    In its recent World Employment and Social Outlook, the ILO published estimates of the number of jobs related to global supply chains (GSCs) for 40 countries in 1995–2013. This paper provides a detailed description of the methodology that was used for the estimation and documents the links between GSC-related jobs and demand. The paper shows evidence on the number of jobs supported by demand in different export destinations and analyzes the number of GSC-related jobs in different country groups. In particular, we find evidence for the changing role of China, from a country in which GSC-related jobs are located to a country whose import demand creates these jobs elsewhere. We also show that production linkages between emerging economies create an increasing number of jobs. When focusing on jobs related to manufacturing GSCs, trends in GSC-related jobs reveal the increasing importance of the services sector. Finally, we conduct a sectoral regression analysis and provide evidence that increased GSC participation of a sector as a supplier can be associated with a drop in the wage share. We show that this result holds regardless of whether advanced or emerging economies are the final export destination, where demand originates.

    In Catalonia, between 2008 and 2014, the rate of youth unemployment has exponentially increased and it has turned into a structural problem: when the fourth quarter of 2014 ended, among the people under the age of 30, the number of unemployed people was 1,495,600, 645,000 more than in the first quarter of 2008. In addition, with the data provided by the Spanish Tax Agency, the average wage of wage earners over 25 years in 2014 is 3.4 times superior to the young people and the reduction of the average wage of these is 2.8 times bigger. Moreover, during this period, the annual income of women has shortened the distance in relation to men, mainly the employed group, from a ratio of 1.40 to 1.30, but in contrast, the number of women receiving minimal resources (MW and MP) has worsened: in relation to employees, 31.7% of the total number within this subgroup. In order to highlight the uneven impact of recession on the labor market in Catalonia, this study examines the evolution of its main variables in the period 2008-2014 from a gender and age perspectives delving into the structure wages and analyzing the distribution of inter-group and intra-group inequality between men and women.

    The goal of our paper is to better understand the economic implications of Temporary Foreign Worker (TFW) programs as well as comprehend the underlying reasons for the rapid expansion of the number of TFWs hired by employers under the Canadian program brought to light in 2014. We present an efficiency wage model that allows for the possibility that a firm, unable to find a worker after advertising for a period of time, may hire a TFW at the advertised wage. Due to the assumed lower outside option for the TFW than the domestic worker, the TFW will exert higher effort than a domestic worker even if the TFW is paid the same wage as would have been paid to a domestic worker. In equilibrium, lower wage offers are made to less-skilled domestic workers when a TFW program of this kind is in place. The model also implies higher unemployment rates for domestic workers after the introduction of a TFW program. Our empirical analysis is based on the confidential master files of the Canadian Census (1991-2006) and the Labour Force Survey (2006-2013). We find that TFWs in Canada work longer hours, have lower rates of absenteeism, and are less likely to be laid off, consistent with higher effort in our model. Moreover, TFWs work at lower wage rates than domestic workers even for similar job characteristics, which is also a prediction of our model.
