Vanderschelden , S. 85). - Die Bücher der Iliasparaphrase sind entsprechend der Buchzählung der Ilias mit rubrizierten griechischen Buchstaben ("α-ω", oben auf jeder Rectoseite sowie zu Buchbeginn) gezählt. f. 1r–12r "α"; f. 12v–29r "β"; f. 29v–38r "γ"; f. 38r–48v "δ"; f. 49r–66r "ε"; f. 66v–76v "ζ"; f. 76v–85v "η"; f. 86r–96v "θ"; f. 96v–110r "ι"; f. 110r–121r "κ"; f. 121v–137v "λ"; f. 137v–146v "μ"; f. 146v–162v "ν"; f. 162v–172v "ξ"; f. 172v–187r "ο"; f. 187r–203v "π"; f. 203v–218r "ρ"; f. 218v–230r "σ"; f. 230r–238r "τ"; f. 238v–248r "υ"; f. 248r–259v "φ"; f. 259v–269v "χ"; f. 269v–287r "ψ"; f. 287r–302r "ω"

"Aristotle's De Animalibus was an important source of zoological knowledge for the ancient Greeks and for medieval Arabs and Europeans. In the thirteenth century, the work was twice translated into Latin. One translation was produced directly from the Greek by William of Moerbeke. An earlier translation, made available as a critical edition in the present volume for the first time, was produced through an intermediary Arabic translation (Kitāb al-Ḥayawān) by Michael Scot (1175--c. 1232). Scot's translation was one of the main sources of knowledge on animals in Europe and widely used until well into the fifteenth century. As a faithful translation of a translation produced by a Syriac-speaking Christian, the text contributes to our knowledge of Middle Arabic. The De Animalibus is composed of three sections: History of Animals (ten books), Parts of Animals (four books) and Generation of Animals (five books). Parts of Animals and Generation of Animals were published by Brill as Volumes 5.2 and 5.3 of the book series ASL in 1998 (ASL 5.2) and 1992 (ASL 5.3). The present Volume 5.1.a contains the first section of Scot's translation of History of Animals: the general introduction and books 1--3, with Notes. Editions of the two concluding parts of History of Animals, ASL 5.1.b, books 4--6 and ASL 5.1.c, books 7--10, are in preparation. Complete Latin-Arabic and Arabic-Latin indices of History of Animals will be published in due course"--

The Letters of Psellos' is the first detailed study of the correspondence of Michael Psellos, a leading Byzantine intellectual, politician, and writer of the eleventh century. Psellos' corpus of over 500 letters represents a historical source of great significance for the study of society and culture of the time: literary masterpieces in and of themselves, yet often complex and difficult to understand in their entirety, they not only rebound with subtlety and humour, but also offer invaluable information on myriad subjects ranging from the political culture of Byzantium and its civil administration to social codes, religious beliefs, and popular culture

This is the first critical edition of the 520 letters of Michael Psellos, based on approximately 40 medieval Greek manuscripts. Psellos (11th c., Constantinople) is a well-known figure among students of Byzantine culture. A recent survey recorded 1176 Psellian texts, approximately 1790 medieval and early modern manuscripts with one or more of these texts, and ca. 1300 bibliographical items, from 1497 to the year 2000. Psellos also figures in modern non-academic writing: in Renaissance novels, in Seferis, Auden, and others. Psellos is thus arguably among the most prolific and popular medieval Greek authors. The appeal is no accident. Psellos wrote about nearly every subject and in just about every Byzantine genre. His philosophical texts and lectures are invaluable sources of Byzantine knowledge. The rhetorical writings, such as speeches, histories, and, most importantly, the letters edited here offer us glimpses into the lives of well-known but also everyday Byzantines. Psellos’ letter-collection is, after all, one of the finest specimens of this popular Byzantine genre. It sheds light to networks of Constantinopolitan ruling elite, and, most importantly, habits of literary imagination as well as typologies of self

"This volume presents a commentary on Aristotle's Metaphysics Book 12 by pseudo-Alexander in a new translation accompanied by explanatory notes, introduction and indexes. Fred D. Miller, Jr. argues that the author of the commentary is in fact not Alexander of Aphrodisias, Aristotle's distant successor in early 3rd century CE Athens and his leading defender and interpreter, but Michael of Ephesus from Constantinople as late as the 12th century CE. Robert Browning had earlier made the case that Michael was enlisted by Princess Anna Comnena in a project to restore and complete the ancient Greek commentaries on Aristotle, including those of Alexander; he did so by incorporating available ancient commentaries into commentaries of his own. Metaphysics Book 12 posits a god as the supreme cause of motion in the cosmic system Aristotle had elaborated elsewhere as having the Earth at the centre. The fixed stars are whirled around it on an outer sphere, the sun, moon and recognised planets on interior spheres, but with counteracting spheres to make the motions of each independent of the motions of others and of the fixed stars, thus yielding a total of 55 spheres. Motion is transmitted from a divine unmoved mover through divine moved movers which move the celestial spheres, and on to the perishable realms. Chapters 1 to 5 describe the principles and causes of the perishable substances nearer the centre of the universe, while Chapters 6 to 10 seek to prove the existence and attributes of the celestial substances beyond"--
