    Im frühgriechischen Denken nimmt die Idee der Abhängigkeit menschlichen Lebens von ihn übersteigenden Mächten eine zentrale Stellung ein; der Mensch wird als weitgehend passiv verstanden. Anders Hesiod: Hinter seinen Erga steht das Bild eines aktiven, gestaltenden Menschen, der die Möglichkeit besitzt, sich für ein bestimmtes Handeln - gut wie schlecht - zu entscheiden. Die Entscheidung trifft sein nous (Verstand), der "das eigentliche Selbst des Menschen" (Arbogast Schmitt) darstellt. Soll Handeln erfolgreich sein, muss es sich innerhalb der auf klaren Regeln beruhenden dike-Ordnung (Recht, Gerechtigkeit) bewegen; so kann der Mensch seine Zukunft weitgehend selbst gestalten und seine Ziele (ökonomisch, sozial) verwirklichen. Weil er erkennen kann, was schlecht ist, existiert auch kein scheinbar irrational waltendes Schicksal: Er ist nicht mehr nur Verantwortlicher (wie im homerischen Epos), er ist schuldig (aitios) an dem durch ihn in Gang gesetzten Geschehen. Vorliegende Untersuchung geht nicht nur dieser neuartigen Sichtweise nach, sondern zeigt auch, dass dem nous die Schlüsselfunktion für die adäquate Rezeption der Erga zukommt, die als Vereinigung unterschiedlicher Gattungen Hesiods bereits in der Theogonie erhobenen Anspruch, neuartige Dichtung zu schaffen, einlöst

    This volume includes chapters by junior and senior scholars hailing from Europe, Asia, North America, and Oceania, all of whom sought to understand the social and cultural implications surrounding how people take responsibility for the ways they speak or write in relation to a place—whether it is one they have long resided in, recently moved to, or left a long time ago.;The contributors to the volume investigate ‘responsibility’ in and through language practices as inspired by the roots of the (English) word itself: the ability to respond, or mount a response to a situation at hand. It is thus a ‘responsive’ kind of responsibility, one that focuses not only on demonstrating responsibility for language, but highlighting the various ways we respond to situations discursively and metalinguistically. This sort of responsibility is both part of individual and collectively negotiated concerns that shift as people contend with processes related to globalization.

    Long description: Die seit 1947 andauernde systematische Vertreibung der Palästinenser*innen aus Palästina/Israel und die Shoa werden gemeinhin nicht als Teil desselben historischen Prozesses gedacht. Sarah El Bulbeisi trägt zu einer notwendigen Debatte über die europäische Mitverantwortung für die palästinensische Gewalterfahrung bei, indem sie die Lebenswelten von Palästinenser*innen erster und zweiter Generation in Deutschland und in der Schweiz von den 1960er Jahren bis 2015 beschreibt. Auf der Grundlage von Lebensgeschichten und teilnehmender Beobachtung folgt ihre Oral History den Spuren systematischer Gewalt in Selbstbildern und Eltern-Kind-Beziehungen. Aus postkolonialer Perspektive werden dabei auch die Identitätsdiskurse der Betroffenen untersucht Biographical note: Sarah El Bulbeisi ist wissenschaftliche Mitarbeiterin am Institut für den Nahen und Mittleren Osten der Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München (LMU) sowie Leiterin des vom Deutschen Auswärtigen Amt geförderten Hochschuldialog-Projekts »Gewalt, Flucht und Exil: Trauma in der arabischen Welt und in Deutschland« mit palästinensischen und libanesischen Universitäten sowie der LMU München

