"Cicero (Marcus Tullius, 106-43 BC), Roman advocate, orator, politician, poet, and philosopher, about whom we know more than we do of any other Roman, lived through the stirring era that saw the rise, dictatorship, and death of Julius Caesar in a tottering republic. In Cicero's political speeches and in his correspondence, we see the excitement, tension and intrigue of politics and the important part he played in the turmoil of the time. Although Cicero's oratory is well attested-of 106 known speeches, fifty-eight survive intact or in large part-the sixteen speeches that survive only in quotations nevertheless fill gaps in our knowledge. These speeches attracted the interest of later authors, particularly Asconius and Quintilian, for their exemplary content, oratorical strategies, or use of language, failing to survive entire not because they were inferior in quality or interest but due to factors contingent on the way Cicero's speeches were read, circulated, and evaluated in (especially late) antiquity. The fragmentary speeches fall, like Cicero's career in general, into three periods: the preconsular, the consular, and the postconsular, and here are presented chronologically, numbered continuously, and their fragments arranged, insofar as possible, in the order in which they would have occurred, followed by unplaced quotations. Each speech receives an introduction and ample notation. This edition, which completes the Loeb Classical Library edition of Cicero, includes all speeches with attested fragments, together with testimonia. Based upon Crawford's edition of 1994, the sources have been examined afresh, and newer source-editions substituted where appropriate"--

"This book offers the edition, translation into French and analysis of all the chancery documents (in Arabic, Latin and Italian) concerning the relations established between Florence and the Mamluk sultanate between 1422 and 1510. Taking into consideration the achievements made in recent decades in the field of Mamluk diplomatics, this work corrects several errors and inaccuracies contained in previous editions as well as presents some unpublished documents. An introduction addresses the historical framework of diplomatic relations and examines the characteristics of the sources. A rich body of explanatory notes and a glossary analyze their content. The sources published in this volume constitute the historical testimony available for outlining the framework of the diplomatic exchanges maintained by the City of the Lily and Mamluk Cairo.

The purpose of this edition is to take up Buecheler's admirable sylloge of Carmina Latina Epigraphica (1895-1926, 3 volumes). Since 1926 many new Latin metrical inscriptions and graffiti have been discovered, which greatly increased the number of epigraphic poetic texts previously known. These inscriptions have to be collected in order to be easily found, known and noticeable; the present sylloge aims at this outcome. An essential apparatus criticus with textual, historical, metrical, linguistic, and stylistic notes (approximately as in Buecheler's edition) accompanies the edition of the texts. The texts are collected in three sections; the first and major section includes the carmina epigraphica whose metrical nature is undoubted, the second includes the commatica and the texts of dubious nature, the third one the aliena. In sections one and two the texts are arranged essentially according to the diatopic distribution and, inwards, to the chronological one. A concise preface focuses the most important questions in the field of the Latin metrical epigraphy. Many indexes conclude the work in two volumes, comprising about 1600 texts

"A fascinating insight into the most talented Latin poets to occupy the Papal throne after Pius II Piccolomini in the 15th century, this book offers translations of and commentaries on the major poems of the three popes (all Italians): Urban VIII Barberini, Alexander VII Chigi and Leo XIII Pecci. Their highly accomplished Neo-Latin poems owe much to the major Latin poets and are significant instances of classical reception, but also cast an interesting light on their lives, times and papacies"--

"Quintus Ennius (239-169 BC), widely regarded as the father of Roman literature, was instrumental in creating a new Roman literary identity and inspired major developments in Roman religion, social organization, and popular culture. Brought in 204 to Rome in the entourage of Cato, Ennius took up residence on the Aventine and, fluent in his native Oscan as well as Greek and Latin, became one of the first teachers to introduce Greek learning to Romans through public readings of Greek and Latin texts. Best known for domesticating Greek epic and drama, Ennius also pursued a wide range of literary endeavors and found success in almost all of them. His tragedies were long regarded as classics of the genre, and his Annals gave Roman epic its canonical shape and pioneered many of its most characteristic features. Other works included philosophical works in prose and verse, epigrams, didactic poems, dramas on Roman themes (praetextae), and occasional poetry that informed the later development of satire. This two-volume edition of Ennius, which inaugurates the Loeb series Fragmentary Republican Latin, replaces that of Warmington in Remains of Old Latin, Volume I and offers fresh texts, translations, and annotation that are fully current with modern scholarship."--Publisher's description
