This is the first book in English to offer an extensive introduction to the Tongmunsŏn (Selections of Refined Literature of Korea)—the largest and most important Korean literary collection created prior to the twentieth century—as well as translations of essays from key chapters. The Tongmunsŏn was compiled in 1478 by Sŏ Kŏjŏng (1420-1488) and other Chosŏn literati at the command of King Sŏngjong (r. 1469–1494). It was modeled after the celebrated Chinese anthology Wen Xuan and contains poetry and prose in an extensive array of styles and genres. The Translators’ Introduction begins by describing the general structure of the Tongmunsŏn and contextualizes literary output in Korea within the great sweep of East Asian literature from the eighth to the fifteenth centuries. The entire Tongmunsŏn as well as all of the essays selected for translation were written in hanmun (as opposed to Korean vernacular), which points to a close literary connection between the continent and the peninsula. The Introduction goes on to discuss the genres contained in the Tongmunsŏn and examines style as revealed through prosody. The translation of two of these genres (treatises and discourses) in four books of the Tongmunsŏn showcases prose-writing and the intellectual concerns of the age. Through their discussions of morality, nature, and the fantastic, we see Daoist, Buddhist, and Confucian themes at work in essays by some of Korea’s most distinguished writers, among them Yi Kyubo, Yi Saek, Yi Chehyŏn, and Chŏng Tojŏn. The translations also include annotations and extensive cross-references to classical allusions in the Chinese canon, making the present volume an essential addition to any East Asian literature collection Frontmatter -- Contents -- Acknowledgments -- Note on the Translation -- I. Translators’ Introduction -- Translators’ Introduction -- II. Translation Selections from the Tongmunsŏn: Discourses and Treatises -- Selections from the Tongmunsŏn: Discourses and Treatises -- Notes -- Bibliography -- Glossary-Index

This historical anthology of Korean poetry, ancient, medieval, and premodern Korean songs and poems highlights the evolution of poetic composition in the vernacular. The book is a manifesto of the uniquely Korean poetic tradition, which flourished quite separately along with the literary tradition retained by the men of letters devoted to the scholarship in classical Chinese. The beauty of the Korean language and the tradition of verse-making in it are sumptuously demonstrated by this book, which contains both the original texts in the unique Korean orthography of phonograms and the translator's English version that runs in parallel with the original poems.

This is the first English translation of selected poems by one of the most important and unusual modern poets of South Korea. In contrast to the strident political protests found in the poetry of many of his contemporaries, Pak Chaesam's work is characterized by intimate portraits of place, nature, childhood, and human relationships, and by indirection, nostalgia, and reflectiveness. Often focused upon the border of this world and some other, Pak writes with a spareness of presentation but a cornucopia of imagery, meticulously exploring objective and subjective realms of existence and memory. Encouraging the reader to see and listen, and to allow the sensory to reshape the analytical, Pak's poetry opens up new realms of experience. A fellow Korean poet described Pak's poetry as being "the most exquisite expression of the Korean sense of han," or melancholy

학위논문(석사)--서울대학교 대학원 :인문대학 국어국문학과,2019. 8. 김종욱. ; This study proposes that the concept of genius plays an important role in Yi Kwang-su's early literary activities. Yi Kwang-su's early literary activities, including What is the literature (『문학이란하오』) and Mu-jeong(『무정』), have been attracting the attention of researchers as one of the sources of modern Korean literature. Studies focusing on the feature of Korean modern literature sought to evaluate Yi Kwang-su's literary activities in terms of the discovery of individual and modern literature. However, there is a problem to consider Yi Kwang-su's literature as just a transplant from the West through Japan. In this perspective, it is at the core of the evaluation that how faithful the transplant was made. Since the late 2000s, researches have focused on Yi Kwang-su's literary tradition. These studies have contributed to a new understanding of Yi Kwang-su's literature by discovering korean and chinese literary traditions inherent in his works. In this way, Yi Kwang-su's literary activities reveal the interaction of the old and new, and the intercourse with the intellectuals of the time. They presented an ideal human in the context of the contemporary period. Ideal