    Although vastly influential in German-speaking Europe, conceptual history (Begriffsgeschichte) has until now received little attention in English. This genre of intellectual history differs from both the French history of mentalités and the Anglophone history of discourses by positing the concept - the key occupier of significant syntactical space - as the object of historical investigation. Contributions by distinguished practitioners and critics of conceptual history from Europe and America illustrate both the distinctiveness and diversity of the genre. The first part of the book is devoted to the origins and identity of the field, as well as methodological issues. Part two presents exemplary studies focusing either on a particular concept (such as Maurizio Viroli's 'Reason of the State') or a particular approach to conceptual history (e.g. Bernard Scholz for literary criticism and Terence Ball for political science). The final, most innovative section of the book looks at concepts and art - high, bourgeois and demotic. Here Bram Kempers discusses the conceptual history of Raphael's frescos in the Stanza della Segnatura of the Vatican; Eddy de Jongh examines the linguistic character of much Dutch genre painting; and Rolf Reichardt considers the conceptual structure implicit in card games of the French Revolution, used to induct those on the margins of literacy into the new revolutionary world-view.

    In spite of the fact that assessment criteria in general proficiency testing (GPT) is an area of extreme importance, being the expression of the underlying general proficiency construct, little has been said in the literature regarding the source of such assessment criteria. Unfortunately, even less has been done towards answering the important question of whether the application of exclusively teacher-based perceptions to GP assessment criteria is sound, given the act that context of use and test interpretation involves the general public. This paper outlines a rater cognition study that explored the GP construct by examining unguided reactions of 2 non-teacher native speakers (NSs) with 2 NS teachers. Notable quantitative and qualitative differences were found. The findings suggest that the construct of GP as rooted in the perspectives of teachers trained in the use of rating scales has questionable utility to the actual contexts where GP test scores will be interpreted, and where the abilities measured in GP tests will actually be used.

    A critical exploration of travel, animals and shape-changing in fin de siècle literature. Bats, beetles, wolves, butterflies, bulls, panthers, apes, leopards and spiders are among the countless creatures that crowd the pages of literature of the late nineteenth century. Whether in Gothic novels, science fiction, fantasy, fairy tales, journalism, political discourse, realism or naturalism, the line between the human and the animal becomes blurred. Beastly Journeys examines these bestial transformations across a range of well-known and less familiar texts and shows how they are provoked not only by the mutations of Darwinism but by social and economic shifts that have been lost in retellings and readings of them. The physical alterations described by George Gissing, George MacDonald, Arthur Machen, Arthur Morrison, W.T. Stead, Bram Stoker, H.G. Wells, Oscar Wilde, and many of their contemporaries, are responses to changes in the social body as Britain underwent a series of social and economic crises. Metaphors of travel - social, spatial, temporal, mythical and psychological - keep these stories on the move, confusing literary genres along with the indeterminacy of physical shape that they relate. Beastly Journeys will appeal to anyone interested in the relationship between nineteenth-century literature and its contexts and especially to those interested in the fin de siècle and in metaphors of travel, animals and shape-changing.     Seit Mitte der 1990er Jahre Autoren wie Kader Abdolah, Mustafa Stitou, Hafid Bouazza und Abdelkader Benali für Furore sorgten, ist die Literatur von Migranten aus der literarischen Debatte in den Niederlanden nicht mehr wegzudenken. Besonders zu Beginn priesen Kritiker das Neue und Bereichernde und verwiesen zugleich auf die lange Tradition der Multikulturalität der Niederlande. Die Betonung der Verbindung von Elementen unterschiedlicher Kulturen lässt dabei besonders ein Konzept erwarten: das der Hybridität. In der niederländischen Rezeption der Literatur von Migranten spielt dieses Konzept jedoch kaum eine Rolle. Die vorliegende Studie greift diese Diskrepanz auf und untersucht anhand von Beispielen aus der niederländischen Diskussion den historisch und geografisch spezifischen Gebrauch von Konzepten des Kulturkontakts und der Kulturvermischung. Im Zentrum der Untersuchung steht die Rezeption von sieben Autoren, die im Laufe des 20. Jahrhunderts debütierten: Albert Helman und Cola Debrot für die Zwischenkriegszeit und die 1950er Jahre, Frank Martinus Arion, Astrid Roemer und Marion Bloem für die 1970er und 1980er Jahre sowie Hafid Bouazza und Abdelkader Benali für die 1990er und 2000er Jahre. In der diachronen Perspektive zeigt sich, dass eine Rezeption unter Aspekten des Kulturkontakts und der Kulturvermischung keineswegs selbstverständlich ist. Ebenso wird deutlich, wie stark die Debatte durch nationale Traditionen und Denkweisen geprägt ist, die nicht zuletzt dem Anspruch des Offenheit und Instabilität propagierenden Konzepts der Hybridität Grenzen setzen

    This book considers first-person writing and the related questions of the formation of the self, the rise of the individual and the private/public debate, and places these considerations within a multicultural perspective. It compares the characteristics of European or Occidental personal writings (such as diaries, memoirs and autobiographies) with the written forms of personal, intimate and autobiographical self which have existed and continue to exist within various Asian, African or Near Eastern cultures.     Hans Eichner belongs to that group of Jewish intellectuals who fled Nazi Germany or Austria in the 1930s and who subsequently exerted a formative influence on German Studies in the English-speaking world. Eichner made a new home in Canada, where he taught first at Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, and then for many years at the University of Toronto. He was known mainly for his work on Thomas Mann, on German Romanticism, and as a co-editor of the historical-critical edition of Friedrich Schlegel's collected works. The essays in this volume by Hans Eichner's colleagues, friends, and students deal with Romanticism, Humanism and Judaism, subjects which occupied Eichner throughout his long scholarly career. Contributors also pay homage to his importance as scholar, as teacher, and as the author of an autobiographical novel about the fate of Hungarian-Austrian Jews, written late in his life.

    The essays illuminate the work of a Jewish scholar who was always conscious of the paradox of dedicating his life to German literature, after and despite the Holocaust. Hans Eichner gehört zu den jüdischen Intellektuellen, die in den dreißiger Jahren aus dem Nationalsozialistischen Deutschland oder aus Österreich flohen und in der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts eine prägende Rolle in der Auslandsgermanistik spielten. Eichner fand in Kanada seine neue Heimat, wo er zuerst an der Queen's University in Kingston, Ontario, und dann viele Jahre an der Universität Toronto lehrte. Er wurde vor allem bekannt durch seine Arbeiten über Thomas Mann, die deutsche Romantik und als Mitherausgeber der historisch-kritischen Friedrich-Schlegel-Ausgabe.

    Die Aufsätze in diesem Band, verfasst von Kollegen, Freunden und Schülern Hans Eichners, nehmen die Themen Romantik, Humanismus und Judentum auf, mit denen sich Hans Eichner während seiner langen wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn auseinandersetzte. Andere Beiträge würdigen seine Bedeutung als Wissenschaftler, Lehrer und als Autor eines autobiographischen Romans über das Schicksal der ungarisch-österreichischen Juden, den er spät in seinem Leben schrieb.     Observing filmic product translation from multiple perspectives is the challenging subject of this volume, which opens up new ways of reading and sustaining dialogue on both theoretical and didactic levels. Its central focus is an observation of European and Oriental languages, gathering together reflections on English, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Russian, Arabic, Chinese and Japanese, as well as specific languages for hearing-impaired Italians, also analysed in their relation to Italian language and culture.
