War does not choose its victims. The suffering it brings extends beyond the battlefield or ground zero. Eventually, children get caught in a mess, not of their own choosing. This story shows how, sometimes, children have the better judgment on how to cope with war. Having lived through war, they can prove to adults that differences in faith, culture, or even social status can be bridged by true friendship and understanding

This is a story of care and concern for others even how different they are. Lake Lanao is rich in diversity with different animals who during a strong typhoon help each other to find shelter and safety. The typhoon represents the terrorist attack on Marawi and the animals the people who lived in Marawi who were of different religions, ethnicity, social status, etc. This Marawi Storybook Series is part of the Gift of Reading Project of the Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP) for the young survivors of the 2017 Marawi conflict. We hope that these stories, that are based on actual experiences of affected residents, will inspire and help heal the wounds of war. We also envision these to serve as instruments of peace and development and to promote greater consciousness on the Maranao identity, culture, and community values.
