"In seventeenth-century Britain every debate about loyalty oaths invoked the biblical Samson. Samson's Cords argues that these loyalty tests became an unprecedentedly pervasive feature of life in Restoration England and that writers of satire and epic had no choice but to respond. Alex Garganigo examines the radically different responses of John Milton, Andrew Marvell, and Samuel Butler to the existential crises caused by this explosion of loyalty oaths. After early support, all three developed serious reservations, confronting the irony that while oaths often exclude and destroy, they also include and create. Tackling issues such as performance, ritual, religion, secularization, gender, swearing, republicanism, and citizenship, Garganigo offers original readings of Paradise Lost, Samson Agonistes, An Horatian Ode upon Cromwell's Return from Ireland, The Rehearsal Transpros'd, and Hudibras."-- Cover; Copyright; Contents; Illustrations; Preface; Acknowledgments; Introduction: Samson's Cords in Restoration England; 1 Conjuring Oaths and Identities in Hudibras; 2 Testing the Tests in The Rehearsal Transpros'd; 3 An Horatian Oath: The Horatian Ode, Secularism, and Toleration; 4 Samson's Cords: Imposing Oaths in Eikonoklastes and Samson Agonistes; 5 Paradise Lost I: God's Swearing By Himself: Milton's Troubling Coronation Oath; 6 Paradise Lost II: Of Apples, Oaths, and Women; Appendix: A Proposal for Emending One of Marvell's Letters; Notes; Bibliography; Index

"Being Poland offers a unique analysis of the cultural developments to take place in Poland after World War One, a period marked by Poland's return to independence. Conceived to address the lack of critical scholarship on Poland's cultural restoration, A Being Poland illuminates the continuities, paradoxes, and contradictions of Poland's modern and contemporary cultural practices, and challenges the narrative typically prescribed to Polish literature and film. Reflecting the radical changes, rifts, and restorations that swept through Poland, Polish literature and film reveals the multitude of perspectives to emerge after World War One. Addressing romantic perceptions of the Polish immigrant, the politics of post-war cinema, poetry, and mass media, Being Poland is a comprehensive reference work written with the intention of exposing an international audience to the explosion of Polish literature and film that emerged in the twentieth century."-- Part I. Transitions -- Part II. Strategies -- Part III. Transmissions -- Part IV. Genres and their discontents

Is the pícaro, the roguish hero of early modern Spanish adventure fiction, a 'real man'? What position does he hold in the gender hierarchy of his fictional social context? Why is the pícara so 'non-female'? What effect has her gender constitution on her fictional social context? In terms of a gendered subject, the picaresque figure has hardly been analyzed so far. Although scholars have recognized it as a transgressive and subversive model, the 'queer' effect of the figure is yet to be examined. With regard to the categories of class, generation, topography, and gender, the contributions assembled in this volume explore Spanish, French, English, and German novels narratologically from the perspective of culture and gender theories

While the Meiji era saw a proliferation of these latter forms, traditional forms of poetry remained widely read, and important literary figures--including the most famous novelists and public intellectuals--wrote and published poetry. Tuck looks at traditional Japanese poetry not as something separate from the concerns of the new order, but rather as an integral part of both the emerging new forms of media and the emerging national consciousness. Tuck organizes his argument primarily (although not exclusively) around Masaoka Shiki. Shiki is known mostly for his haiku, but he wrote in all three major poetic genres, and worked for most of his career at the newspaper Nippon, one of Japan's most politically engaged and high minded metropolitan dailies. There has been no English language monograph focusing on Shiki"--

Ling Hon Lam gives a deeply original account of the history of emotions in Chinese literature and culture centered on the idea of emotion as space, which the Chinese call "emotion-realm" (qingjing). Lam traces how the emotion-realm underwent significant transformations from the dreamscape to theatricality in sixteenth- to eighteenth-century China. Whereas medieval dreamscapes delivered the subject into one illusory mood after another, early modern theatricality turned the dreamer into a spectator who is no longer falling through endless oneiric layers but pausing in front of the dream. Through the lens of this genealogy of emotion-realms, Lam remaps the Chinese histories of morals, theater, and knowledge production, which converge at the emergence of sympathy, redefined as the dissonance among the dimensions of the emotion-realm pertaining to theatricality. The book challenges the conventional reading of Chinese literature as premised on interior subjectivity, examines historical changes in the spatial logic of performance through media and theater archaeologies, and ultimately uncovers the different trajectories that brought China and the West to the convergence point of theatricality marked by self-deception and mutual misreading. A major rethinking of key terms in Chinese culture from a comparative perspective, The Spatiality of Emotion in Early Modern China develops a new critical vocabulary to conceptualize history and existence

The push to characterize these exchanges as developing a cosmopolitanism or producing elements of cultural imperialism misses the particularities or limits of cross-cultural interactions. Taking a closer look at a series of encounters among Chinese and American writers, scholars, and activists during the nineteenth century, Nan Da considers how ideas from other cultures were actually thought about and used in ways to preserve their own national traditions or in ways quite different than their original intent. The book is structured around different episodes of exchange that includes such figures as Washington Irving, Emerson, Yung Wing (founder of the Chinese Educational Mission at Yale), Longfellow, and Chinese and American feminist writers at the end of the century" --

What is The Pillow Book? -- (Re- )constructing the text and early modern scholarship -- From a guide to court life to a guide to the pleasure quarters -- The Pillow Book for early modern female readers -- Shaping the woman writer -- New markets for Japanese classics Gergana Ivanova explores how The Pillow Book and its author have been read from the seventeenth century to the present. She shows how various ideologies have influenced the text and shaped interactions among its different versions, in the first book-length study in English of the reception history of Sei Shōnagon

"Functional diversity, understood as a bodily, cognitive or psychic affection, often seriously disrupts the participation of people in collective life. At times, functional diversity can also be accompanied by a strong social stigma. This volume offers one of the first approaches to the representation of functional diversity in the Hispanic sphere. The works included in this book are in charge of showing the possible theoretical and practical approaches to the representation of functional diversity, through a varied corpus composed of literary, scenic, cinematographic and audiovisual works, extracted from the contemporary Hispanic creation"--Publisher's website "La diversidad funcional, entendida como una afección corporal, cognitiva o psíquica, a menudo altera gravemente la participación de las personas en la vida colectiva.
