    Née dans sa forme moderne au seuil du XIXe siècle, en pleine période d'affirmation des états-nations européens, l'histoire littéraire peut aujourd'hui sembler dépassée, ne serait-ce qu'en raison de ses présupposés patrimoniaux et de sa mise au service d'une identité essentiellement nationale. En tant que monuments des littératures dites "nationales", les différentes histoires littéraires qui ont pendant de longues années marqué l'enseignement supérieur de la littérature, en Europe et ailleurs, paraissent aujourd'hui mal équipées pour rendre compte de la production littéraire dans une perspective que l'on pourra qualifier de comparatiste, de mondiale, ou encore de transnationale. Faut-il par conséquent désormais renoncer à faire de l'histoire littéraire? Sous quelle(s) forme(s) l'histoire littéraire est-elle encore possible?

    Dieser Beitrag geht von einer kritischen Bestandsaufnahme der Geschichtsschreibung der europäischen Literatur(en), dann von der Beobachtung des charakteristischen Verfahrens der Überbewertung eines "goldenen Zeitalters" in den nationalen Literaturgeschichten aus. Dabei wird der Versuch der Skizzierung einer gemeinsamen deutsch-französischen romantischen "Makroepoche" unternommen. Abgegrenzt durch die zwangsläufig allgemeinen chronologischen Markierungen 1750 und 1850, fördert das Beispiel einer deutsch-französischen Romantik den Ansatz einer auf die Literaturgeschichte angewandten Methode des Kulturtransfers, die sich Europa und der Welt öffnet. Diese Anschauung einer verflochtenen Literaturgeschichtsschreibung erweist sich als komplementär zu den bestehenden nationalen Literaturgeschichten, ohne ihnen grundsätzlich zu widersprechen, solange das Prinzip angenommen wird, eine gewisse Aufsplitterung der nationalen Epochen in Frage zu stellen, dies im Sinne einer Anpassungsfähigkeit, die für eine supranationale Konzeption der Literaturgeschichte als Voraussetzung gilt.

    Dans cet article, j'expose mon projet de "cheminement dans l'espace littéraire bulgare". La notion d'espace littéraire bulgare permet de déplacer le regard de la perspective "occidentalo-centrée" à l'oeuvre dans les histoires littéraires écrites en Bulgarie, de déconnecter la littérature de la perspective national(ist)e encore dominante en mettant au jour tout ce que la "fabrique du national" a occulté: circulation des hommes, des idées et des textes, multilinguisme d'écriture, feuilletage des identités, mais aussi de penser autrement les "horloges littéraires" du monde en cartographiant sur la longue durée l'échange de formes et de textes. Celle de cheminement suggère les mutations, les croisements: prolongeant Denis Hollier ("De la littérature française", 1991), je me propose de remplacer le "grand récit" linéaire par des essais introduits par une date-agrafe et présentés chronologiquement tout en créant du discontinu, du mouvement, des passages.

    Continuing a long-lasting reflection on the ways in which the history of Romanian literature has been narrated, starting with the 20th century, and on the difficulties of nowadays literary history to metabolize the violent history of communism from which Romania broke away more than 30 years ago, the present study focuses on some examples which should signal essential paradigm changes: the history of national literature (a major narrative of Romanian modernity, dominant in the field of literary disciplines) seems to be replaced by a discourse that claims to be based on concepts such as "world literature" or "transnational literature". These are, indisputably, fashionable concepts today - but are the most recent studies of the history of Romanian literature really built on them? Are we witnessing a paradigm shift in the study of literary history? And - if that's the case - where does this radical change start? And what chance does it have when it comes to contemporary literature - and to the literature of the future? Without offering definitive answers, we aim to discuss a few significant examples, pointing towards the "difficulty" of building such a new historical narrative against a national background.

    Based on a case-study of the International Committee on Intellectual Cooperation (Geneva, 1922-1946) and the International Institute of Intellectual Cooperation (Paris, 1924-1946), working for the League of Nations, this article aims at underlining the importance of international institutions for the conception and dissemination of world literature on a global scale. First, it shows how these institutions attempted to regulate literature through international standards, conferences and literary collections. Then, it argues that these regulations have the effect of questioning and pluralizing the definitions and uses of literature. Finally, it calls for a greater consideration of institutional archives in the writing of world literature and literary history, for they allow us to renew our narratives.

    This article analyses the construction of French-speaking literary history in the global arena. Referring to historiographical methods, it attempts to question the relevance of periodization based on political history. In particular, the European colonization allows us to qualify these literatures as "postcolonial" and to select from them what belongs to modernity in the European sense of the term. While an analysis of this approach highlights the coherence of this corpus produced in the same French language, it also shows its limits as it ignores productions in local languages, long-term particular stories and relationships to traditions. A number of suggestions are made with the view of writing a French-speaking literary history that is both more inclusive and more integrated in the global context.

    Rethinking the history of literature implies considering this field of studies as a source of narrations (Wellek, Ceserani) and ideological discourses (Asor Rosa) on literature in general and, more precisely, on national literatures. It is from this perspective, that this paper aims to analyze the specific case of Swiss Italian literature and of the very few (and nowadays out-of-date) works narrating the history of this particular literary region, mainly those of Guido Calgari and Giovanni Orelli. The purpose of this analysis, that considers textual and paratextual elements of their works, is to underline the fundamental ambiguity of both their discourses and their readings of the relation between Swiss Italian literature and Italian literature. If on the one hand, their works - that are still a reference tool for those who want to discover this little-known universe - aspire to enhance the value and notoriety of this "minor" literature, on the other hand, by reinstating its dependence from, or belonging to, Italian literature, they inevitably end up marginalizing this unique literature whose history demands, and deserves, to be rethought and recounted differently.

    This article answers the question of the conference: Is literary historiography still contemporary in the face of global and transnational developments, given that since the late 18th century it has been oriented toward the monuments of national literature in the forming nation-states. Nevertheless, literary histories as special histories seem possible if they want to escape the pitfalls of national narratives on the one hand and the arbitrariness of multicultural diversifications through the orientation towards global developments on the other hand. What is proposed is an intercultural history of literature that focuses on the specifics of communication in individual countries, compares these specifics, and shows the extent to which literature reflects them.

    The notion of polygraphy is little used in the literary field. It is often perceived as a pejorative qualification: the polygraph is a writer who dissipates himself between several genres, who cannot concentrate on the essential, on what he can do best. In reality, the situation is quite different. It is the critics who tend to reduce authors to one part of their activity: Alexandre Dumas to the historical novel, or Simenon to writing crime novels. The article looks at three examples: the writer-journalist Charles Monselet in the nineteenth century, the media reporter and best-selling author Joseph Kessel in the first half of the twentieth century, and the contemporary writer, art critic and scriptwriter Caroline Lamarche. Each of these authors has put into circulation a wide variety of texts, some of which have been classified as literary. It is by recognising this polygraphy that we can analyse their literary careers.

    This article charts a new path for understanding the relationship between French and other languages in Joachim Du Bellay's early publications, "La Deffence, et illustration de la langue françoyse" and "L'Olive" (both published in 1549). While Du Bellay seems to present ancient Greek, Latin and Italian exclusively as source languages that can be used to enrich the French vernacular and to turn it into a worthy competitor, I suggest that the edition as a whole paints a more nuanced picture. The prefatory poems written by Jean Dorat in ancient Greek and Latin, respectively, suggest that these languages are not only sources and implicit rivals but also companions that are instrumental in the "defense and illustration" of the French language.