Doch handelt es sich hierbei meist um eine Rezitations- und weniger um eine Rezeptionspraxis. Dabei wären tiefergehende Debatten um und mit Theorien der Postkolonialität dringend notwendig, um etwa die Zumutungen der dominanten eurozentrischen Ausstellungs- und Vermittlungspraxen aufzudecken. Die Beiträge des Bandes evaluieren diesbezüglich die Verantwortung der Kunst aus einer explizit postkolonialen Perspektive, wobei der Fokus auf den »Double Binds« liegt, die das Feld durchziehen. Dabei werden sowohl diskriminierende Praxen im Feld entlarvt, als auch eine (auto-)kritische Theorieentwicklung vorangetrieben Biographical note: María do Mar Castro Varela ist Professorin für Allgemeine Pädagogik und Soziale Arbeit an der Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin. Nach ihren Diplom-Abschlüssen in Psychologie und Pädagogik promovierte sie im Fach Politik. Sie war u.a. Senior Fellow am Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen (IWM) in Wien. Sie ist Gründerin des bildungsLab* (bildungslab.net). Forschungs- und Interessenschwerpunkte: Postkoloniale Theorie, Kritische Bildungs- und Erziehungswissenschaften, Gender und Queer Studies sowie Trauma-Studien. Leila Haghighat ist Kulturschaffende in Berlin und promoviert zu partizipativer Kunst im Kontext von Gentrifizierungsprozessen an der Universität für Angewandte Kunst in Wien. Sie hat Kultur- und Politikwissenschaft an der Université Paris VIII studiert und war Koordinatorin für Kulturelle Bildung am Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Ihre Arbeits- und Forschungsschwerpunkte sind partizipative Praktiken und Wissensproduktion in Kunst und Kultureller Bildung sowie Fragen nach dem Verhältnis von Kunst, Politik und Gesellschaft

    Im frühgriechischen Denken nimmt die Idee der Abhängigkeit menschlichen Lebens von ihn übersteigenden Mächten eine zentrale Stellung ein; der Mensch wird als weitgehend passiv verstanden. Anders Hesiod: Hinter seinen Erga steht das Bild eines aktiven, gestaltenden Menschen, der die Möglichkeit besitzt, sich für ein bestimmtes Handeln - gut wie schlecht - zu entscheiden. Die Entscheidung trifft sein nous (Verstand), der "das eigentliche Selbst des Menschen" (Arbogast Schmitt) darstellt. Soll Handeln erfolgreich sein, muss es sich innerhalb der auf klaren Regeln beruhenden dike-Ordnung (Recht, Gerechtigkeit) bewegen; so kann der Mensch seine Zukunft weitgehend selbst gestalten und seine Ziele (ökonomisch, sozial) verwirklichen. Weil er erkennen kann, was schlecht ist, existiert auch kein scheinbar irrational waltendes Schicksal: Er ist nicht mehr nur Verantwortlicher (wie im homerischen Epos), er ist schuldig (aitios) an dem durch ihn in Gang gesetzten Geschehen. Vorliegende Untersuchung geht nicht nur dieser neuartigen Sichtweise nach, sondern zeigt auch, dass dem nous die Schlüsselfunktion für die adäquate Rezeption der Erga zukommt, die als Vereinigung unterschiedlicher Gattungen Hesiods bereits in der Theogonie erhobenen Anspruch, neuartige Dichtung zu schaffen, einlöst

    Long description: Postkoloniale Perspektiven im Kunstbetrieb und in der Kulturellen Bildung haben Hochkonjunktur, etwa in der Debatte um das Humboldt Forum Berlin. Doch handelt es sich hierbei meist um eine Rezitations- und weniger um eine Rezeptionspraxis. Dabei wären tiefergehende Debatten um und mit Theorien der Postkolonialität dringend notwendig, um etwa die Zumutungen der dominanten eurozentrischen Ausstellungs- und Vermittlungspraxen aufzudecken. Die Beiträge des Bandes evaluieren diesbezüglich die Verantwortung der Kunst aus einer explizit postkolonialen Perspektive, wobei der Fokus auf den »Double Binds« liegt, die das Feld durchziehen. Dabei werden sowohl diskriminierende Praxen im Feld entlarvt, als auch eine (auto-)kritische Theorieentwicklung vorangetrieben Biographical note: María do Mar Castro Varela ist Professorin für Allgemeine Pädagogik und Soziale Arbeit an der Alice Salomon Hochschule Berlin. Nach ihren Diplom-Abschlüssen in Psychologie und Pädagogik promovierte sie im Fach Politik. Sie war u.a. Senior Fellow am Institut für die Wissenschaften vom Menschen (IWM) in Wien. Sie ist Gründerin des bildungsLab* (bildungslab.net). Forschungs- und Interessenschwerpunkte: Postkoloniale Theorie, Kritische Bildungs- und Erziehungswissenschaften, Gender und Queer Studies sowie Trauma-Studien. Leila Haghighat ist Kulturschaffende in Berlin und promoviert zu partizipativer Kunst im Kontext von Gentrifizierungsprozessen an der Universität für Angewandte Kunst in Wien. Sie hat Kultur- und Politikwissenschaft an der Université Paris VIII studiert und war Koordinatorin für Kulturelle Bildung am Haus der Kulturen der Welt.     The aim of this paper is to contribute to an innovative agenda in the field of Environmental Economics. The paper focusses on a conceptual and political perspective on the interactions between nature and economy. Section 1 states that Environmental Economics has to consider three fields: nature, justice and the role of time. To operationalize this claim, we introduce fundamental concepts such as entropy, joint production, ignorance, evolution, absolute scarcity, responsibility and homo politicus and explain them in Section 2. These concepts are applied in Section 3 using a historical example, namely the soda-chlorine industry, extending over a period of about three centuries. The lessons taken from this economic, environmental and political evolution are outlined in Section 4. In Section 5, we apply the concept of responsibility to address political aspects dealt with when examining the interplay between nature and economy. In our outlook in Section 6, we argue that these concepts and further concepts do not form a hierarchically structured system. Instead they are conceived as a network of interdependent concepts that reference each other but also remain categorically distinct from one another.

