die vier Brüder … beschlossen, auch der Stadt Aachen das Schauspiel
    einer Bildstürmerei zu geben [1].

    Unvermutet befinden sich diese Menschen in einer „Situation“: ein unerwartetes Ereignis tritt in ihr Leben, zufällig „traf es sich“ so, - nun bedingt es ihr Handeln und gestaltet ihr Schicksal. Von „Schwärmerei, Jugend und dem Beispiel der Niederländer“ mögen sie hinreichend „erhitzt“ [2] worden sein, um derart gewaltsam zu Werke zu gehen, - doch daß sie überhaupt einen „Beschluß“ fassen, folgt nicht aus ihrem seelischen Zustand, sondern wird vom zufällig einfallenden Feiertag bewirkt. Ein Zufall hat Gewalt über ihren Willen erhalten.

    Nun ist es kaum außergewöhnlich, bei einem Dramatiker wie Kleist und im Verlauf von Novellen auf "unerhörte" Situationen zu stoßen [3], in denen Menschen mit einer ihnen feindlichen Umwelt aneinander geraten und Zufälle schicksalhafte Bedeutung gewinnen. Kleist erfüllt damit überindividuelle Gesetze und hält sich im Rahmen der "Gattung Novelle" insofern, als er bestimmte Gestaltungsprinzipien aufgreift, die ihm die Tradition der europäischen Novellistik anbietet [4]. Doch häuft und steigert er die Situationen über die bisherigen Formen der Novellentradition hinaus, so daß "Situation" und "Zufall" für seine eigene Dichtung zum Zentralproblem werden und ihren "Elementarhorizont" [5] festlegen. Niemand wird etwa Boccacios "Decame- l rone", "Cervantes' "Novelas Ejemplares" oder Goethes "Unterhaltungen deutscher Ausgewanderten" interpretieren wollen, ohne Rücksicht auf ihre vielfältigen Situationen und seltsamen Zufälle zu nehmen; aber Situationen und Zufälle sind bei ihnen jeweils in ein Geflecht lebendiger gesellschaftlicher oder religiös-moralischer Kräfte eingeknüpft und werden vom jeweiligen "Rahmen" ihrer Novellenzyklen begrenzt und relativiert [6]. Kleists Novellistik aber kennt keinen Rahmen. Bei ihm haben sich die Elemente emanzipiert und sich gleichsam bis an den Rand seiner Novellen ausgedehnt, alles andere aus ihnen verdrängend. Es ist zu fragen, zu welcher Gestalt sie sich dabei entwickelten und was ihre Verabsolutierung für die Novellen bedeutet