humans in that era were called by various names such as heroes, geniuses, and writers(문사). This study focuses on Yi Kwang-su's concept of genius, which characterizes Yi Kwang-su's early literature. Although the expression genius" itself had been used in the Chinese text, it acquired modern meaning by the genius discourse of the 18th century, to define the genius as a person with special qualities. Kant defines genius as the owner of originality that invented a new rule which was never before. Thomas Carlyle used the concept of genius as an expression to describe the hero, explaining the heroes in history. He found the essence of originality being sincerity. Carlyle defined sincerity as a way in which a spirit is linked to a transcendent world and an attitude in which believes and practices it with a true heart. Carlyle's sincerity was in the domain of authenticity, especially in that it means a true belief and a measure of value. Carlyle's discussion of heroism, genius, and sincerity began to be accepted in East Asia at the end of the 19th century. East Asian intellectuals of that time were generally equipped with Chinese literary skills. Therefore, the acceptance of Carlyle's was also translated through translingual practice through 漢文脈. In this process, sincerity was associated with the concept of 赤誠 or 至誠, which means supreme Chéng(誠). In Chapter 2, the context of Heroism in the 1900s and the characteristics of Yi Kwang - su 's genius concept are tracked. In 1880s, the discussion about heroes was widely accepted among Korean intellectuals through Liang Qi-chao since when beginning accepting Thomas Carlyle's "heroism" in Japan in the 1880s. Korean students in Japan also participated in these movements, and these movements were reflected in magazines such as "Tae-geuk-hak-bo"(『太極學報』), "Dae-han-heung-hak-bo"(『大韓興學報』) and "So-nyeon"(『少年』) published by them. The heroism discussed in these magazines urged the development and cultivation of individuals who constitute the community rather than the worship of specific characters. At this time, the individual was not an independent entity but constituents of the state, which achieves self-realization in the relation of the state. Yi Kwang-su began his literary activities in the context of the contemporary intellectuals that emphasized heroism and the individual in the community. However, he pointed out the 'genius' that was used as a hero 's predicament in Carlyle's heroism and began to use it as the core of his discussion. He took care differences of the talents in each person and individual loneliness of the ideal person. In his early literary activities, the belief in the mental qualities and the influence of the ideal person was maintained, but the ideal person he described was no longer a 'hero' who achieved great works. In Chapter 3, the discussion begins with how the influence of the genius combined with the novel genre. The ideal human presented at that time, whether a hero or a genius, was dealt with in the sense that he could inspire others to become heroes themselves. This premise led to the anxieties about the forms that show how characters were created in the works as well as characters in novels. Shin Chae-ho and other contemporaries noted that the influence of the novel based on the real, and they paid attention to Sa-sil-so-seol(寫實小說, novels describing real events). In this context, Jang Eung-jin and Hyun Sang-yoon published works titled Sa-sil-so-seol around 1910. Yi Kwang-su also followed this trend. But in the daily newspaper "Mae-il-sin-bo"(《每日新報》), he pursued reality in a way that matches real and fictional events rather than replicating the events. The protagonists of Yi Kwang - su 's novels were initially presented as heroes achieving great tasks at first, but later changed to genius with possibilities. The protagonists raise the issue of sincerity. In chapter 4, the changes in the 1920s' works are analyzed after the asylum due to the 2 · 8 Declaration of Independence. The protagonists of Yi Kwang-su's were the agents specialized in each field. However, in the 1920s Yi Kwang-su's novels, talents are excluded because they were regarded as causes of corruption. In 1920s Yi Kwang-su became more inclined to emphasize mental qualities. Antagonists succumbed to pleasures provided by his talents, while the protagonists refused pleasures by giving up using his talents, to secure the moral position. These changes were influenced by the discourse that regarded genius as a symbol of decadence, the rise of skepticism caused by the frustration of the 3·1 Independence Movement and the division of the Korean interim government. Although the concept of genius chaged, the firm belief about spiritualism derived from the generation of heroism stayed in his literature.