Wenn Semantiken ihre Passgenauigkeit verlieren und den gesellschaftlichen Diskurs mit Kategorien versorgen, die den Blick auf die sozialstrukturell relevanten Probleme und Lösungsmöglichkeiten tendenziell verstellen, sind nicht nur Denk -, sondern auch Handlungsblockaden vorprogrammiert. Der Beitrag stellt unter der Bezeichnung "Ordonomik" ein Forschungsprogramm vor, das systematisch auf diese Problemstellung fokussiert. Er entwickelt den ordonomischen Ansatz als eine institutionalistisch ausgerichtete Rational-Choice-Analyse der Interdependenz von Sozialstruktur und Semantik. Damit adaptiert er einen zentralen Gedanken der Luhmannschen Soziologie für eine dem methodologischen Individualismus verpflichtete Gesellschaftstheorie. Die Fruchtbarkeit dieser ordonomischen Methode zeigt sich insbesondere in der Reflexion normativer Semantiken. Dies wird in der Anwendung auf Begriffe des öffentlichen Diskurses - Freiheit, Solidarität, Verantwortung, Gerechtigkeit, Nachhaltigkeit und Corporate Citizenship - eingehend illustriert. Hierauf aufbauend skizziert der Artikel Folgerungen für die universitäre Lehre und identifiziert Ansatzpunkte für interdisziplinäre Zusammenarbeit. On the London Underground, you can hear the words "mind the gap" as a warning of the sometimes significant gap between the train door and the station platform. If unnoticed, this gap poses a serious danger of tripping. The same is true for the potential gap between social structure and semantics. As social structures rapidly change, the adjustment of semantics often lags behind. Yet, if the semantic categories used in society are no longer compatible with its social structure, it will be difficult to effectively identify and address the relevant societal problems. Extending this Luhmannian argument, the article puts forward the research program of "ordonomics". The ordonomic approach as developed here makes use of an institutional rational-choice analysis in order to systematically explore the interdependence between social structure and semantics. This approach is particularly powerful when applied to the discussion of normative categories. By this logic, the paper uses the ordonomic framework to critically reflect common notions of normative categories such as justice, solidarity, responsibility, sustainability, and corporate citizenship. Based on this analysis, the article spells out implications for the way teaching is carried out in the social sciences; it argues for a new framework of interdisciplinary cooperation and identifies potentials for mutual learning.

