    The studies in this collection seek to examine the notions of ‘linguistic diversity’ and ‘hybridity’ through the lenses of new critical theories and theoretical frameworks embedded within the broader discussion of the sociolinguistics of globalization. The chapters include critical inquiries into online/offline languages in society, language users, language learners and language teachers who may operate ‘between’ languages and are faced with decisions to navigate, negotiate and invent or re-invent languages, local and global and virtual spaces. The research took place in contexts that include linguistic landscapes, schools, classrooms, neighborhoods and virtual spaces of Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, Japan, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, South Korea and the USA.

    This paper investigates the causal effects of agglomeration on hours worked by the self-employed. The IV estimations instrument for urbanization and localization using the minimum distance from the work Public Use Microdata Area centroid to the United States' coastlines and estimated industry share in 1930. The 2SLS results demonstrate that urbanization and localization decrease and increase hours worked of the self-employed, respectively. These results are mainly from outsourcing and competition, whereas sorting, simultaneity, and agglomeration wage effect are less likely to be influential. Additionally, only small business owners perceive the pressures of competition in localization economies. The young unincorporated self-employed are more likely to be affected by peer competitors, whereas the elder unincorporated perceive more pressures from large firms.

    We examine the effects of urbanization and localization on four distinct types of innovation in manufacturing and services. Furthermore, estimating multilevel panel regression models, we investigate the sorting of highly innovative firms into dense urban regions by considering both observable and unobservable firm characteristics. The results indicate that spatial sorting is important. A large portion of the regional differences in firm innovation rates is due to firm characteristics. Estimates that ignore unobserved heterogeneity at the firm level still point to a positive and significant impact of localization on different types of innovation. However, once we include firm fixed effects and distinguish between manufacturing and services, only some weak indication for positive effects of localization on radical innovations of manufacturing firms remains. In addition, the rate to adopt an existing product by an manufacturing firm is positively related to the regional employment density. For the service sector, in contrast, we find adverse effects of localization on different kinds of innovation and no important effect of urbanization.

    How does export liberalization affect firm location choice and the spatial concentration of economic activity? We address these questions using the geo-coordinates of Chinese manufacturing firms and find that export widens inter-city and intra-city spatial disparities by reinforcing initially large industry centers. We first show that there has been an increased spatial concentration across cities in response to improved foreign market access. Only industry city pairs that were large initially increase their employment density following trade liberalization. Second, there has also been an increased spatial concentration within cities. For a given industry, districts closer to city centers are getting denser, mainly driven by the extensive margin. Third, the above effects are not exclusive to industries directly exposed to export shocks but also spill over positively to upstream and downstream industries and negatively to industries competing for the same workers locally.

    Development assistance funding by international donors is rarely channelled to/through local actors. While there are strong normative and practical arguments for localizing funding, progress has been piecemeal as donors are largely left to their own devices to decide how, when, where, and how much to localize. This paper explores the antecedents to donor aid allocation and poses the question: 'How and why do donors vary in their extent of localization (as defined by the use of local channels to disburse aid funding)?'. Using the case of aid-dependent Sierra Leone and applying a mixed-methods design combining primary interviews with analysis of the Development Assistance Database, I find that projects funded by multilateral donors are more likely to be localized than those of bilateral donors, who prioritize funnelling aid through actors from their home countries. I also find that the nature of aid assistance (i.e. whether funding is provided through loans or grants) significantly determines the extent to which local channels are used. Lastly, I show that these trends manifest at the sectoral level,where sectors dominated by bilateral donors often use parallel implementation structures, while sectors dominated by multilateral donors see greater usage of local channels and capacities. Additionally, while projects by multilateral donors may appear more localized, I find no evidence that such projects are more impactful or participatory than projects funded by other donor types.