학위논문(석사)--서울대학교 대학원 :사범대학 국어교육과(국어교육전공),2019. 8. 김종철. ; In this study, the identity patterns of adolescent protagonists in young adult novels are analyzed by focusing on the specific growth narrative containing an adolescent identity that resembles that of contemporary adolescents. The purpose of this thesis is to explore the contents of education that triggers positive identity formation in adolescence. Specifically, the identity formation narrative in young adult novels, identity crises of contemporary adolescents, and positive identity as the ultimate goal of identity formation are analyzed in this study. This thesis defines the young adult novel, a genre mainly projecting adolescent readers, as a novel that describes the experiences of adolescents from the adolescent protagonist's perspective. Therefore, the content of the young adult novel includes adolescents' experiences from the perspective of the adolescent protagonist. Regarding content, the young adult novel shows how an identity crisis in adolescence proceeds to social suture through the identity formation process. Regarding form, the identity formation process of the adolescent protagonist is represented by the relationship between the protagonist and opponents or assistants. In addition, identity is a unique characteristic of the individual that is also related to one's response to the environment. Individuals form their identities by organizing their own experiences at the psychosocial level. Therefore, to understand identity among contemporary adolescents, it is necessary to analyze their psychosocial level and the way they organize their experiences. At this level, adolescents have developmental tasks, including adapting to their own characteristics (e.g., maturity of their bodies), developing value orientations that are independent from those of the older generation, and planning their careers according to their value orientations and future realities. The study on the self–perceptions of high school students indicated that adolescents were experiencing negative self-consciousness, the loss of initiative by the older generation, and helplessness resulting from academic stress. This article includes a proposed theoretical framework for Erik Erikson's view of identity for analyzing adolescent identity crises. The three categories of issues that constitute the identity of an adolescent are the issue of self-consciousness," the "issue of intergenerational initiative," and the "issue of career planning." These categories form the basis for classifications of identity formation patterns in young adult novels (Chapter III). Meta–analyses of biographies of Gandhi and Luther reconstructed by Erikson are included in this study, and the ego-expansion experience that forms positive identity—including self–transcendence, consciousness of generation succession, and an understanding of the relationship between the world and the ego—is developed. A finding of the study is that ego-expansion is embedded in the positive identity of the adolescent protagonist presented at the end of the young adult novel. In Chapter III, the patterns of identity formation among adolescent protagonists in nine young adult novels are analyzed, based on the characteristics of the identity formation narrative and the structure of identity formation in adolescence. Section 1 explores the development and constitution of the identity formation narrative, inferring the characteristics of each narrative according to three identity issues. The issue of self-consciousness deepens into an issue-oriented conflict, and it is resolved with the narrative connection between the narrative of self-consciousness and the narrative of other-consciousness. The issue of intergenerational initiative deepens into a balance-destructive conflict, and it is resolved with the embedded narrative of the life history of the opponent, a member of the older generation. The adolescent protagonist comes to understand the opponent and embraces him/her. The issue of career planning deepens into a structure-oriented conflict that questions the exclusiveness of contemporary society. Therefore, the narrative of the career plan extends to insight regarding social structure and intersects with the narrative depicting an alternative society. Thus, this study analyzes the aspects of identity formation in young adult novels based on characteristics of identity categories extracted from the development and constitution of the narrative. Characteristics of adolescent protagonists, opponents, and assistants are also examined in this thesis. According to the analysis, the adolescent protagonist has psychological characteristics related to desires of the self. Based on the definition of an identity crisis as a conflict between inner desires, the adolescent protagonist's psychology during an identity crisis were investigated. One protagonist experiencing a crisis of self–consciousness displayed avoidance