Sein Ausgangspunkt ist der Andere: Ein anderer Mensch, der durch seine Ansprache die subjektive Weltordnung aus den Angeln hebt, der fordert und zur Verantwortung ruft. Ein Ruf, dem auf ethischer Grundlage entsprochen werden muss. Es bleibt ein vergeblicher, der auf dem Mittelmeer verhallt. Die Ethik von Emmanuel Lévinas ist heute so aktuell wie selten zuvor. Erweitert um die Theorien Jacques Derridas und Judith Butlers stellt Carla Schrievers Studie eine spannende Suche nach Anwendungsmöglichkeiten einer Ethik dar, die nicht Subjektivität, sondern Alterität ins Zentrum der Diskussion stellt. Digital ecosystems formed on the basis of digital platforms are significantly transforming modern reality. Today it is difficult to imagine life without LinkedIn, Facebook, or Amazon. The total income generated by them is estimated at trillions of dollars. Digital platforms are the main driving force of the digital economy. The impact and growth of digital platforms on social and economic processes today is difficult to overestimate. The pandemic has further deepened their influence on society, as almost all social communication and economic activity has moved to online format on digital platforms. The growth of the share of digital platforms in various segments of the economy was so rapid that regulators around the world were not ready for such large-scale transformations. All this has caused a number of crisis phenomena, when IT giants have grown into an independent branch of “power”, which has direct access to the personal and financial data of millions of citizens, and moreover, have the opportunity to directly influence them. This monograph is a unique publication in which, for the first time, a large-scale and sufficiently deep team of experts and scientists from various countries of the world studied in detail the multidimensional phenomenon of the “platform economy” and the measures taken by states to regulate these processes. The book will be interesting to a wide range of readers interested in the problems of the development of digital platforms and the developing branch of law and science – the law of digital platforms. Maxim I. Inozemtsev is Ph.D. in Law, Associate Professor of the Department of Private International and Civil Law, Head of Dissertation Council Department, MGIMO-University. Dr. Inozemtsev is also the Editor-in-Chief of the Digital Law Journal and a Member of the European Association of Science Editors. He has worked at MGIMO-University giving lectures on Corporate Law of Foreign Countries, Civil Law and International Private Law. Dr. Inozemtsev also worked as an Associate for Baker McKenzie. Elina L. Sidorenko is Dr. Sci. in Law, Professor, the Head of the Center for Digital Economy and Financial Innovation, Academic Supervisor of the Digital Lawyer Master’s Program and Professor at the Department of Criminal Law and Criminal Procedure at MGIMO-University.     People often act out of a desire to be responsible for good and not for bad events. Similarly, people frequently reward and punish other people if they perceive them to be responsible for the implementation of events that they like or dislike. When the implementation of an event depends on the interaction of multiple persons and, potentially, moves of nature, the determinants of such responsibility perceptions are not well understood. In this paper, I propose a notion of causal responsibility which attempts to objectively capture the causal importance of a person's action for the implementation of an event in such situations. A laboratory experiment shows that the notion successfully predicts people's responsibility perceptions. Furthermore, I incorporate the notion in a framework of responsibility preferences and study its implications for worker motivation and the design of voting rules. Finally, I show that the notion can explain experimentally elicited behavior and punishment and reward patterns in multi-agent situations that are not well-explained by existing social preference theories.

    Poverty-reducing policies ought to prioritize the "deserving" poor, that is, those who do all that can be reasonably expected from them in their circumstances, but fail to achieve a minimum standard of living. To inform such policies, one needs a theory of justice accommodating norms of individual responsibility. I propose and axiomatically characterize a family of poverty indices that address these issues. Formally, poverty is measured by the sum of specific indices of individual deprivation which (i) keep individuals accountable for their choices, (ii) compare individuals based on the set of attainments they are deprived of, and (iii) prioritize the most deprived individuals. I illustrate the results with Norwegian register data. Among single males, about a third of the income-poor ones are "undeserving," because (based on the estimates) they are unwilling to accept a job that brings them out of poverty.

    The word "scapegoat" is defined as "a person made to bear the blame for others," and similarly, "scapegoatism" refers to "the act or practice of assigning blame or failure to another, as to deflect attention or responsibility away from oneself" (Collins English Dictionary and Dictionary.com, respectively.) While these definitions do not mention economics specifically, in most cases the blame on the scapegoat is economic in nature. Scapegoatism also provides a convenient, though extremely inferior, substitute for valid analyses of economic problems. Scapegoatism, however, has a partner, dehumanization, which is the process of demonizing certain people as less than human and unworthy of humane treatment. Scapegoatism is not only accompanied by dehumanization, but it is often motivated by it. Thus, "scapegoatism" is a euphemism and it is understudied as a result, because there is no single term of art that combines scapegoatism and dehumanization. This paper offers a solution to this semantic dilemma by proposing the new term, "HATEGOATISM," for the simultaneous existence of scapegoatism and dehumanization. Only one subfield of economics regularly embraces hategoatism, which is Libertarianism (where the "HATEGOAT" is government workers). Economists must lead by example by combating hategoatism, and that requires cleaning their own house first.

