The book of Kalīla wa-Dimna has been apprehended in variegated ways: as an originally Indian book, one of the first Arabic adab works, as a mirror for princes and a collection of fables. In spite of varying construals of Kalīla wa-Dimna, until recently there is one shared denominator among modern textual scholarship: it is a fictional narrative. Although such interpretation seems intuitive to a modern reader, it is questionable when taking a historical perspective. Since there is no precise equivalent of "fictionality" in the classical context, the concept can neither be naturally assumed, nor be approached as a single unitary notion that we have to simply translate and then seek to find by identifying “signals” or “signposts” of fiction/fictionality. Building upon approaches that attempt to reconstruct premodern modes of understanding and using textual production, in this article, I suggests to conceptualize fictionality as a hermeneutical category which encompasses different perspectives of what about and ...

Peace dealings in Early Modern times resembled more business transactions than anything else, peopled by actors being influenced by their country's specific circumstances or sometimes by chance alone. The danger of misunderstandings, whether precipitated through false translations or false interpretations, was imminent in all such proccedings. But ignorance too played an active role in both the political and legal background of Early Modern times. This collection of articles is concerned with both the temporal and the thematic contexts of the phenomena of "misunderstanding" and "ignorance." It provides many insights into the architecture of premodern communication.

We know that history can be affected - and effected - by language and translations, a primary example being Luther´s translation of the Bible into German. Even the political processes of very complex modern societies are controlled by language processes, including deficiencies and communication misunderstandings. But how was the striving for peace transmitted between the various dynasties and societies in Europe? What was the political and cultural role of language in making and preserving peace? A number of individual studies have addressed the diplomatic methods and strategies of the premodern era, but they did not systematically treat the communicative dimension of peace negotiations of early modern times. The contributions in this edited volume are concerned with this complex question and touch on many individual aspects as well.

What makes up a public, what governs dominant discourses, and in which ways can counterpublics be created through narrative? This edited collection brings together essays on affect and narrative theory with a focus on the topics of gender and sexuality. It explores the power of narrative in literature, film, art, performance, and mass media, the construction of subjectivities of gender and sexuality, and the role of affect in times of crisis. By combining theoretical, literary, and analytical texts, the contributors offer methodological impulses and reflect on the possibilities and limitations of affect theory in cultural studies.

; Contemporary culture is characterised by a peculiar desire for crime narratives. Novels, non-fiction books, films, TV series or podcasts that deal with real or fictional murders, acts of fraud or spectacular thefts attract a wide audience and often become the object of public fascination. The contributions to this volume trace this hunger for crime stories and evaluate both the aesthetic and ethical significance of them having become one of today's leading narrative genres.

This book explores the relationship between ekphrasis and memory in the novel. Drawing on À la recherche du temps perdu, Leonid Bilmes considers how Vladimir Nabokov, W. G. Sebald, Ben Lerner, Ali Smith and Lydia Davis have employed and reshaped Proust's way of depicting the recollected past. In Ada, Austerlitz, 10:04, How to Be Both and The End of the Story, memory images are variously transposed into intermedial descriptions that inform the narrator's story, just as they serve to shape the reader's own remembrance of each of these narratives. Ekphrasis in the novel after Proust, Bilmes argues, acts as a distinct site within the text where past and present, self and other, image and text, seeing and hearing, are ever on the brink of reconciliation. The book surveys a wide field of critical inquiry, encompassing classical theorizations of ekphrasis, philosophical explorations of memory and visuality, as well as seminal studies of image-text relations by, among others, W. J. T. Mitchell, Jean-Luc Nancy and Liliane Louvel. Bilmes's compelling dialogue with theory and literature evinces the underexplored bond between ekphrasis and memory in the contemporary novel.

This landmark collection makes a major contribution to the burgeoning field of broadside ballad study by investigating the hitherto unexplored treasure-trove of over 100,000 Central/Eastern European broadside ballads of the Czech Republic, from the 16th to the 19th century. Viewing Czech broadside ballads from an interdisciplinary perspective, we see them as unique and regional cultural phenomena: from their production and collecting processes to their musicology, linguistics, preservation, and more. At the same time, as contributors note, when viewed within a larger perspective-extending one's gaze to take in ballad production in bordering lands (such as Germany, Poland, and Slovakia) and as far Northwest as Britain to as far Southwest as Brazil-we discover an international phenomenon at work. Czech printed ballads, we see, participated in a thriving popular culture of broadside ballads that spoke through text, art, and song to varied interests of the masses, especially the poor, worldwide

