This work provides a detailed introduction to the theories put forward by the founder-fathers of the 'New Rhetoric', represented here by I.A. Richards, the champions of the New Semantics, Richard M. Weaver and Kenneth Burke. The author outlines the basic tenets and pinpoints an impulse common to the entire 'New Rhetoric' movement in its early stages destined to become a major influence in the development of rhetorics as an academic discipline in the United States. What these theories all have in common, the author suggests, is their claim to establish and entrench the status of rhetoric as a root discipline fundamental to all others

    Notes:

"Like love, Greek poetry was not for hereafter," writes Eva Stehle, "but shared in the present mirth and laughter of festival, ceremony, and party." Describing how men and women, young and adult, sang or recited in public settings, Stehle treats poetry as an occasion for the performer's self-presentation. She discusses a wide range of pre-Hellenistic poetry, including Sappho's, compares how men and women speak about themselves, and constructs an innovative approach to performance that illuminates gender ideology. After considering the audience and the function of different modes of performance--community, bardic, and closed groups--Stehle explores this poetry as gendered speech, which interacts with performers' bodily presence to create social identities for the speakers. Texts for female choral performers reveal how women in public spoke in order to disavow the power of their speech and their sexual power.

Male performers, however, could manipulate gender as an ideological system: they sometimes claimed female identity in addition to male, associated themselves with triumph over a defeated (mythical) female figure, or asserted their disconnection from women, thereby creating idealized social identities for themselves. A final chapter concentrates on the written poetry of Sappho, which borrows the communicative strategy of writing in order to create a fictional speaker distinct from the singer, a "Sappho" whom others could re-create in imagination.Originally published in 1996.The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press.

Main description: This description of the reception accorded to Oscar Wilde's comedies in Germany from 1902 to 1992 is based on 90 translations and/or adaptations and 200 stage productions. Central aspects discussed are the initial failure of the comedies (in conjunction with the identification of the first translator of the "Importance of Being Earnest", F.P. Greve), André Gide's and Carl Hagemann's enormous influence on their reception, the triumphs of actress Adele Sandrock with these comedies in the 20s and 30s, the ideological exploitation of Wilde by the National Socialists, and the ironical criticism of the Nazis to be found in Ernst Sander's version of "The Importance of Being Earnest". The study demonstrates the significance of implicit scenic realizations in the minds of the translators and the effect these have had on reception in the theatre

Main description: The author presents not only a review of the research done into the specialist languages employed within the field of economics but also attempts to provide a theoretical foundation of the subject in the framework of a comprehensive language model. The emphasis is placed on the historical evolution of the academic language employed in the discussion of economics as a science. In theoretical texts from the 16th to the 20th century, the term Geld (money) is discussed both in terms of its conceptual development and the metaphors drawn upon to talk about the concept. It transpires that the Geld concept underwent major changes in the course of its history, whereas there is little change of any moment to be observed in the metaphors pressed into service to talk about money and to constitute Geld as an abstract theoretical concept

Main description: The "History of Spanish Literature" is designed not only to encourage the reader's interest in Spanish literature itself, but also to provide an introduction to current academic discussion on the subject. The present state of research in each area touched upon is faithfully reflected. Thus the emphasis is not on a mere collation of 'facts' but on the discussion and profounder significance of those facts. The attempt is made in all cases to define what is characteristic about a given author, epoch or literary genre

By restoring the poet's image to view against the cultural background that branded it as monstrous, Deutsch recasts Pope's literary career as a form of monstrous embodiment--a stamping of his own image on fragments of the cultural past

Like the miniatures of which Pope was so fond, the book is at once particular in its focus and wide-ranging in its conceptual scope. While drawing on recent feminist, historicist, and materialist criticism of Pope, as well as current theoretical work on the body, it also attends closely to the local ambiguities of the poet's texts and cultural milieu, details often lost to critical view. The result is a revitalized--and broadened--reading of Pope, and of our understanding of the processes of authorship. By focusing on the process by which ideas of authority and authenticity took shape at specific moments in Pope's career, Resemblance and Disgrace calls into question distinctions between theoretical abstractions and material details, between literary originality and critical derivation, following Pope's own example of rewriting intellectual boundaries as creative opportunities

Main description: Historical studies on Old and Middle High German and the corresponding stages in the development of Low German represent a fairly well-defined field of inquiry. The period between the 16th century and the present, by contrast, confronts historical language research with a considerable dilemma in that the language system can be regarded in many respects as not having undergone major changes so much as a process of extension and differentiation. The papers delivered at the Heidelberg colloquium and published here in book form discuss possible areas of inquiry for historical language research into the evolution of the German language since the early Modern Age, approaches to the problems this field presents and methods of describing the phenomena encountered. Particular emphasis is placed throughout on the history of reflection on language, the institutional concern with language and the manifold interpenetration between forms of language usage employed in society in general, in the history of ideas, the history of literature and across the various cultural areas of the German-speaking world
