The aim of this paper is to evaluate the evolution of wage inequality components in Brazil, specifically the evolution of the return to unobserved skills, in the period of 2003 to 2013. We use a method similar to that proposed by Cortes e Hidalgo-Pérez (2015), based on a hypothesis of invariance of the dispersion of unobserved skills for a group of workers who remain employed between two consecutive years. We incorporated two rules into this method. First, we allowed the evolution of wage inequality to be affected by unobservable characteristics of firms. Second, it considers different sets of workers for whom the hypothesis of invariance of the dispersion of skills not observed between two consecutive years would apply. Our results obtained from Rais-Identified data show that the first extension affects the results, which are robust to the alternatives considered for the second extension of the method. The results of our preferred specification point to a growth in the return (price) to unobserved skills, much more intense than what occurs without considering the influence of unobservable characteristics of firms on workers’ wages.

In this paper, we estimate the distributive impacts of trade openness on within sector income distribution. The empirical approach is to estimate the econometric relation between effective rates of protection and various indicators of within sector inequality: the Gini and Theil indices of wage inequality in each economic sector, the ratio between wages of production and nonproduction workers, and the ratio between the wage bill and value added for each sector. The econometric specification is a fixed effects model in which each sector is compared to itself in various moments in time. The results show a significant but small effect of trade openness upon wage inequality as measured by Gini and Theil Coefficients and also small effects in the opposite direction between trade openness and the wage bill to value added ratio. This means that a substantive reduction in effective rates of protection will lead to small reductions in wage inequality and even smaller increases in the functional inequality in each sector.

The aim of this paper is to make a sectoral mapping of the labor market between 1995 and 2010, especially from the employment and wage data from the Annual Report of Social Information (Rais) and the General Register of Employed and Unemployed (Caged) of the Ministry of Labour and Employment (MTE), although information from the National Sample Survey (Pnad) and the Monthly Employment Survey (PME), both from IBGE have also been used. The study focused on the analysis of the trajectory of the sectoral composition of employment and employment-product elasticities' sector. Finally a discussion on income inequality in the formal sector of the economy and the impact of sectoral segmentation has on its evolution over the period in question was taken.