COVID-19's impacts revealed that teaching writing online was no longer merely an issue of convenience or economic necessity-it was critical to public health and equity concerns as well. Now higher education faces one of its greatest historical challenges, expanding online offerings to fully engage and support students around the world. Gathering together educators who teach writing at college and graduate levels using creative hybrid, blended, and online/remote/virtual modes, this book should be required reading for all teachers and administrators. The volume features those new to online teaching alongside experienced online writing teachers. Referencing the latest research in online teaching and writing, contributors share stories of crucial successes as well as unforeseen difficulties. Essays address compelling concerns such as engaging diversity and cultural inclusivity, social justice, as well as global learning in online writing courses; radically reshaping graduate seminars for online delivery; flipping classrooms to promote more successful writing instruction; fostering greater community within online writing classrooms; examining the problems and possibilities of Learning Management Systems for teaching writing; sustaining remote writing-centered archival research; avoiding Zoom fatigue in writing classes by using design thinking; utilizing expressive arts in online writing classes; mentoring doctoral students online; constructing meaningful approaches to online peer writing feedback; as well as making access and inclusivity central to online writing course design

The year 2019 marked the 300th anniversary of Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe. His novel was a huge success right away and was soon followed by bootlegs and translations. With the robinsonade, an independent genre of adventure literature was born. These contributions examine the novel within the context of bookselling history, provide new interpretations, and shed light on its multifaceted adaptation history up into the twenty-first century

The furious text has not been an object of systematic analysis until now. In this volume, this analysis is based on an interdisciplinary definition of the emotion of fury itself. Text analyses thus provide insights that go beyond previous findings from the fields of poetics, rhetoric, linguistics, and psychology. Although this study takes up the theory of satire, it develops a new approach to categorize and analyze aggressive writing

This book tests the limits of fugitivity as a concept in recent Black feminist and Afro-pessimist thought. It follows the conceptual travels of confinement and flight through three major Black writing traditions in North America from the 1840s to the early 21st century. Cultural analysis is the basic methodological approach and recent concepts of captivity and fugitivity in Afro-pessimist and Black feminist theory form the theoretical framework

This timely volume focuses on the period of decolonization and the Cold War as the backdrop to the emergence of new and diverse literary aesthetics that accompanied anti-imperialist commitments and Afro-Asian solidarity. Competing internationalist frameworks produced a flurry of writings that made Asian, African and other world literatures visible to each other for the first time. The book's essays examine a host of print culture formats (magazines, newspapers, manifestos, conference proceedings, ephemera, etc.) and modes of cultural mediation and transnational exchange that enabled the construction of a variously inflected Third-World culture which played a determining role throughout the Cold War. The essays in this collection focus on locations as diverse as Morocco, Tunisia, South Asia, China, Spain, and Italy, and on texts in Arabic, English, French, Hindi, Italian, and Spanish. In doing so, they highlight the combination of local debates and struggles, and internationalist networks and aspirations that found expression in essays, novels, travelogues, translations, reviews, reportages and other literary forms. With its comparative study of print cultures with a focus on decolonization and the Cold War, the volume makes a major contribution both to studies of postcolonial literary and print cultures, and to cultural Cold War studies in multilingual and non-Western contexts, and will be of interest to historians and literary scholars alike

Martin Luther was not just a great reformer and bible translator, but also an extremely pugnacious and, in his argumentation, sometimes polemical contemporary. This form of linguistic aggression is very clearly expressed in his pamphlet "Against the Papacy of Rome, Founded by the Devil" of 1545. This volume reveals the linguistic means that he used to implement this by undertaking a practical argumentation analysis

Should we take the author's intention into account when interpreting literature? The question has been a subject of fierce debate since the 1940s that shows no signs of abating. The notion of authorial intent, however, has a historical depth that is often overlooked in this debate. This book provides this missing history of authorial intent from Classical Greece to the present day

Today, literally any political, economic or aesthetic phenomenon will seem incomprehensible if not viewed through the lens of 'social networks'. Sociology, historiography and art history are well equipped for this conundrum: These disciplines can rely on an adequate and long-standing foundation of network theory. This, however, is not the case for literary and cultural studies. Here, networks and network research are still rare and under-theorized. The present volume aims to help close this gap. Networks and worknets (Bruno Latour) take us beyond the traditional, 'strong' concepts of subjectivity that prevail even in postcolonial studies: i.e. beyond an emphasis on individual experience, struggle and emancipation. Consisting of multiple and disperse "affinités déspatialisées" (Boltanski/Chiapello), networks also leave the 'spatial turn' and its massive reliance on physical extension behind. This volume offers an introduction to network research from a Romance Studies perspective. It features a series of international contributions on artistic and social networks in the Americas, the Caribbean and Europe. By focusing on the historical period between the Mexican Revolution and the fall of the Berlin Wall, this volume highlights an epoch that - through a digitally networked public sphere - is regaining its relevance today
