    This article responds to recent calls for rethinking management education and fostering a spatial understanding of educational practices. We propose to introduce Foucault’s notion of heterotopic space and the spatial thought of Lefebvre into the debate about the current and future state of business schools. In particular, we conceptually and empirically discuss the potential for understanding space in a way that addresses its productive force, its multiplicity and its inherent contradictions. Using the example of an experimental teaching project dedicated to the conception and physical design of a city of the future, we reflect upon the possibility of the emergence of ‘other’, heterotopic spaces within an institution of management learning. Our findings suggest that spatial interventions facilitate critically affirmative engagement with the business school by offering an imaginative approach to management education.

    The aim of our article is to reflect upon intervention as a threshold where art and action research meet. For this, we will relate calls to apply the capacity of the performing arts to the social sciences to examples of neo-avant-garde art practices which show a renewed interest in (intervening into) the everyday production of public space. We recount and analyze two vignettes of artistic interventions to illustrate the politico-aesthetic power of art to interfere with how the social is assembled and to provoke new constellations of what is visible and sayable. Such experimental forms of engaging with the public raise the issue of a minoritarian politics of participation. Rather than being just another tool in the researcher’s toolkit, taking into account these practices can illustrate and inform certain dimensions of what could be called performative action research.

    Der Versuch, die Dinge der Welt in Ordnung zu bringen, ist gleichermaßen selbstverständlich wie schwierig. Betroffen davon sind sämtliche Phänomenbereiche, technische Gegenstände ebenso wie vermeintlich natürliche Dinge. Der Status des jeweiligen Ordnungssystems selbst bleibt dabei in sich widersprüchlich, denn das Bemühen um eine natürliche Ordnung wird mit der Einsicht in deren Willkürlichkeit konfrontiert. Die Störfälle der Natur und der Technik, der Diskurse und der Medien, der Klassifikationen und Ordnungssysteme erweisen sich dabei immer als äußerst komplexe Wissensfiguren. Zuordnen kann man ihnen mindestens drei Aspekte: Erstens irritieren und unterminieren sie gegebene Ordnungsformen; zweitens konstituieren, organisieren und stabilisieren sie allererst Wissensordnungen; drittens manifestieren sich gerade mit ihnen diskursive und soziale Ein- und Ausschlussmechanismen. Da Ordnungssysteme demnach alles andere als statische Gebilde sind, sowohl was neue Gegenstände als auch was Kriterien der Ordnungsbildung betrifft, ergibt sich zwangsläufig, dass die Beschäftigung mit ihnen aus der Perspektive verschiedener Wissenschaften zu erfolgen hat.

    The paper suggests to analyze the history of scientific computer simulations with respect to the history of media. After presenting some ideas concerning the peculiarities of computer simulation, two examples (management simulations of the 1960s; traffic-related and epistemological simulations of the 1990s) are interpreted. From them, further questions concerning the status of scientific knowledge, the genesis of epistemological concepts and their critique are derived. Der Aufsatz plädiert dafür, die Geschichte der wissenschaftlichen Computersimulation auf eine spezifisch medienhistorische Weise zu untersuchen. Nach einigen Vorschlägen zur Charakterisierung der Besonderheiten von Computersimulationen werden zwei Beispiele interpretiert (Management-Simulationen der 1960er und verkehrstechnische bzw. epidemiologische Simulationen der 1990er). Daraus leiten sich Fragen nach dem veränderten Status wissenschaftlichen Wissens, nach der Genese wissenschaftstheoretischer Konzepte und nach wissenschaftskritischen Optionen ab.

    The article describes the development of an educational game at the University of Salford to facilitate learning and discussion about on a Heritage Site in Manchester: Ordsall Hall. The building has been used as a basis for a series of games about gastronomy, religion, fashion and politics of the respective times with the aim of delivering information in a playful manner. The project investigates of how a popular games engine (UT2004) can be used to create Digital Heritage representations and how features that are popular and well known amongst dedicated gamers can be ported or modified to suit an interactive environment that corresponds to scientific standards. Three games have been developed that differ in regard to "ludicity", seriousness, depth of content implemented, and ease of use. This led to terminological considerations in regard to the notion of "Serious Games" and to a critical analysis of the terminologies used and strategic branding of games as "historic", "big fun", puzzle, "serious", "First Person Shooter" or "Creative".
