Die Geschichte des Deutschunterrichts in China lässt sich etwa 150 Jahre zurückverfolgen. Ein Aufschwung des Deutschunterrichts im schulischen Bereich ist allerdings erst seit Anfang des 21. Jahrhunderts zu beobachten. Mittlerweile ist Deutsch die am meisten gelernte europäische Fremdsprache an chinesischen Schulen nach Englisch. However, an increase in the teaching of German in middle schools has just been observed since the beginning of the 21st century. Meanwhile, German is the most widely learned European foreign language in Chinese schools after English. This paper focuses on the teaching of German as a foreign language in middle schools and aims to offer a comprehensive evaluation of status quo and to explore the reasons for the significant upswing of German language learning in the context of political, economic and social changes as well as motivation at individual level. Firstly, a review of the teaching of the German language in the past centuries is given in order to illustrate the long-term development trajectory. Furthermore, an assessment of status quo is outlined and the conditions of the political, economic as well as social-cultural framework for the dissemination of the German language are analyzed. In order to examine the motivation of individuals and institutions involved, extensive empirical research was carried out with students learning German, their parents, German teachers and school administrators. After presenting the motivation at individual level, the learning motivation of today's students is briefly compared with those of the past in order to find out how it has evolved over the past centuries.$yLinzenz