    (In,Ga)N/GaN-Leuchtdioden wurden vor mehr als 10 Jahren kommerzialisiert, dennoch ist das Verständnis über den Einfluss von Lokalisierung auf die Rekombinationsdynamik in den (In,Ga)N/GaN Quantengräben (QG) unvollständig. In dieser Arbeit nutzen wir die temperaturabhängige stationäre und zeitaufgelöste Spektroskopie der Photolumineszenz (PL), um diesen Einfluss in einer typischen Ga-polaren, planaren (In,Ga)N/GaN-QG-Struktur zu untersuchen. Zusätzlich dehnen wir unsere Studie auf N-polare, axiale (In,Ga)N/GaN Quantumscheiben, nichtpolare Kern/Mantel GaN/(In,Ga)N µ-Drähte und Ga-polare, submonolage InN/GaN Übergitter aus. Während wir einen einfach exponentiellen Abfall der PL-Intensität in den nichtpolaren QG beobachten (Hinweise auf die Rekombination von Exzitonen), folgen die PL-Transienten in polaren QG asymptotisch einem Potenzgesetz. Dieses Potenzgesetz weist auf eine Rekombination zwischen individuell lokalisierten, räumlich getrennten Elektronen und Löchern hin. Für einen solchen Zerfall kann keine eindeutige PL-Lebensdauer definiert werden, was die Schätzung der internen Quanteneffizienz und die Bestimmung einer Diffusionslänge erschwert. Um nützliche Rekombinationsparameter und Diffusivitäten für die polaren QG zu extrahieren, analysieren wir die PL-Transienten mit positionsabhängigen Diffusionsreaktionsgleichungen, die durch einen Monte-Carlo-Algorithmus effizient gelöst werden. Aus diesen Simulationen ergibt sich, dass das asymptotische Potenzgesetz auch bei effizienter nichtstrahlender Rekombination (z. B. in den Nanodrähten) erhalten bleibt. Zudem stellen wir fest, dass sich die InN/GaN Übergitter elektronisch wie konventionelle (In,Ga)N/GaN QG verhalten, aber mit starkem, thermisch aktiviertem nichtstrahlenden Kanal. Des Weiteren zeigen wir, dass das Verhältnis von Lokalisierungs- und Exzitonenbindungsenergie bestimmt, dass die Rekombination entweder durch das Tunneln von Elektronen und Löchern oder durch den Zerfall von Exzitonen dominiert wird. ; (In,Ga)N/GaN light-emitting diodes have been ...

    The paper deals with the discussion on the possible models of economy - market economy, which is usually associated with capitalism, and planned economy, which is usually associated with socialism. The experience of the 20th century has shown that efforts to choose the model of socialism have failed. Is it sufficient to make a conclusion, that capitalism is preferred to socialism not depending on conditions? Even if so, that the events of the 21st century show, that model of capitalism also has faced serious contra versions, and thus should be significantly modified. The great economists from Smith to Keynes have made forecasts about the new model of economy in the future - neither socialism, nor capitalism in a common sense. To solve the global problems, we need to think outside the box, revising critically the conventional wisdoms, thus creating a new model of economy. A possible way in that direction may be the localization of economy in a global scale.

    Applying the methodology developed by Duranton and Overman (2005, 2008), we analyze localization and dispersion of firms in China. Using a unique and detailed dataset on manufacturing firms in China, we are able to follow the changes in location patterns of firms between 2002 and 2008. Our analysis shows that firms in China are more localized than in the UK or Japan. Localization is comparable to that in the US, and takes place at relative small scales that are consistent with the size of Chinese cities. Localization increases rapidly, even in the relative short period between 2002 and 2008, especially new entrants localize. Private firms, firms from Hong-Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and foreign firms are more localized than state-owned firms. Our findings are consistent with the notion that China is increasingly liberalizing its economy, enabling (profit seeking) manufacturing firms to benefit from agglomeration economies.

    The formation of new firms is an important determinant of economic development and the industrial organization literature highlights agglomeration as one of the main factors affecting the formation and scale of operations of new firms. This paper is one of the first to use developing country data to estimate the impact of localization (the benefits accruing to firms that choose to locate in a specific region within a specific industry) and urbanization (the benefits accruing to firms located close to each other regardless of the type of industry to which they belong) on new firms' formation and scale of operations. Our findings reveal that agglomeration measured through density of employment has a significant impact on the formation of new firms and on their scale of operations in Punjab.

    The literature on organizational learning asserts that external learning is often limited geographically and technologically. We scrutinize to what extent organizations acquire external knowledge by accessing external knowledge repositories. We argue that professional service firms (PSFs) grant access to non-localized knowledge repositories and thereby not only facilitate external learning but also help to overcome localization. Focusing on patent law firms, we test our predictions using a unique dataset of 544,820 pairs of EP patent applications. Analyzing patterns of knowledge flows captured in patent citations we find that accessing a PSF's repository facilitates the acquisition of external knowledge. As the effect is more pronounced for knowledge that is distant to a focal organization we conclude that having access to a knowledge repository compensates for localization disadvantages.
