Frontmatter -- Contents -- Introduction: Being Beside -- 1. Reconstructing Secularisms -- 2. Archival Enthusiasm -- 3. The Ghost Dance and Realism’s Techno- Spiritual Frontier -- 4. Touching a Button -- 5. Born, Again -- Coda: Behind, Before, Beside -- Acknowledgments -- Notes -- Bibliography -- Index -- About the Author Explores the intersection and history of American literary realism and the performance of spiritual and racial embodiment. Recovering a series of ecstatic performances in late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century American realism, Realist Ecstasy travels from camp meetings to Native American ghost dances to storefront church revivals to explore realism’s relationship to spiritual experience. In her approach to realism as both an unruly archive of performance and a wide-ranging repertoire of media practices—including literature, photography, audio recording, and early film—Lindsay V. Reckson argues that the real was repetitively enacted and reenacted through bodily practice. Realist Ecstasy demonstrates how the realist imagining of possessed bodies helped construct and naturalize racial difference, while excavating the complex, shifting, and dynamic possibilities embedded in ecstatic performance: its production of new and immanent forms of being beside. Across her readings of Stephen Crane, James Weldon Johnson, and Nella Larsen, among others, Reckson triangulates secularism, realism, and racial formation in the post-Reconstruction moment. Realist Ecstasy shows how post-Reconstruction realist texts mobilized gestures—especially the gestures associated with religious ecstasy—to racialize secularism itself. Reckson offers us a distinctly new vision of American realism as a performative practice, a sustained account of how performance lives in and through literary archives, and a rich sense of how closely secularization and racialization were linked in Jim Crow America

In order to achieve the commonly agreed emission reduction target, the European Commission developed binding national targets for each member state until 2030 and called upon the member states to submit National Energy and Climate Plans to ensure increased transparency for the respective national targets and strategies. An analysis of these plans shows that some of the emission reductions set at the national level prescribe a more ambitious decarbonisation than the EU-wide limits. However, since a transformation to a climate-friendly system requires considerable investment, the question arises as to why some states apparently want to be in the vanguard. We find that countries may have an incentive to outperform other states in the development of a low-carbon electricity system in order to pass on part of the transformation costs to neighbouring countries.

This study aims to examine the impact of infrastructure on firm performance in nine CAREC countries: Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Pakistan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan. Empirical analysis is based on the enterprise survey for 2009, 2013, and 2019. Infrastructure is measured by the duration of power outages, electricity expenses as the share of total sales, access to broadband internet and efficiency of customs. Firm performance was measured by total sales, share of utilized capacity, dummy variable if firm exports, and the share of export sales. Results indicate that firm performance measured through sales and capacity utilization is negatively affected by the duration of power outages and electricity expenses. Moreover, access to broadband internet significantly increases the total sales and export sales of small firms, while efficiency of customs increases the exporting activities of medium and large firms. These findings underline that for the development of private sector and international trade in CAREC countries, sustainable access to, and quality of, electricity, telecommunications, and customs efficiency are important objectives for government policy.

The Province of Ontario has had a very aggressive program of introducing wind electricity generation technologies into its generation supply mix. This program, combined with the rigid baseload production by nuclear and hydro plants, has created a surplus baseload electricity supply for 20 years. Pumped hydro storage (PHS) has been suggested as an economically viable technology for storing energy produced by non-dispatchable wind energy sources. In this vein, an analytical framework has been developed to explore the feasibility of the PHS facility to manage the surplus supply of electricity and compare its cost performance with the alternative gas power plants. The analysis is undertaken for a situation where the PHS plant uses surplus energy for the first 20 years of its operation, and additional wind energy would be provided for the second 20 years of the project's life. It is found that given the level of capital costs of building PHS in Ontario, the PHS expansion is not economically cost-effective to utilize the projected off-peak surpluses. The economic analysis also illustrates that in the context of Ontario, the integration of PHS with wind power generation will have a negative impact on the Canadian economy in all circumstances. This loss is borne mainly by the electricity consumers of Ontario. Even considering the cost of GHG emissions from a world perspective, this investment is not worthwhile. It would be better socially from the perspective of the world if the surplus baseload electricity from Ontario would be given away to the US free of charge. It could then be used to reduce generation by natural gas plants in the USA, hence reducing GHG emissions globally, without any incremental cost to Canada.

This paper takes on a novel perspective to the overloading of distribution substations by considering the common-pool characteristics of electric infrastructure capacity. Using firmand substation-level data from a sample of Nepalese firms, the results provide evidence of common-pool resource (CPR) problems across substations' ownership boundaries: firms with captive substations experience fewer and shorter unplanned outages than firms connected to shared substations. Based on these findings, private investments in captive substations emerge as a coping mechanism against unreliable electricity supply. Lastly, an appraisal framework for such investments is developed and used to quantify the economic benefits to Nepal's economy.
