We examine public trust in the European Central Bank (ECB) and its determinants using data from the Bundesbank Household Panel survey for Germany. Employing an interdisciplinary approach that integrates insights from political science and psychology, we offer a fresh perspective on the factors influencing central bank trust that is more holistic than the conventional one. Our primary findings can be summarized as follows. Households who state that competence, which we define as the ECB's performance in maintaining stable prices and making decisions grounded in rules, science, and data, matters for their trust in the ECB, tend to express higher trust in the ECB. Conversely, those who place greater importance on values, particularly the integrity of top central bankers, honest communication and broader concern, tend to trust the ECB less. Trust in the ECB also hinges on trust in political institutions more generally and, to a lesser extent, on generalized trust (i.e. trust in others).

This study investigates men's attitudes toward women's education in Afghanistan, focusing on primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, as well as studying in another province or abroad, through the lens of identity theory and the intra-household bargaining framework. We use data from Afghan surveys conducted by the Asia Foundation from 2014 to 2021 across 34 provinces and apply multivariate regression analysis with a comprehensive set of covariates. Our findings reveal that men's attitudes toward women's education are predominantly negative, notably in rural areas. However, women's contributions to household income significantly mitigate these negative attitudes, particularly toward secondary education, followed by tertiary education, and studying in other provinces or abroad. Moreover, fear of insecurity in society amplifies the negative attitudes of men toward women's education. This research underscores the potential of increased financial contributions by women to transform gender attitudes and promote educational equality in Afghanistan.

This paper studies the distribution of knowledge about the circular economy as a business concept. Knowledge about circularity is a prerequisite for the diffusion of innovation onto which the incorporation of more circularity into economic processes hinges. We study the economic factors affecting the distribution of knowledge across firms. Using novel survey data from Uganda, we present empirical evidence of circularity in a developing country context. In line with the resource-based view of the firm, the findings indicate that larger and more productive firms, and firms with proactive business strategies, are more likely to be informed about the circular economy. Exposure to environmental barriers, such as adverse climate change impacts or high energy intensity, is not related to the awareness of circularity. The findings suggest that policy makers should improve environmental regulations, inform entrepreneurs about opportunities in circular business models and facilitate the establishment of a waste sector to demonstrate a step towards implementation of circular economy principles.

How shall publicly provided excludable goods be financed - by general taxation or user fees? Prominent applications are in education, notably universities and early childcare. The general conclusion of the existing literature is that exclusive tax financing is neither efficient nor desirable under widely shared distributive goals. A striking example is childcare because here fees are often made dependent on parents' income. Given the rather clear arguments in favor of user fees for formal childcare, it is surprising to notice that some German states with leftist governments have abolished user fees and replaced them with pure tax financing. It is the purpose of this research to investigate the attitudes of politicians towards user fees for publicly funded childcare and to explore the justifications given for these attitudes. This was done within face-to-face online interviews with an embedded survey with members of eight federal state legislatures. The survey results confirm the experience of real political decisions in that left-leaning politicians tend to oppose parental fees. They do so mainly with the justification that "education must be free for all". Right-leaning politicians tend to support fees and consider an abolition as helping mainly the rich and a problem for the quality of childcare. We discuss how these results can be reconciled with the redistributive goals of leftist parties.

We perform a Meta-Regression Analysis (MRA) of the literature on government size and corruption, examining 450 empirical estimates retrieved from 44 primary papers published from 1998 to 2022. We find considerable heterogeneity in the results, mainly depending on whether the paper is published or not, accounts for endogeneity and uses panel or cross-sectional data. Moreover, the type of indicator used to measure corruption has a significant impact on the sign of the relationship with government size. Finally, adding variables defined at the country level as regressors, per capita GDP does not lead to significant results, whereas we find a positive relationship between the countries' corruption index and the effect size.

We repeatedly elicit beliefs about the returns to study effort, in a large university course. A behavioral model of quasi-hyperbolic discounting and malleable beliefs predicts that the dynamics of beliefs mirrors the importance of exerting self-control, such that believed returns increase as the exam approaches, and drop post-exam. Exploiting variation in exam timing to control for common information shocks, we find this prediction confirmed: average believed study returns increase by about 20% over the period before the exam, and drop by about the same afterwards. Additional analyses further support the hypothesized mechanism that beliefs serve as a means of self-control.