    Postkoloniale Perspektiven im Kunstbetrieb und in der Kulturellen Bildung haben Hochkonjunktur, etwa in der Debatte um das Humboldt Forum Berlin. Doch handelt es sich hierbei meist um eine Rezitations- und weniger um eine Rezeptionspraxis. Dabei wären tiefergehende Debatten um und mit Theorien der Postkolonialität dringend notwendig, um etwa die Zumutungen der dominanten eurozentrischen Ausstellungs- und Vermittlungspraxen aufzudecken. Die Beiträge des Bandes evaluieren diesbezüglich die Verantwortung der Kunst aus einer explizit postkolonialen Perspektive, wobei der Fokus auf den »Double Binds« liegt, die das Feld durchziehen. Dabei werden sowohl diskriminierende Praxen im Feld entlarvt, als auch eine (auto-)kritische Theorieentwicklung vorangetrieben.

    Der nachhaltige Umgang mit natürlichen Ressourcen ist eine der wichtigsten Aufgaben der Menschheit. Die interdisziplinäre Online-Plattform MINE-Mapping the Interplay between Nature and Economy (www.nature-economy.de) will zu einem erfolgreichen Umgang mit dieser Herausforderungbeitragen. MINE versteht sich als Brücke zwischen den Sozial-und Wirtschaftswissenschaften und den Naturwissenschaften. Wichtige Bausteine dieser Brücke sind Überlegungen aus den Bereichen der politischen Philosophie und der Ethik. Für sozial-ökologischeTransformationsprozesse bietet MINE Grundlagen, die theoretisch umfassend und zugleich praktisch für Politik und Wirtschaft sind.Unsere Überlegungen zeigen, wie die Ideen von MINE entstanden sind, was die Besonderheit des Ansatzes ausmacht und was er zu leisten vermag. Auf diese Weise sollen sowohl interessierte Personen aus der Wissenschaft als auch ökologisch engagierte Bürger zu einer fruchtbaren Arbeit mit der Online-Plattform geführt werden. Nach der Einführung in Teil I werden in Teil II aus der Perspektive von Malte Faber, der in der Ich-Form spricht, Motive und Erfahrungen erzählt, die ihn dazu bewogen haben, ab1980 einen interdisziplinären Forschungsverbund aufzubauen, dessen Methoden und Erkenntnisse wegweisend für MINE wurden. Teil III beschäftigt sich mit der Bedeutung der Philosophie für MINE und geht auf einige Leitideen und Grundbausteine des Ansatzes von MINE aus philosophischer Sicht ein. In Teil IV werden fünf Konzepte von MINE - drei Aspekten der Zeit, Unwissen, Kuppelproduktion, politische Verantwortung, Urteilskraft - vorgestellt, um den Ansatz von MINE an einem konkreten Transformationsproblem, nämlich der Entwicklung des Flusses Emscher, zu illustrieren. Diese war um 1900 der zentrale Abwasserkanal des Ruhrgebiets und wurde nach mehreren Jahrzehnten im Jahr 2020 vollständig renaturiert. In Teil V veranschaulicht Malte Faber, wiederum in der Ich-Perspektive, die Ausrichtung von MINE durch drei Botschaften zur Transformation. In einem Addendum, Teil VI, kommentieren wir kritisch die Fünf-vor-Zwölf-Rhetorik, die vor allem in Diskursen des Klimaschutzes verbreitet ist. The sustainable management of natural resources is one of the most important tasks humanityfaces. The interdisciplinary online platform MINE-Mapping the Interplay between Nature and Economy (www.nature-economy.de) aims to contribute to this. MINE can be understoodas a bridge between socialsciences, economicsand the natural sciences. Important building blocks of this bridge are considerations from the fields of political philosophy and ethics. For socio-ecological transformation processes, MINE offers foundations that are theoretically comprehensive and at the same time practical for politics and economics.Our considerations show how the ideas of MINE came into being, what constitutes the peculiarity of its approach and what it is capable of achieving. In this way, interested persons from the scientific community as well as ecologically engaged citizens should be led towards a fruitful work with the online platform. After the introduction in Part I, in Part II, from the perspective of Malte Faber, who speaks in first-person, motives and experiences are recounted that have led him to found an interdisciplinary research cooperation since 1980. Themethods and insight generated in this cooperation became groundbreaking for MINE. Part III deals with the importance of philosophical reasoningfor MINE and addresses some guiding ideas and basic building blocks of MINE's approach from a philosophical perspective. In Part IV, five concepts of MINE -three aspects of time, ignorance, joint production, political responsibility and, power of judgment -are introduced to illustrate the MINE-approach by a concrete transformation problem, namely the river Emscher; which was the central sewer of the Ruhr area around 1900 and was completely renaturalized after several decades in 2020. In Part V, Malte Faber illustrates, again in the first-person perspective, the orientation of MINE through three messages on transformation. In an addendum, Part VI, we critically comment on the five-before-twelve rhetoric that is widespread especially in discourses of climate protection.

