    Employing thc theoretical resources provided by cultural critics such as Adorno, Jameson, Althusser, and Foucault, M. Keith Booker examines the treatment of issues of power and domination in modern literature. Discussing texts such as Virginia Woolf's The Waves, Vladimir Nabokov's Lolita, Thomas Pynchon's V., and Italo Calvino's If on a winter's night a traveler, Booker focuses on gender relations as a locus of struggles for power in human relations generally. He also pays special attention to the work of Samuel Beckett, reading the novels Watt and The Lost Ones to explore the issues of power and domination in an Irish cultural context. For all of the texts read, such issues are explored in terms not only of content but of style and form. What is distinctive about many modern texts, Booker claims, is the reflexive way literary meditations on power, authority, and domination turn inward to involve examinations of textuality and reading as images of the kinds of struggles for mastery that inform society at large. Booker suggests that literary knowledge is of a different order than the traditional theoretical knowledge that is equated with power in the West. "Literature has the potential to explore and illuminate objects of inquiry in a mode of dialogue and performance rather than by seeking to dominate them in the traditional mode of science," he writes. "Especially in the difficult and complex texts of modern literature, successful reading requires that readers and texts work together, pointing toward ways the human drive for mastery can be fulfilled through cooperation rather than through demanding the submission of some Other who is being mastered or dominated."

Dazu zählen eine frühe Studie zur Sprach- und Symboltheorie, eine phänomenologische Deutung von Sprachpathologien sowie der späte und bedeutende Aufsatz »Symbol, Wirklichkeit und Gesellschaft«. Zusätzlich enthält der Band die Vorlesungen zur Sprachsoziologie, die in einer aus Mitschriften seiner Studenten rekonstruierten Fassung publiziert werden. Diese Arbeiten von Schütz kreisen um die Frage der Möglichkeitsbedingungen sozialer Ordnung. Vor dem Hintergrund der Brüchigkeit dieser Ordnung verweist Schütz auf die bindenden Kräfte der Sprache. Vor allem die Sprache ist für den Aufbau und den Erhalt von Intersubjektivität relevant, denn gerade in der sprachvermittelten Kommunikation (re-)produzieren die Mitglieder einer Gesellschaft die wechselseitige Unterstellung einer gemeinsam geteilten Lebenswelt. Diese sprachlich vermittelten Intersubjektivitätskonstruktionen erweisen sich als wesentliche Bedingung für die Möglichkeit von Sozialität. Insgesamt eröffnet der Band nicht nur den Zugang zur Entwicklung von Schütz' Denken über Zeichen, Sprache und Kommunikation.     Julio Ramón Ribeyro has been widely acclaimed Peru's master storyteller. Until now, however, few of his stories have been translated into English. This volume brings together fifteen stories written during the period 1952-1975, which were collected in the three volumes of La palabra del mudo. Ribeyro's stories treat the social problems brought about by urban expansion, including poverty, racial and sexual discrimination, class struggles, alienation, and violence. At the same time, elements of the fantastic playfully interrupt some of the stories. As Ribeyro's characters become swept up in circumstances beyond their understanding, we see that the only freedom or dignity left them comes from their own imaginations.     Selbst seine kritischen Rezensenten mussten einräumen, dass Vulpius (1762 - 1827) insbesondere nach dem Erfolg seines Räuberromans Rinaldo Rinaldini (1799) zu den wahrhaft populären Autoren seiner Zeit zu zählen war, 'berühmt wie ein Sprichwort'. Trotz etlicher Versuche im hohen Stil tragischer Formen, die selbst am Wiener Hoftheater Beachtung fanden, wurde er mit über 30 dramatischen Texte und annähernd 70 Romanen zu einem der meistgelesenen Unterhaltungsautoren der Goethezeit, dem selbst Thomas Mann in "Lotte in Weimar" seinen Tribut nicht versagte. Wenngleich die literarische Kritik mitunter wünschte, dass seine 'Fruchtbarkeit nicht permanent' sei, gelang es Goethes Schwager Vulpius, ausgehend vom galanten Unterhaltungston Wielands, vor allem erzählende Genres zu entwickeln, deren Montagetechnik unmittelbar auf die serielle Produktion der Kolportageromane des 19. und 20. Jahrhunderts wirkte. Verblüffend muss der heutige Leser konstatieren, dass auf dem Revers der glänzenden Medaille Weimarer Klassik eine 'triviale Klassik' ihre Spuren hinterlassen hat.Die vorliegende mit einer umfangreichen Einführung versehene Ausgabe seiner Korrespondenz umfasst etwa 750 Briefe von und ca. 160 Briefe an Vulpius, die das gesamte Feld seiner Tätigkeit erschließen und eine Innenperspektive der Organisation kultureller Institutionen des Klassischen Weimar eröffnen. Ergänzt um mehrere Hundert amtliche Schriften und erschlossene Briefe, über die in Regestform berichtet wird, dokumentiert dieses Briefkorpus verwaltungstechnische wie ästhetische Entscheidungsprozesse innerhalb des Herzoglichen Hoftheaters, für das Vulpius als Dramaturg Goethes die Bühneneinrichtungen nahezu sämtlicher Opern und Singspiele in den 1790er Jahren vornahm und vor allem der Herzoglichen Bibliothek, in der er eine Karriere vom Registrator bis zum die Geschäfte leitenden Herzoglichen Bibliothekar durchlief. Vor allem als von den Zeitgenossen geschätzter Verfasser und Herausgeber vorwiegend lokalhistorischer Zeitschriften wie Die Vorzeit und den Curiositäten hat auch Vulpius seinen Anteil an der Entwicklung öffentlichkeitsorientierter Strukturen des kollektiven Gedächtnisses.Der zweite Band enthält einen umfassenden philologisch-historischen Kommentar.
