For the first time, the Alexandrine fragments on the Iliad have been systematically compiled and newly edited with a commentary, and unlike all earlier editions, special attention has been given to their transmitted form. Van Thiel's innovative view of the ancient Ekdoseis as working copies and his systematic consideration of the D-scholia make this edition an indispensable tool for further studies on the transmission of the Iliad

This is the first modern commentary devoted exclusively to the epigrams of Lucillius, a prolific Neronian poet who, in spite of being one of the most significant representatives of the Greek satirical epigram, has primarily been studied not for his own value, but for the influence he had on Martial. The volume contains an extensive introduction, a new critical text and translation, and a full literary and philological commentary

Sophocles' Ajax describes the fall of a mighty warrior denied the honour which he believed was his due. This edition of the play presents a text and critical apparatus which take full advantage of advances in our understanding of Sophoclean manuscripts and scholarship. The introduction and commentary scrutinise all important aspects of the drama - from detailed analysis of style, language, and metre to consideration of wider issues such as ethics, rhetoric, and characterisation. Notorious dramaturgical problems, including the staging of Ajax's suicide, receive particular attention; so too do questions of literary history, such as the date of the play and Sophocles' creative interaction with previous accounts of the myth. The translation which accompanies the commentary ensures that this edition will be accessible to Hellenists of all levels of experience, as well as to readers with a general interest in the history of drama

Progymnasmata are literally "exercises" that are "preliminary" to declamation, which is the composition and delivery of ostensibly impromptu speeches in the guise of fictional, mythical, or historical characters who serve as prosecution or defense in fictitious trial scenarios. Basilakes's collection includes highly polished examples of fable, narration, maxim, refutation, confirmation, encomium, and ethopoeia. Basilakes's exercises draw on myth, ancient history, the Bible, and other Christian texts, and they use specific words and phrases from ancient Greek epic, tragedy, historiography, and other genres. The progymnasmata also feature mythological and biblical stories that Basilakes treats more than once, the most obvious example being his handling of the myth of Atalanta as both a refutation and a confirmation. In other cases, however, he revisits stories so as to highlight different perspectives, changes in disposition, and moral dilemmas....

Book XXII recounts the climax of the Iliad: the fatal encounter between the main defender of Troy and the greatest warrior of the Greeks, which results in the death of Hector and Achilles' revenge for the death of his friend Patroclus. At the same time it adumbrates Achilles' own death and the fall of Troy. This edition will help students and scholars better appreciate this key part of the epic poem. The introduction summarises central debates in Homeric scholarship, such as the circumstances of composition and the literary interpretation of an oral poem, and offers synoptic discussions of the structure of the Iliad, the role of the narrator, similes and epithets. There is a separate section on language, which provides a compact list of the most frequent Homeric characteristics. The commentary offers up-to-date linguistic guidance, and elucidates narrative techniques, typical elements and central themes

The Alcibiades was widely read in antiquity as the very best introduction to Plato. Alcibiades in his youth associated with Socrates, and went on to a spectacularly disgraceful career in politics. When Socrates was executed for 'corrupting the young men', Alcibiades was cited as a prime example. This dialogue represents Socrates meeting the charming but intellectually lazy Alcibiades as he is about to enter adult life, and using all his wiles in an attempt to win him for philosophy. In spite of its ancient reputation, many modern scholars have thought that the Alcibiades is not by Plato and it has therefore lacked a decent commentary. This edition remedies that lack. The notes explain difficulties of linguistic, literary and philosophical detail. The introduction includes a discussion of the dialogue's authenticity, and of the consequences that acknowledging its authenticity has for our conception of Plato's intellectual development
