"This book lists all the similes in the Bible in three different versions (Greek, Latin and English), noting especially the variation in the use of introductory words (protheses). There are over 1000 examples, not counting the predicate and genitive versions, a significant collection. The Introduction discusses the parts and types of similes as well as other similar figures of speech (e.g., analogies, comparisons and metaphors); examples are provided of prothetic (prothesis expressed: he runs like a panther) and non-prothetic types (prothesis implied: he is [like] a lion in savagery). The Conclusion points out various aspects of Biblical usage, some differing from those in classical Greek authors (Homer and Plato). The importance of similes in clarifying difficult concepts while adding grace to the narrative accounts for their popularity in philosophical and religious writers"--

"M. Porcius Cato (234-149 BC), one of the best-known figures of the middle Roman Republic, remains legendary for his political and military career, especially his staunch opposition to Carthage; his modest way of life; his integrity of character and austere morality; his literary works, composed in a style at once sophisticated and down-to-earth; his pithy sayings; and his drive to define and to champion Roman national character and traditions in the face of challenges from Greek culture. Cato's legend derived to no small degree from his own distinctive and compelling self-presentation, which established a model later developed and elaborated by Cicero and by subsequent literary and historical authors for centuries to come. This volume along with LCL 551 join the Loeb edition of Cato's only extant work, On Agriculture (LCL 283), by supplying all testimonia about, and all fragments by or attributed to Cato. Highlights of this volume are Cato's orations, regarded as the beginning of Roman oratory; To His Son Marcus, which inaugurated a Roman tradition of didactic pieces addressed by fathers to their sons; Military Matters; the Poem on Morals; letters; commentaries on civil law; and memorable sayings"

"This study traces the textual history of the Old Latin, or Vetus Latina, version of the Book of Daniel and its additions (Sus-Dn-Bel), from the turn of the third century in North Africa to 360 AD. The work focuses on the patristic evidence, dedicating a chapter to each of the following: Tertullian, the Adversus Iudaeos attributed to him, Cyprian of Carthage, minor witnesses to Dn, and Lucifer of Cagliari in Sardinia, Italy. The fragmentary manuscript evidence and other Fathers' citations are treated in relation to the Fathers just listed. Each chapter includes a text-critical analysis complemented by a linguistic one.The work begins with Tertullian's citations, which he probably translated ad hoc from a Greek text closer to the Septuagintal version than the Theodotionic one. At least the first half of the Adversus Iudaeos is contemporary to Tertullian; however, for the most part, this work cites Dn according to the Theodotionic text. It bears similarities to citations of the next period, especially the Pseudo-Cyprianic De pascha computus. By Cyprian's time, Theodotionic readings have further encroached upon the Septuagintal version. The Cyprianic citations attest modest affinity with other witnesses, including Lucifer. Between these two Fathers lies the brief chapter on minor witnesses. Finally, Lucifer's citations imply a Vorlage thoroughly within the Theodotionic stream of transmission. His agreements with Latin authors from a wide geographical range suggest a common textual history, namely, that of a North African translation that underwent subsequent revisions as it spread. From Tertullian to Lucifer, the Theodotionic Greek manuscript group headed by Codex Marchalianus (Q) is the one that most consistently shares variant readings with Old Latin Sus-Dn-Bel. Within this entire span of Latin citations, one encounters remarkable linguistic characteristics, some mor phological, many lexical, and still others syntactical." --
