    Jean-François Champollion est l’une des figures les plus brillantes de l’histoire des sciences européennes. Son déchiffrement des hiéroglyphes égyptiens, en 1822, représente à lui seul le triomphe de la philologie du XIXe siècle. Cependant, le récit maintes fois raconté du « coup de génie » masque sciemment les conditions épistémologiques et les luttes idéologiques dans lesquelles ce dernier, à l’époque de la Restauration, a pu être réalisé. La nouvelle façon de comprendre l’Antiquité égyptienne incarnée par Champollion relève de l’aspiration de la modernité européenne à appréhender le monde et l’humanité comme une grande Histoire du Progrès et à l’inscrire matériellement dans les grandes capitales européennes. Or, ce nouveau savoir a un revers paradoxal, celui de produire, à travers le pillage massif des monuments pharaoniques auquel il contribue, une réalité contraire au plaidoyer émancipateur qu’il promeut. Au moment où l’universalisme impérialiste de l’Europe prend son envol, il dévoile, dans le même mouvement, sa dimension funeste. Champollion en prend clairement conscience sur les bords du Nil et s’ouvre à une autre forme d’universalité, qui ne peut plus faire abstraction des réalités concrètes et qui reconnaît une responsabilité vraiment mondiale dans la préservation des sites archéologiques comme héritage de l’humanité. De ce regard très moderne sur la culture témoigne la lettre remarquable écrite par Champollion en 1829 au vice-roi d’Égypte, dans laquelle il recommande la mise en oeuvre de fouilles réglementées – texte reproduit à la fin de cet ouvrage, et qui n’a guère perdu de son actualité.

    Au commencement était la source… Puis vinrent les difficultés. Chaque source pose en effet des problèmes spécifiques. Le présent recueil, issu de deux journées d’étude organisées à l’Institut catholique d’études supérieures (La Roche-sur-Yon), s’efforce d’en brosser un panorama, à partir de cas relevant de disciplines, de périodes et de corpus suffisamment variés pour présenter au chercheur en sciences humaines une vue générale des questions que suscitent ses propres pratiques en lien avec de telles sources. À la lumière de ces études, des questions récurrentes déterminent la recherche documentaire : ce que sont les sources, par quel examen critique les évaluer, comment les organiser, enfin comment élaborer un récit scientifique fidèle, autant que possible, à leurs enseignements. La source est-elle intègre, authentique, sincère, représentative ? Son témoignage, parfois polémique, est lacunaire aussi, parce que séparé de la culture dans laquelle il s’intégrait et que cherche à reconstituer le chercheur, à la manière d’un puzzle dont il ne subsisterait que quelques pièces. La critique des sources navigue entre une lecture littérale et une lecture hypercritique. Cette dernière risque de disqualifier par principe tout récit historien fondé sur des sources qui ne seraient jugées ni sûres, ni vérifiables, ni exploitables, comme les récits légendaires de la fondation de Rome. L’esprit critique, pourtant nécessaire à la déontologie scientifique, peut paralyser le discours savant quand il est systématisé. Mais comment apprécier un degré approprié de critique et un degré excessif ? La question des sources en vient donc à en ouvrir une autre, une interrogation de nature épistémologique et philosophique : comment fonder le savoir ?...

    En écrivant Les Belles Infidèles il y a plus de soixante ans, Georges Mounin a voulu proposer, selon ses propres termes, « une défense et illustration de l’art de traduire ». II a su réaliser son projet avec une rigueur de démonstration peu commune, une documentation historique exemplaire et, par-dessus tout, une vision magistrale de la traduction. Non seulement cette vision envisage tous les aspects fondamentaux de la traduction, mais elle réussit à faire converger différents points de vue vers la solution des problèmes: celui du philologue, de l’historien et du linguiste, comme celui des traducteurs eux-memes et celui des théoriciens de la traduction. « Il ne s’agit pas de démontrer que la traduction soit facile, ni toujours à tout coup possible et parfaite du premier coup. Ce serait déjà beau d’avoir combattu cette maladie qui paralyse les traducteurs eux-mémes avant d’avoir commnencé leur tâche : la conviction séculaire qu’ils entreprennent une tâche théoriquement impossible », écrivait l’auteur. Cet ouvrage constitue une réédition d’un grand classique de la traductologie.

L'assyriologue travaille à partir de tablettes d'argile inscrites en caractères cunéiformes. Il doit reconstituer les textes à partir de fragments, les mettre en ordre chronologique et géographique pour élaborer peu à peu une histoire non seulement politique, mais aussi sociale, économique et culturelle de la Mésopotamie. La tâche est immense et implique une approche pluridisciplinaire combinant archéologie, épigraphie, philologie et histoire.

    Figure critique majeure des études de philologie classique en Italie, Diego Lanza a renouvelé en profondeur l'approche des œuvres de la littérature grecque ancienne. Ses travaux conjuguent un intérêt, partiellement hérité de la philologie historique, pour l'histoire de la tradition, avec une analyse, inspirée notamment de Marx et de Gramsci, de la fonction des textes anciens comme instruments de médiation idéologique, interrogeant ainsi conjointement le passé et le présent des appropriations culturelles. Les problématiques de l'anthropologie occupent une place privilégiée dans sa lecture de l'Antiquité, mais leur espace de référence n'est pas celui de l'anthropologie structurale, de la psychologie historique ou de la critique symbolique de l'école française. C'est plutôt l'étude du folklore, où l'analyse de la culture populaire est orientée par un intérêt spécifique pour les antagonismes qui la structurent. Les essais réunis dans ce volume reviennent sur les objets auxquels Diego Lanza s'est intéressé - poésie archaïque (Homère), théâtre classique (Euripide, Aristophane), philosophie « présocratique » et classique (Anaxagore, Aristote), histoire de la philologie - et dans la diversité de leurs points de vue, esquissent un bilan des aspects les plus significatifs d'une œuvre scientifique originale et stimulante.

    Jean-François Champollion est l'une des figures les plus brillantes de l'histoire des sciences européennes. Son déchiffrement des hiéroglyphes égyptiens, en 1822, représente à lui seul le triomphe de la philologie du XIXe siècle. Cependant, le récit maintes fois raconté du « coup de génie » masque sciemment les conditions épistémologiques et les luttes idéologiques dans lesquelles ce dernier, à l'époque de la Restauration, a pu être réalisé. La nouvelle façon de comprendre l'Antiquité égyptienne incarnée par Champollion relève de l'aspiration de la modernité européenne à appréhender le monde et l'humanité comme une grande Histoire du Progrès et à l'inscrire matériellement dans les grandes capitales européennes. Or, ce nouveau savoir a un revers paradoxal, celui de produire, à travers le pillage massif des monuments pharaoniques auquel il contribue, une réalité contraire au plaidoyer émancipateur qu'il promeut. Au moment où l'universalisme impérialiste de l'Europe prend son envol, il dévoile, dans le même mouvement, sa dimension funeste. Champollion en prend clairement conscience sur les bords du Nil et s'ouvre à une autre forme d'universalité, qui ne peut plus faire abstraction des réalités concrètes et qui reconnaît une responsabilité vraiment mondiale dans la préservation des sites archéologiques comme héritage de l'humanité. De ce regard très moderne sur la culture témoigne la lettre remarquable écrite par Champollion en 1829 au vice-roi d'Égypte, dans laquelle il recommande la mise en oeuvre de fouilles réglementées - texte reproduit à la fin de cet ouvrage, et qui n'a guère perdu de son actualité.
