The book explores the portrait in Modernist literature by focusing on the novels The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man by James Joyce and Doña Inés (a love story) by José Martínez Ruiz - Azorín. In order to put the theme in the necessary cultural, historical and theoretical perspective, the first two chapters are dedicated to the autonomous pictorial portrait and to different types of portraits in literature. The remaining three chapters offer a close reading of the three chosen literary works from the point of view of the portrait: the diverse manifestations of the portrait are registered, their functions are pointed out and analysed, the relationships existing between them are established, and, finally, the problems that the portraits pose are determined. As a result, the comparative analysis of the novels of Wilde, Joyce and Azorín outlines their common commitment to the representation of a contradictory, constantly developing and self-reflexive human individual. The three protagonists reject the authorities, value their individual freedom highly and perceive their identity as subject to their past. By revealing the capacity of the portrait to expound the issues pointed out above, the research deems it an adequate embodiment of Modernist worldview. The present book is a revised version of a PhD thesis defended at Sofia University in 2012.

Multilingualism, in principle and in function, has been codified in various legal instruments, in particular by the first regulation adopted by the EEC, Regulation 1/58, which remains in force today. However, like democracy, its preservation depends on a constant endeavour to explain it within the context of a long-term perspective. Multilingualism is regularly called into question on the pretext of speed and economy, as though it were more of a constraint than an aspect our shared wealth. At the Court of Justice of the European Union, multilingualism takes on a particular importance, as it determines, at the outset, how the procedures are conducted and, at a later stage, ensures that the case-law is accessible to everyone in their own language. However, legitimate requirements of efficiency and cost control remain crucial, with the result that there is constant reflection and the latest technologies are used to the fullest in order always to provide the citizen with an optimal service. This book sets out the historical, legal and political factors that have led to the emergence of strong institutional multilingualism as an instrument of equality, inclusion and progress. It describes the language regime of the institution and the manner in which multilingualism is practised there, in particular by the interpretation and legal translation services. It reflects on the points of view and arguments that are regularly raised in the press and in academic legal writing, and it proposes, on the basis of objective analyses, a strong and optimistic vision looking resolutely towards the future.

To the history of Bulgarian satire from the second half of the 20th c. This is a significant research dedicated to our literary history and satire, the fruit of many years of effort. The study of the work of Radoj Ralin, Emil Manov, Ivan Radoev, Konstantin Pavlov, Stanislav Stratiev and Boris Hristov hardly has an analogue in our contemporary literary studies. Combining psychological, sociological, historical, hermeneutic and other approaches, the researcher conscientiously and dedicatedly presents some of the most profound and at the same time the most accessible pages written on these iconic writers, and at the same time on some of the most painful problems of our society

In his latest study “The Energy of the Bulgarian Spirit”, Ivan Granitski traces the evolution of the national feeling in the Bulgarian literature, analyzes it and interprets it in the work of various Bulgarian poets and novelists. The national spirit is something specific and unique, because it is presented artistically by our greatest authors, who are expression of both the entire nation and certain regions, social groups, ages, intellectual classes. In his book, Ivan Granitski traces these peculiarities and analyzes them thoroughly in order to draw his original conclusions about the essence of the literary process in modern Bulgarian literature.