    Meritocracies aspire to reward effort and hard work but promise not to judge individuals by the circumstances they were born into. The choice to work hard is, however, often shaped by circumstances. This study investigates whether people's merit judgments are sensitive to this endogeneity of choice. In a series of incentivized experiments with a large, representative US sample, study participants judge how much money two workers deserve for the effort they exerted. In the treatment condition, unequal circumstances strongly discourage one of the workers from working hard. Nonetheless, I find that individuals hold the disadvantaged worker fully responsible for his choice. They do so, even though they understand that choices are strongly influenced by circumstances. Additional experiments identify the cause of this neglect. In light of an uncertain counterfactual state - what would have happened on a level playing field - participants base their merit judgments on the only reliable evidence they possess: observed effort levels. I confirm these patterns in a structural model of merit views and a vignette study with real-world scenarios.

    Postcolonial perspectives in the art world and in cultural education are booming, for example in the debate about the Humboldt Forum Berlin. However, a lot of times these perspectives are rather practices of recitation than practices of reception. In this context, deeper debates around and with theories of postcolonialism would be urgently needed, for example, to expose the impositions of dominant Eurocentric exhibition and mediation practices. In this regard, the contributions to this volume evaluate the responsibilities of art from an explicitly postcolonial perspective, focusing on the "double binds" that pervade the discipline. In doing so, they both expose discriminatory practices in the field and promote an (auto)critical theory development Postkoloniale Perspektiven im Kunstbetrieb und der Kulturellen Bildung haben Hochkonjunktur, etwa in der Debatte um das Humboldt Forum Berlin. Doch handelt es sich hierbei meist um eine Rezitations- und weniger um eine Rezeptionspraxis. Dabei wären tiefergehende Debatten um und mit Theorien der Postkolonialität dringend notwendig, um etwa die Zumutungen der dominanten eurozentrischen Ausstellungs- und Vermittlungspraxen aufzudecken. Die Beiträge des Bandes evaluieren diesbezüglich die Verantwortung der Kunst aus einer explizit postkolonialen Perspektive, wobei der Fokus auf den »Double Binds« liegt, die das Feld durchziehen. Dabei werden sowohl diskriminierende Praxen im Feld entlarvt, als auch eine (auto-)kritische Theorieentwicklung vorangetrieben

    Illicit gold flows constitute a major development challenge for governments and a social responsibility challenge for the jewellery industry, which accounts for the majority of global gold demand. This paper highlights aspects of gold supply chains that lack transparency and may indicate junctures where illicit activities are taking place, resulting in a loss of tax and customs revenues. Using Peru and Kenya as case study countries, we draw from United Nations Comtrade data and qualitative data from field research to examine the magnitude of the gold trade, the forms in which gold is traded, and key trade partners for each country. We suggest that midstream portions of gold supply chains should be given more attention, certain types of gold exports and imports present greater traceability challenges than others, and some countries play a much more significant role in the global jewellery trade. We propose areas where further investigations may be warranted to ensure more transparent and responsible gold supply chains.

    Meritocracies aspire to reward hard work and promise not to judge individuals by the circumstances into which they were born. However, circumstances often shape the choice to work hard. I show that people's merit judgments are "shallow" and insensitive to this effect. They hold others responsible for their choices, even if these choices have been shaped by unequal circumstances. In an experiment, US participants judge how much money workers deserve for the effort they exert. Unequal circumstances disadvantage some workers and discourage them from working hard. Nonetheless, participants reward the effort of disadvantaged and advantaged workers identically, regardless of the circumstances under which choices are made. For some participants, this reflects their fundamental view regarding fair rewards. For others, the neglect results from the uncertain counterfactual. They understand that circumstances shape choices but do not correct for this because the counterfactual-what would have happened under equal circumstances-remains uncertain.
